Late fifties makeup or no makeup

goldeneye77 · 30/05/2024 10:24

Prefer not to wear makeup anymore.
Don't think it makes me look better.
Was thinking of getting rid of it all and just continuing with moisturised skin, concealer if spots, spf, lipstick.
Not keen on feel/of foundation/powder anymore.
Think eyes look worse with makeup whereas when younger looked better.
Can get ready quicker than oh now.
Love the no hassle of it and still look after skin but not bothered if I am at an event without it whereas before it would have been a no go.
What does everyone else do and think?
Has anyone else decided to get rid of makeup and regretted it or so glad?
It will give me a lot more room too.
Would love to hear others thoughts young or my age or older?

I'm 55 and I am definitely not giving up makeup!

I look washed out and dull without it, my skin is very pale.

I love a light foundation, a little blusher, my eyebrows need a bit of filling in and I would be lost without mascara and neutral coloured lip gloss. I just wear a neutral coloured eyeshadow with a little darker shade on the outer corners.

I never quite know what people mean by how foundation "feels on the skin". I don't "feel" anything but I know for sure it makes my skin look fresher and brighter.

DappledThings · 30/05/2024 10:28

I stopped wearing it at about 30

MorrisZapp · 30/05/2024 10:33

I only wear 'foundation' on special occasions and it's a light tint anyway, for all the reasons you listed. Also pale skinned so I use fake tan instead.

It's not the absolute banker it used to be, I have to be careful to keep a light touch, but I can't see me giving it up.

The only thing that still reliably improves my appearance is cream blusher, and again I have to aim for a light touch or else look insane.

vidflex · 30/05/2024 10:36

I switched to a tinted moisturiser, cream blush, mascara and a lip oil. Much better. Normal foundation makes me look caked. I think less is more as we get older for sure

BigDahliaFan · 30/05/2024 10:37

I think less is more unless you really know what you are doing. And even if you do you are going for the less is more look.

I've never really know what I was doing so tend to wear mascara, tinted moisturiser and lipstick if I'm out.

goingdownfighting · 30/05/2024 10:39

My make up is getting lighter as I get older but my skincare has really upped its game.
Treatments as well as skincare at home.

Floisme · 30/05/2024 10:39

Late 60s and mostly only wear lipstick.

It's partly lack of interest - I'm obsessed with clothes but can't be bothered with make up or skin care routines. It's also because on the very rare occasions recently when I've tried wearing a bit more, I look like a badly painted china doll and can't understand why I never saw it before.

I do like my lipstick though, which funnily enough I never wore when I was young.

WeRateSquirrels · 30/05/2024 10:46

Love my makeup at 52. Haven't had issues with foundation not sitting right, but I am very diligent about skincare, and it's only a light foundation anyway. Have tried BB/CC/tinted moisturiser but they all seem too dark/orange (including Erborian). Don't wear much round my eyes but I never did because it doesn't suit me.

StarDolphins · 30/05/2024 10:52

I’m only wear serum & tinted moisturiser (which I water down with face cream!) blush, eyeshadow & mascara! No eye liner!

ManilowBarry · 30/05/2024 10:52

I love wearing g make up. If you can feel it on your skin then you're not using the right product.

My eyes open up with eyeshadow and eyeliner and my lips look better with added colour.

Blusher is essentials, much more so than when I was young.

I love choosing and buying make up and applying it.

It doesn't take me very long to apply it as it know what the look I want and it takes a few minutes.

Holluschickie · 30/05/2024 10:54

I am in my early 50s and only wear a light BB cream, eyeliner and lipstick. I hear you on it making some people look worse. I look like Eddie Izzard if I wear a lot these days. I have good skin though.

hattie43 · 30/05/2024 10:58

Always

MorrisZapp · 30/05/2024 11:02

My best pal still wears inky black eyeliner, it looks utterly awful but it makes her feel confident I guess. We're both 53.

Holluschickie · 30/05/2024 11:09

Make up is a skill really, which I don't seem to have mastered. I had some professional makeup done recently because I went on TV, and he managed to make me look good with eyeshadow, blush and foundation, in about 10 minutes. If I do it at home, I look like I am in drag.

Averagelife · 30/05/2024 12:08

I was just asking myself this today as well. Early 50’s and I don’t really go anywhere anymore and wfh so haven’t worn it for the last couple of years.

On the rare occasion it’s been much more subtle, little mascara and tinted moisturiser. To be honest, ever since lockdown, I think there’s been a shift.

I know my Mum at my age was still wearing a full face but I can’t be bothered. I just make sure that my skin care is good and eat well.

Abitorangelooking · 30/05/2024 12:14

I am mid 40s but I’ve gone relatively light make up too. So I do wear an concealer under eyes, any red bits, mascara, bit of lip gloss, little bit of illuminating primer over cheeks and an spf.

I think natural with highlights suits me better, makeup settles into wrinkles and really highlights them. People tend to place me younger, I think as I look really fresh faced 😉

goldeneye77 · 30/05/2024 12:17

Also I want to be me and sometimes I feel previously I am making myself look different but I know makeup can enhance features.
I just feel that I want to show my real face and don't feel like I should feel the need to makeup. I know that a lot of people enjoy makeup though and I have in past. I may go back to it but I think my skin looks alot better and I look more fresh and feel like me.

Try Ali Andreea on make-up for over 40's or over 50's, I can't remember which, she's on YouTube, if you want to continue but have fresh-looking make-up.

If you don't, or you want to drop down to just one or two products (spot concealer and mascara would be mine) then all power to you!

RDMPrules · 30/05/2024 12:21

I'm 46 and have never really worn a lot of makeup. I saw an old friend the other day, she's similar age to me and I haven't seen her for about 10 years. She had a full face of foundation on and I thought it looked really obvious, and actually showed up the crowsfeet round her eyes. My face is far from perfect but I'm not convinced it's improved by make up. I ocassionally put on lipstick and mascara if I'm going out, that's it.

ZekeZeke · 30/05/2024 12:22

I've yet to see anyone that looks better without make up.(unless you are supermodel like with zero blemishes or early 20s)
I m not saying plaster it on, some light foundation, bronzer, concealer, eyeshadow, mascara and lipstick.
takes me exactly 5 minutes in the morning.
edited to add. Use good make up, and less is more

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 30/05/2024 12:27

I don't wear makeup unless I'm going out. Then it's just a bit of serum, Olay tinted 'fair', bit of mascara and lipgloss (I like Rimmel 'oh my gloss'). I always wear lipgloss at the gym or swimming as my lips can be dry.

I used to wear a full face of slap but, it doesn't look as it did and the mirror doesn't lie.

I have never, ever, managed not to make eye liner look dreadful so I gave that up years ago.

same here..where do you find someone that would teach you?

Floisme · 30/05/2024 12:34

I'm all for playing around with make up for as long as you want to, provided you enjoy the process. But it doesn't sound like you do, op plus people have different tastes so opinions will always be divided as to whether or not it really enhances the appearance. So in your case, I say what's the point?

As you say there's no need to renounce it forever - you can go back to it any time you change your mind although if you're anything like me, you might end up wondering why on earth you bothered in the first place.

I’ve paid for a make up lesson at a beauty counter before. It was £40( probably more now!) it took about half an hour and I got a £40 discount on products I bought on the day so essentially free.

Bobbi brown is often recommended but the makeup isn’t cheap so I’d have a think about your budget before you go.
