Late fifties makeup or no makeup

goldeneye77 · 30/05/2024 10:24

Prefer not to wear makeup anymore.
Don't think it makes me look better.
Was thinking of getting rid of it all and just continuing with moisturised skin, concealer if spots, spf, lipstick.
Not keen on feel/of foundation/powder anymore.
Think eyes look worse with makeup whereas when younger looked better.
Can get ready quicker than oh now.
Love the no hassle of it and still look after skin but not bothered if I am at an event without it whereas before it would have been a no go.
What does everyone else do and think?
Has anyone else decided to get rid of makeup and regretted it or so glad?
It will give me a lot more room too.
Would love to hear others thoughts young or my age or older?

I'm 64 and haven't worn makeup since I was in my teens. I barely wore any on my wedding day. If you are happy not to wear any then don't, it's solely your choice.

flyingwingsabove · 31/05/2024 06:59

I have just off loaded a lot of my make up to DD. All I wear now is a tinted SPF, blush, mascara and a wand mascara thing on my eyebrows. Don’t wear it everyday now either. 53.

catwithflowers · 31/05/2024 07:10

Also late 50s and wear mascara, sometimes concealer and lipstick. Very occasionally blusher. Like a pp, I have upped my skincare game over the last few years and now use Tretinoin and factor 50 SPF moisturiser every day.

suki1964 · 31/05/2024 07:21

Eeek, Ive gone against the grain here

59 and Im embracing makeup for the first time since my 20's lol

But for me its been because for so much of my life I was severely depressed and just getting through the day was all I could manage but these past 18 months Ive done a lot of work on me, getting myself physically fit ( doing my first marathon mext month ), losing a shed load of weight, investing in a skin care regime, looking after hair and nails, finding a wardrobe Im comfortable in etc so finally I felt confident about trying cosmetics again

Its been trial and error and the first few times of leaving the house wearing it were daunting - esp to work - but any comments made have been along the lines of - you are looking really well today, did you get your hair done? So I guess Im managing to pass of a natural look - me but brighter

I use a light foundation, a bit of blush, bit of bronzer - 5 mins tops. If Im going out out I add a bit of mascara. Still learning to do eyes and lippy looks awful on me

CapaciousHag · 31/05/2024 07:28

and lippy looks awful on me

The word lippy is probably best avoided …

GoingUphill · 31/05/2024 07:32

I'm nearly 40 and could probably count on the fingers of one hand how many times I've worn makeup since 30. I've no doubt I'd look loads better with makeup on, but I just don't have the time or inclination to bother about it (time also including researching which products to buy, etc, not just the actual application time).

Why?

Serious question, have I made some faux pas Im not aware of?

CapaciousHag · 31/05/2024 07:53

It’s not a word I’ve ever heard an actual woman use, @suki1964. Not once in over 60 years.

Very much conjures up images of the green room at a drag queen convention - which is fine if one is a drag queen, but sounds odd if one is not.

Mayhemmumma · 31/05/2024 08:13

Less is more. I'm 40 and rely on mascara, bronzer and lip balm. I try to keep my skin nice but I guess it'll get harder, I religiously use retinol, spf45 and a nice night cream. These things are much more expensive than the make up I use.

I've heard it used loads of times all my life

Nothing to worry about

I'm in my 50s and don't wear make up, just a moisturiser with sunscreen in it.

I don't dye my hair either but I do have a great cut.

I have a lot of fun with outfits though and wear a lot of bright colours and fun silhouettes.

Btw nothing wrong saying liippy. I've heard loads of women say that.
Well done on your progress and all the positives you've done so far.

Older than you by nearly a decade and i still wear make up. It definitely makes me look better. But the make up I wear has changed. I now wear a light reflecting foundation, cream blusher and lighter lipsticks. I hardly wear any eyeshadow now but always mascara. I enjoy wearing it.

PortalMania · 31/05/2024 08:25

Holluschickie · 30/05/2024 11:09

Make up is a skill really, which I don't seem to have mastered. I had some professional makeup done recently because I went on TV, and he managed to make me look good with eyeshadow, blush and foundation, in about 10 minutes. If I do it at home, I look like I am in drag.

This is me except for the TV bit!

ChevyCamaro · 31/05/2024 08:35

Or can you find a teen girl to teach you? Or Tiktok? DD has been promising to teach me how to do eye makeup but I have never got round to it.

Thats made me lol. Why would a teenage girl have a better idea how to put on make up than a woman who has been doing it for 40+ years??
I am still 40s but I bloody love make up and can’t see that changing.
Today I’m doing quite gothy eyes- kohl not liquid though- because it goes with my look today ( and the weather).

AnnieSF · 31/05/2024 08:38

I will be that crazy old woman with the mascara eyes! I have loved mascara since I was a teenager using Miners and will never give it up. 🥰

TheDandyLion · 31/05/2024 08:48

I could never get the foundation right, it would make me look flat so I needed all extra like blush, contour, highlight to balance it out and it just looked caked on. It's a skill I never learned properly. And there's no point using eyeshadow or eyeliner with my hooded eyes. I gave up trying to be good at makeup in my 30s.
Good skincare, light brown mascara and a lovely collection of blushes is what I use for my face beauty.

Portakalkedi · 31/05/2024 09:26

I was just thinking about this yesterday, was going 'out' and put on foundation, blusher, the whole lot. Felt uncomfortable and thought it looked chalky and aging but didn't have time to redo, so took a damp flannel and took most of it off. Today's task is to search for something better, more creamy/dewy. Most days I just do my brows and use a little concealer, but feel I need a bit more definition when 'out'. Anyone using Violet Jordan stuff? Comes up on Facebook sometimes, aimed at older women.

Startingagainandagain · 31/05/2024 09:58

Interesting thread.

I am 53 and I have wear very little make-up.

A bit of mascara, peach blusher and lipstick and only if I go out somewhere special/socialise.

I have always hated foundation.

I prefer to focus on good skincare and eating a balanced diet to help my skin.

I think it is also because I got more comfortable in my skin/confident as I grow older and I no longer feel the need to cover up. Whereas when I was younger I was really paranoid about my appearance and always thought I was ugly.

But I think you should do whatever makes you feel good about yourself. If you enjoy wearing make up, age should not be an issue.

Also I live somewhere more rural now (was in London before that) and a full face of make up no longer suit my lifestyle :).

Zebracat · 31/05/2024 10:44

64 and I don’t really like makeup, but when I do use it, I get lots of compliments. My Dh is firmly in the natural camp, but thinks I look better with it on. I might do it once or twice a month if we are going out. I currently use a Boots tinted moisturiser, Bobbi Brown lipstick inBlue Raspberry which is closest to my natural lip colour, tubing mascara, currently Eyeko and a Rimmel eyebrow pencil in light brown. The eyebrow pencil is the thing that makes most difference. I don’t look made up, just a bit less blurry. My hair is shocking though, naturally curly, but the curl is irregular and falls out now my hair is lots of grey shades. I get it cut about once a year and it really isn’t enough.

Craftycorvid · 31/05/2024 10:54

When I was in my teens and twenties I tried very hard to ‘correct’ all the flaws I could see in myself using make-up. I guess the Sistine chapel ceiling may have been an apt comparison in terms of effort and attention I put into my face. What should have been fun and playful was actually rather grim and punitive, and I wasn’t any happier with myself as a result, though did believe I couldn’t leave the house without a full face of make-up. My first boyfriend would tend to flounce and sulk if he saw me putting on lipstick but otherwise ignored the whole process. He had decided it wasn’t quite ‘nice’ for women to wear make-up. So many messed up ideas!

Now it’s a choice - am I mostly protecting my skin against the sun? Am I wanting to look groomed but simply put together? Or do I feel like playing today? As it should be!

And…lippy, lippy, lippy! 😆

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 31/05/2024 11:01

Not going on my experience. In early 50s.

My ex colleague used to wear a very good foundation (high end) and everything else to go with it. She looked good.

My nana into her 80s wore no foundation but blusher, lipstick and very occasionally eyeliner and mascara. Similar story to my step grandmother. This was in the days when there was less choice for foundations but both had very good skin (despite smoking, drinking alcohol etc).

toomanytonotice · 31/05/2024 11:04

Nope. Never wear it. It makes me look terrible.

never really have liked how make up looks on me though.

Holluschickie · 31/05/2024 11:08

I just looked at a photo DH took of me yesterday without any makeup, and boy, my eyes look tired and puffy. I spend most days staring at a screen. I guess I do need to wear a bit more eye makeup at least.
