Should I I keep this dress? Help me decide!

I bought this dress online from Me and Em about two weeks ago so I need to decide soon if I should keep it. I can't decide!!! I like it on me-the colours suit me and my chest area is awful (skinny, flat chested and uneven skin tone) so it's good this dress hides that area. But is it frumpy?
I really don't know any more. It's not for anywhere special, maybe wearing on holiday or out for dinner. Tell me straight if I should send it back please!

I've tried it on again and tried a tan belt. Hmmm.

It looks very nice on you, but really only you can decide how you feel about it.

jannier · 17/05/2024 23:07

If you're not sure you will end up hardly wearing it only buy what you really love or it's a waste

Bigcat25 · 17/05/2024 23:45

I think it looks great on you op. I didn't post before, but without knowing your height until you posted, and your comfort with the price point, it's hard to say. Since you've clarified that I'd say keep it, it fits really well. But mostly, go with your gut.

Scenicgirl · 17/05/2024 23:54

Everyone has different views on what they like, a lot depends on your height, weight and skin colouring. I personally don't like it and I think you could get a far nicer dress for much less money.

Verite1 · 17/05/2024 23:55

Me and Em generally really good quality and the fit and fabric is usually really nice. I think it looks lovely on you, particularly with the tan belt. Having said that, I do think that is a bit overpriced for what is, essentially, a smart day dress. My approach is if I love something and it makes me feel great, I’ll buy it full price. If I like it but don’t love it, I wait for the sales. At least half of the Me and Em stock seems to end up in there!

Also - I don’t get the hate for viscose. I think it can make a fabric flow beautifully. It’s not like polyester.

Viviennemary · 17/05/2024 23:56

I see you've decided to send it back. I think it looks lovely on you. Better than the model. But at that price if you don't love it then the best thing to do is send it back.

Erdinger · 18/05/2024 01:15

I like it and if it fits your budget and style keep it. You can change it up a bit with a different belt / shoes

Inspireme2 · 18/05/2024 01:22

Really like it.

TheGirlattheBack · 17/05/2024 09:54

My acid test for any new item of clothing is whether I love it, it makes me feel great and I want to wear it immediately. If 2 weeks later you’re still not sure then send it back.

I agree, you know straight away and it’s too expensive to sit at the back of your wardrobe.

Send it back as you’re not sure about it, that says it all.

DontforgetyourSPF · 18/05/2024 07:22

I wouldn't ever pay that for a dress anyway unless it was for something super important like a wedding.

I don't like it- sorry.

I think the colour, the style and the pattern all together is very 'little girly' and just not a good look. High neck, puff sleeves, flouncy frill and the swirly pattern. Nope. It looks like some 'take' on a school uniform dress.

Oncetwicethreetimesalady · 18/05/2024 08:07

My advice to dd is always “if you don’t LOVE it, don’t keep it” it goes triple when something is as expensive as this dress!
we have sooo much choice these days, we should be able to find things we love rather than settle.

Civilservant · 18/05/2024 08:10

Like how it looks on you but for the price would return it. You are slim so have many, many clothes options and will be able to get something at least as nice for a fraction of the price.

Civilservant · 18/05/2024 08:10

Also agree with posters that if you’re unsure, usually better to return, especially costly things!

Hotttchoc · 18/05/2024 08:12

If you like it and feel like you want to wear it or are looking forward to wearing it then keep it. You should know yourself if you are excited to wear it or not that bothered. If you feel it's frumpy then there's you're answer.

Its about how you feel in it not what random posters on Mumsnet think

pharmachameleon · 18/05/2024 08:21

Thanks everyone. I was out for an early dinner in the sunshine last night and saw that it was much older women who had on busy, printed dresses and younger women had on lovely, slouchy trouser suits. I mean, I'm old too-I'm turning 50 soon but I still want to dress younger!
The dress is definitely going back and the hunt now starts for a nice trouser suit! I might start a new thread as this has been fun 😂

Shame, I liked it. I do understand the age thing- I’m a similar age to you and I think there comes a point when you imagine a flowery dress is going to look like picture A but suddenly catch sight of yourself looking like picture B.

Should I I keep this dress? Help me decide!

Totally not. If you want to wear a dress then do. It's just a question of finding the right one for you. I personally cannot stand trousers suits but if you want one then get one. But don't let it be because you think you are too old to wear a dress.

pharmachameleon · 18/05/2024 08:59

@Viviennemary I don't think I'm too old to wear dresses. I wear dresses all the time. It's more the print that I think is dated.

I really don’t like it, sorry, and it’s very expensive for what it is. Me and Em have nicer stuff.

Gosh I wish I hadn't looked at the website, I love this dress and could never justify the cost. My wedding dress was from Monsoon and just over £120 so this sort of price tag feels very 'ooh that's not for me'.

https://www.meandem.com/linen-blend-baroque-print-midi-dress-light-cream-black-pink

That dress is amazing.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 18/05/2024 09:45

It does look nice on you, but you’re tallish and slim so I think most things would.

I love Me and Em, but I’m not mad about this dress. The colour, I hate, and I think floral dresses can look quite dated now.

QuestionableMouse · 18/05/2024 09:45

You can get nicer from the supermarkets for much less!
