Fat girl summer - let's slay 💅

So, for those of us who are chunky yet funky, what's the plan ladies?

Shall we give no fucks and wear nice comfy summery clothes or do we worry about keeping every inch of us covered head to toe in black until we sweat so hard we melt? What's the plan?

Currently a size 20/22 myself, unlikely to get down to a magical size 14 by July so I'm looking at the nice comfy looking linen pants, few maxi dresses, shorts because I'm a wee chubby pale rebel and to really go wild a jumpsuit or two.

Simply be has some lovely things at the moment including shoes, asos curve is looking alright and vinted is my best pal.

I'm 35 for a few more months and don't want to have another summer in my 30s hating my body, so this year I'm going to embrace it. Anyone with me?

@Hecatoncheires aw. Thank you! I’ve had a crap day so that really cheered me up. I think I will keep it. I’ve already accounted for the money.

@Soccermumamir that sounds annoying. You’d think it would be manmade fabrics that would cause you irritation. Hope you’re able to find suitable stuff.

Yeah it's very annoying. I have to check all labels before I buy and if I buy online I have to check the description. Vented is great as you can choose your materials on there which makes it easier.
The GP reckons it may be the dyes they use when creating the garments. Not sure but it's so uncomfortable and itchy.

That sounds like a pain! I’ve found a lot of viscose stuff is really good these days, nice and light for summer. I used to only wear cotton and linen but modern viscose is good for being cool and not sweaty.

Same. I'm starting to buy more viscose or polyester. I can wear cotton where it may be only like 30% then 70% polyester. Anything over 50% is a no go. And linen is out.

Shorts n T-shirts or dresses above the knees with short cycling shorts underneath, no fucks given, if someone doesn’t like what I’m wearing it’s their problem not mine!
shein/Temu & yours clothing
tankini instead of a swimsuit as it’s easier for using the toilet when wet from swimming 🤣🤣
size 26/28 with a massive over hanging belly!

I fucking love this! You inspire us hen, you go!

Oh my god, found this thread yesterday after coming to Mumsnet to whinge I was fat and sad and worried sick about going to a wedding next month.
Have now spent HOURS reading these posts and getting really happy! Have ordered dresses and chub rub shorts, dyed my hair and ordered tanning moisturiser, and I’m actually excited about the summer and the wedding 😁❤️ 💅
I think I actually love you guys!!!! Thank you 🙏
I’m only on page 12 but had to comment 😂 Also want to recommend Forgotten Tribes peacock pants, so comfy and cool, and great for people like me with the ever changing size belly (endometriosis)

Lwrenn · 07/06/2024 12:06

I just stepped on a bloody rake outside, scarcely missed my nose or I'd have had a gorgeous shiner to style. 🙈

I hope you're all enjoying the nicer weather and aren't twatting yourselves in the face with anything heavy.

I have a pair of Forgotten tribes cropped Harem Pants (same pattern as the striped harem pants) but bought years ago, and they are so cool, as in temperature. I wore them last month in Greece - they've a wide shirred waistband and therefore extremely comfortable. I don't think they have the same ones now but I was considering getting another pair.

ChishiyaBat · 07/06/2024 13:22

It's so nice to read all the positive tales on this thread❤️.
I'm off work until Sunday and toddler wrangling my feral creature of a granddaughter so it's house pjs all the way for me until then, then it's back to my ugly as fuck uniform😂. The weather is crap here today and i've been shivering and considering putting the heating on for the last 2 days😂. Hope you are all having a wonderful day and have a great weekend❤️.

I've been inspired to start sewing again! I know that there is a much better choice of clothes shops for us big girls to shop in these days, but I still find so much of the stuff drab and uninteresting. Even when you're prepared to pay a lot of money for something, it's just SO bloody hard to find a size that actually FITS!! If I were years younger, I'd be seriously tempted to try and start the sort of shop that I would like to shop in, but age and disability are against me these days. However, having always been able to sew, but mainly doing house stuff like curtains and cushion covers, etc., over recent years, I've decided to have a go at making my own clothes again, and to this end have booked myself on a free online sewing course, to get me started on drafting my own patterns. Who knows, maybe some of you other ladies out there might like to start making their own clothes too?

That is amazing❤️
I would absolutely love to be able to make my own clothes, but alas I cannot use a sewing machine. I used to customise my own clothes eg a dress into a skirt when I was younger, but all the sewing was done by hand. My Nan was a seamstress and she used to make all my clothes for me as a child. I wish she'd passed her gift to me, but nope I can't sew, wouldn't know one end of a pattern from the other, I can't knit either.

Probably a bit of a long shot, but I wonder if anyone can resonate with my issue.
As I've stated, I'm tired of covering up and dressing in baggy clothing, but I also want to be mindful about what flatters. My bugbear is not so much my size—I'm objectively not that big (size 12 and 5'10)—it's my shape; I'm so loose and flabby on my stomach. I don't know why; I've always had a 'pouch' there, even when stick-thin. I have yo-yo dieted over the years, but never to a significant extent. I'm quite muscular underneath the flab 😂

I have a stomach that looks like I've had weight loss surgery or something, or had multiple very large babies (I’ve had none).

If I wear high-rise pants or shorts, it gives me a 'bum belly.' If I wear a tight-fitting dress, I have an apron belly. If I wear Spanx, it just pushes the flabby skin over the top, giving me a flabby waist.

I find skater dresses do not flatter me. I have friends much bigger than me who look much better in a dress, as despite their stomach being larger, it’s more of a uniform, solid shape, as opposed to mine which is a lumpy, droopy mess.

I did take a picture but don't have the courage to post it, so I did a ultra realistic drawing instead of my body type. I evidently gave up when it came to the limbs and face.

Something I am going to start with is dressing from the tall section. I think part of the reason I feel I never look right and can't disguise the unflattering parts of me is because clothes don't fit quite right, and I'm trying to step away from my norm of buying flowy, skater style dresses, as I am learning these don’t flatter much either. The issue is I just don't know what the alternative is. I have two maxi dresses which I love which are light weight material, but more straight line instead of flowy, maybe thats the sweet spot?

I do want to lose weight, I have to as I am hopefully starting fertility treatment end of this year/beginning of next, and I need to get my BMI out of obese catagory (im about 7lbs away), but I think even if I was to acheive that, that still wont resolve my body image issue which I need to work on overcoming.

I hope you enjoy my art work

Late post but we have the same figure!!

I took up sewing for exactly the same reason and I can do some bits and pieces. That said, I struggle so much with fitting myself. I’ve made a couple of t shirts and a skirt up to now.

Do you mind sharing the course you’ve signed up to? I’ve always fancied pattern drafting.

Chewbecca · 07/06/2024 16:03

I sew too, with the aim of making things that fit my odd shape… to no avail! It’s hard enough making something look decent, let alone adjusting a pattern to fit perfectly. I thoroughly enjoy it though and maybe one day!

ehb102 · 07/06/2024 16:37

I have to wear full length flat knit compression all summer so I have decided to embrace the maxi dress. I have three from Global Mandela that work very well and have one from TikTok which is AMAZING. Seriously, I was on there two minutes and bought it. Navy blue with a little pattern, it suits me so well I've ordered more. I actually put on jewellery for the first time in ages, pendant and earrings.

@FredsRoses I can't sew but it's such a wonderful talent. When I can't sleep I watch people on YouTube make dresses and the skill is excellent.

I used to customise things in my younger days with patches and badges and the occasional rhinestone but no any longer.

I'd love to see what you create!

Eurgh, I was just deleting my door camera footage from yesterday and I came across this corker. I had to go for an ultrasound yesterday morning, but it was chilly, so I put on a maxi skirt and vest, decided i'd be too warm with a jacket and too cold without so I added a mesh dress over the top. Except it's huge and make me look like I have no shape, if only i'd looked in the mirror before I left😂😭.

Late post but we have the same figure!!

Yey (not sure if that's something to yey?)

Have you ever looked into if there is a medical cause for it ? I'm in no way denial that I'm carrying extra weight, just the way it shows on me is so odd. I do have a fibroid about the size of a plum next to my left ovary, so I think that's causing some of the distention. I also saw pictures of women's who stomach muscles separated, my tummy kind of resemble that. But I've not had kids.

I went swimming with a friend the other day, she's plus size but carries her weight in a uniform kind of 'solid' way, I'm technically smaller than her but just looked so bumpy and odd next to her.

I have yo yo dieted a bit in past, but never to extreme levels but maybe enough to leave my tummy an odd shape.

I was thinking of booking an appointment, but worried they'll just say "yeah...its just cos your fat".

It was a bit chilly yesterday, so still had my MOM jeans on lol with white trainers. This top I bought 2 years ago and only worn it once for a show in London. Decided sod it, and wore it to work yesterday. Felt quite girly for once lol 😆
