Late fifties makeup or no makeup

goldeneye77 · 30/05/2024 10:24

Prefer not to wear makeup anymore.
Don't think it makes me look better.
Was thinking of getting rid of it all and just continuing with moisturised skin, concealer if spots, spf, lipstick.
Not keen on feel/of foundation/powder anymore.
Think eyes look worse with makeup whereas when younger looked better.
Can get ready quicker than oh now.
Love the no hassle of it and still look after skin but not bothered if I am at an event without it whereas before it would have been a no go.
What does everyone else do and think?
Has anyone else decided to get rid of makeup and regretted it or so glad?
It will give me a lot more room too.
Would love to hear others thoughts young or my age or older?

I was never one for a full heavy face of makeup but have gone even lighter on it now I'm in my forties.
The Dr jart anti redness treatment was a game changer.
It evens out my skin, neutralises any redness but you can't tell I'm wearing anything at all.
I add a peachy gel blush, cream bronzer, brown mascara and a lip balm and that's all.
I fix with a setting spray if I'm going to be out and about for a while and want it to last.

Eeek, Ive gone against the grain here

59 and Im embracing makeup for the first time since my 20's lol

But for me its been because for so much of my life I was severely depressed and just getting through the day was all I could manage but these past 18 months Ive done a lot of work on me, getting myself physically fit ( doing my first marathon mext month ), losing a shed load of weight, investing in a skin care regime, looking after hair and nails, finding a wardrobe Im comfortable in etc so finally I felt confident about trying cosmetics again

Its been trial and error and the first few times of leaving the house wearing it were daunting - esp to work - but any comments made have been along the lines of - you are looking really well today, did you get your hair done? So I guess Im managing to pass of a natural look - me but brighter

I use a light foundation, a bit of blush, bit of bronzer - 5 mins tops. If Im going out out I add a bit of mascara. Still learning to do eyes and lippy looks awful on me

OMG! I feel like I could of written this!
Early 50s but have only recently started wearing make up since teens as most of my life I had undiagnosed PMDD and was severely depressed and very obese so kinda hated myself.

Since menopause Ive lost over 7st, got fit, changed my whole personality (apparently I am now a different person according to friends and family!). Part of that is caring about my appearance and enjoying clothes and make up again.

I tend to use BB cream, concealer, powder, bronzer, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner and LIPPY 😀. Sounds alot but most people just seem to think I look much better and healthy when Im wearing it so I think Im pulling off the natural look!

I think thats the nice thing about being in your 50s...its like the 'give a fuck' section in your brain just shrivels up meaning you can happily do whatever you like and screw what anybody else thinks!
Wear make up or dont...whatever makes you happy!

When I first saw this thread, I thought it was about late 1950s style make up like this.

For what it's worth, I'm 53 and hardly ever wear make up any more. However, when I do my brows, I feel loads better (my brows are disappearing and it makes my face look like an undefined potato)

@wavingfuriously
I had to Google over several weeks to locate a makeup artist who did more than wedding makeup. Many of the beauty salons didn’t even reply.

in the end a lovely woman popped up on FB. She works from home and did a really good job. It was a tad more dramatic than I would usually go for because she gave me a bit too much “eyebrow” but all my family and friends really liked it and I learned a lot of “modern makeup” methods.

BollockstoThis1 · 31/05/2024 11:37

58 and I have some really nice natural looking liquid blusher from beauty and the boutique. I wear some of that most days to make me look and feel healthier and thats it. If I am going out I will do a little mascara and concealer and BB or CC cream from there but generally I can’t be bothered.

suburburban · 31/05/2024 11:39

I've got some on. Light tinted moisturiser, cream eyeshadow with eyeliner tight lined, mascara

Blusher, almost lipstick by Clinique

I feel polished

CapaciousHag · 31/05/2024 11:46

Presumably you’re not near a Selfridges branch, @PashaMinaMio, or you could have tried this. The link is to the Manchester store but I imagine other branches offer a similar service - which might be helpful to anyone wanting a helping hand with experimentation. Scroll down to ‘Beauty Concierge Makeover’

Bellevilles · 31/05/2024 11:48

Concealer, peachy blush, khaki pencil liner and mascara, tiny bit of brow definition, vaseline for lips.

I used to love red lipstick but these days I find I can only wear tinted, not full colour.

Holluschickie · 31/05/2024 11:49

I note MAC has a 30 minute makeover for only £30. Just to play up one feature. My eyes used to be my best feature but they have got a bit hooded with age. Maybe I might try that.

I am close to Selfridges in London but find it very intimidating! The salesladies are scary!

Holluschickie · 31/05/2024 11:51

the link to MAC. https://www.maccosmetics.co.uk/book-appointment I don't work for them, honest.

CapaciousHag · 31/05/2024 11:55

I think the Beauty Concierge makeovers at Selfridges are done in the salon, not by sales assistants on the main floor, @Holluschickie. They use products from any and every brand.

Although I know several of the brands also offer makeovers using only their own products. That’s less satisfactory - unless it’s the Tom Ford counter! (This thread is making me nostalgic for all the time I spent loitering there.)

Waitingfordoggo · 31/05/2024 11:57

I’m mid 40s and look much better without make up IMO. Foundation in particular is terrible for settling in lines and making me look older. I will wear mascara if I’m going somewhere smart but that is rare so I’m mostly bare-faced.

StMarieforme · 31/05/2024 12:16

I wear light make up for work and full make up for going out etc. love it. 61.

goingdownfighting · 31/05/2024 12:39

@Holluschickie I have mine in John Lewis. It's a bit quieter.

WayOutOfLine · 31/05/2024 12:54

@Holluschickie I also get my dd to help me, she's late teens and has a great knowledge of what young people wear- I don't mean the spider lashes and the orange look, I mean the no-make up fresh look, I have just tweaked a couple of things she mentioned, used more sheer or glossy products (not shiny!) and I don't wear powder/chalky things, although occasionally dab a bit on nose.

ItsNotInMyMind · 31/05/2024 13:52

I wear more now than I ever did while younger, but ironically I wear it to look as if I’m natural/fresh faced. Concealer for eyes, well shaped brows but not OTT, Laura Geller light foundation, creamy pale eyeshadow, mascara and a nude-ish lipstick. I do love a lipstick. Favourite is Dior Addict Shine, pricy so just have two of those shades. Usually a brush of bronzer.

Only wear it if I’m going out, in the house my DH has to face me truly natural lucky him.

Craftycorvid · 31/05/2024 13:56

@henlake7 what a lovely post! Finally: someone else for whom a positive of menopause was weight loss and more even emotions. My ‘give a fuck’ region of the brain is ancient history too. 😆

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2024 13:59

I'm 56 and you will have to prise my makeup out of my cold dead hand

KnittedCardi · 31/05/2024 15:55

I'm 58 and gave up entirely several years ago. It's really liberating. Most of my friends don't bother on the day to day either. I will put on mascara and lipstick for a special occasion, but nothing on my face. I have pretty good skin, and am quite naturally pink, with dark pink lips. Make up just alters me too much. Also don't highlight my hair either. I am very fair haired, and no-one noticed when I went from white/blond, to white/white!

For extra context my DM wore heavy make up her entire life, wouldn't leave her bedroom without it. Fully made up with dark brown hair, even at 92. It was truly awful. She looked like a caricature.

PashaMinaMio · 31/05/2024 16:09

@CapaciousHag
Thank you so much for the Selfridges suggestion.
We have a John Lewis so (light bulb moment) I’ll see what they can do.

Someone up post used the term “polished” so yes, that’s what make up, not too much day to day mind, makes me feel. I hope I never want to stop a little bit of that polish! 😊

goldeneye77 · 31/05/2024 16:38

I'm glad I started this thread as very interesting to read what others say

49 and as a minimum I need undereye concealer and blusher.

I can happily wear no make up at all if doing nothing at home but I do look tired without it. Am told I look good with less make up though.

I used to wear nearly full make up everyday for work but these days part time hybrid working in an unglamorous job means it's no longer necessary.

FindingMeno · 31/05/2024 17:02

Such an interesting thread!

I only very rarely wear make up but keep trying to push myself to wear mascara and do my brows - trying to make a habit and failing miserably.

Now I am older I have learnt to see my positives and don't even mind voicing them. I have lovely skin and hair. My skin is beautiful with its natural tones and looks so healthy. I also love my smattering of freckles.
I find any form of foundation or powder feels like a mask, and looks like one, on me.

I can also see my negatives and sit with them happily. My lips have become thin - particularly my upper lip. Sometimes I vaguely consider lip filler, but in the meantime I prefer not to wear lip make up ( although if anyone has a suggestion I'm all ears)

My eyes would look prettier with mascara and my brows filled in. I am a little worried about dragging the skin around my eyes removing it every night though.

One thing I don't do is wear spf though I really should. I can't find anything that is suitable for my hyper sensitive eyes, and that doesn't make my face sweat so I sweat it all off. Any suggestions anyone?

Blackcats7 · 31/05/2024 17:08

I got to an age (about 40) where I finally thought why is my actual face not good enough? The time and money I wasted over the years trying to "improve" my face annoys me.
