Late fifties makeup or no makeup

goldeneye77 · 30/05/2024 10:24

Prefer not to wear makeup anymore.
Don't think it makes me look better.
Was thinking of getting rid of it all and just continuing with moisturised skin, concealer if spots, spf, lipstick.
Not keen on feel/of foundation/powder anymore.
Think eyes look worse with makeup whereas when younger looked better.
Can get ready quicker than oh now.
Love the no hassle of it and still look after skin but not bothered if I am at an event without it whereas before it would have been a no go.
What does everyone else do and think?
Has anyone else decided to get rid of makeup and regretted it or so glad?
It will give me a lot more room too.
Would love to hear others thoughts young or my age or older?

I've never worn much makeup - I'm 68 now and haven't worn any since I was about 40. I just use moisturiser and lipstick. Makeup on older faces is very ageing imho.

Seriously? 🙄

I think bad makeup looks bad on older women. But then I think bad makeup looks pretty rubbish on anyone of any age.

Floisme · 31/05/2024 17:59

I'm not opposed to the idea of make up. I'd go back to it if I could recapture how it felt wearing it as a teenager when it was exciting and fun. I went off it because all the fun had gone out of it and it had become just another chore - and I've got enough of them.

kerstina · 31/05/2024 19:23

I am 55 still wear moisturiser, a tiny bit of concealer ,eyeshadow, mascara, liquid blush and lip liner/ lip stick. Oh and liquid eye liner on top lid. Sometimes a bit of highlighter . certainly have paired down the amount of make up I wear and I didn’t wear any on holiday the other week. I am still interested in trying new make up though. I found a lovely highlighter gloss stick in one of those cult beauty boxes. Really pretty .

I wear a little mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner, lippy, lipline, tinted moisturiser, and a bit of face powder, when I go outside of my home and garden. Otherwise CBA. I look OK without make up, but much better with it. Also 6-7 look younger with it on. (Mid 50s.)

Although it's not acceptable to say this on Mumsnet, the vast VAST majority of women look better with make up. Most will look OK/good/fine without it, but better with it. And no WAY does anyone look older with it on @starrynight47 Not in a million years. 😆

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 31/05/2024 19:34

I stopped wearing makeup after the teenage years and never regretted it.

Most women I know don't wear makeup.

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2024 20:36

I agree most older women look better with make up but it does depend on how you apply it. Badly applied heavy make up often can age you . My Nan was very attractive but when she was in her 70’s my Mum used to say she wore too much rouge. I think this is what put my Mum off wearing any once she hit 50. I think I will be more like my Nan still wearing it in my 70’s 😂

I’m 65 in July (that seems very weird as I still feel about 45)! I stopped wearing eye make-up about 5 years ago, as I was finding it uncomfortable. Mascara (various brands) in particular started to irritate my eyes. I then gradually gave-up wearing any kind of foundation and moved to a bit of BB cream. Since Covid, like so many women, I stopped wearing make up altogether. These days on rare occasions I’ll use a few spots of concealer under and over my eyes and on a few broken veins on my cheeks and a bit of lipstick. Recently though, I don’t even like the feel of lipstick 😳 I love fashion/clothes, but I’m pretty over make-up.

NewMe2024 · 31/05/2024 21:04

I’m in my 40s so don’t get a real say in this yet but have definitely gone for the less is more look the older I get. I also focus more on skincare, style, and wearing great colours vs. the war paint that was so much fun when I was younger. I don’t think I’ll ever look good with no makeup because I’m so fair that my eyes disappear altogether, but if I didn’t think I looked better with it on I would happily bin the lot and masking the liberation.

NewMe2024 · 31/05/2024 21:05

*bask in the liberation.

keffie12 · 31/05/2024 21:13

I've always been less is more with makeup. I don't use foundation anymore as I use demerlogica skin perfect primer, which gives a lovely natural colouring with a tint in it.

Bronzer to finish off with a little concealer, and that's it.

I do wear eye makeup, though sometimes just mascara and eyeliner and not the full works.

I've no plans of giving it up

No one is judgemental just saying what they prefer.

I’m not getting that at all. There are two posts who say make-up is unflattering on older women. The rest are just posting what they wear in a perfectly friendly fashion 🤷‍♀️

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2024 21:44

Read the thread. It really is. And you chiming in to validate the posters who agree with you 🤷‍♀️

anyway, I’m sticking with my make up. That I adapt and modify to suit my aging skin and that makes me happy. I certainly don’t wear it for anyone else. Which is one of the few benefits of getting older. I dress and present entirely for myself and my Pleasure.

Yep. There are more posts saying women always look better with make up, which I think is quite rude.

I can’t speak for all women, but I sure as hell do 😂

Osllo · 01/06/2024 08:53

I'm 55 and definitely not giving up make-up. I have modified it though - I don't use eyeliner any more, and use a lip tint rather than lipstick. I'm blonde though (light eyelashes and eyebrows) with slightly blotchy skin - I can imagine that darker people with more perfect skin feel fine without make-up.

For those saying their foundation settles in lines, you are using the wrong foundation. Or using powder. I do look older with powder on. I use foundation, cream blusher, neutral eyeshadow (with a darker one on lash line if going out in evening), eyebrow powder and mascara. Not every day, just if I am going further than the supermarket.

My mother is mid-80s and uses make-up on special occasions, she looks good.

usernother · 01/06/2024 09:05

Isn't looking better with it on the whole point of wearing makeup?

henlake7 · 01/06/2024 13:06

I have to say BB cream and concealer are def game changers for me.
I never bothered when I was younger, but back then my many, many freckles just looked normal.....now when added to the wrinkles and dark circles its just too much 'face clutter'LOL😅

I think so. I know I do but I don't care enough about that aspect of "looking good" to bother most of the time.

Clothes on the other hand are a different ball game. And it's clothes which catch my eye, not beautifully done make up.

For me no make up and terrible hair doesn't detract at all from a spectacular outfit; immaculately applied makeup up won't improve clothes I find unattractive one whit.

I completely disagree. Many women look better without. It's the societal norm that leads to the expectation that women should wear make-up to look better.

What's wrong exactly with looking natural. Men seem to manage perfectly well.

Kittensat36 · 01/06/2024 13:31

See, for me, I don't think I look better with make up. It makes me look very hard faced, like I will bite your children and steal your purse. I used to wear it, but no matter what I did, my eyes looked small.

This. It’s subjective and we are conditioned to think make up = glamorous, prettier etc.

most women would say they look ill without makeup, or tired, or it smooths out skin, or “enhances”.

but we don’t apply the same to men. We don’t think men look ill and tired without make up, we don’t think they look better with it.

i much prefer other people, and myself without make up. I don’t like subtle or “natural” make up especially, I think it hides natural beauty, not enhances.

i do actually like make up that’s not intended to improve, but have an impact. Very dramatic looks, men 80’s style Adam Ant etc- it’s a look, but not a “make up makes me more beautiful” look.
