Fat girl summer - let's slay 💅

So, for those of us who are chunky yet funky, what's the plan ladies?

Shall we give no fucks and wear nice comfy summery clothes or do we worry about keeping every inch of us covered head to toe in black until we sweat so hard we melt? What's the plan?

Currently a size 20/22 myself, unlikely to get down to a magical size 14 by July so I'm looking at the nice comfy looking linen pants, few maxi dresses, shorts because I'm a wee chubby pale rebel and to really go wild a jumpsuit or two.

Simply be has some lovely things at the moment including shoes, asos curve is looking alright and vinted is my best pal.

I'm 35 for a few more months and don't want to have another summer in my 30s hating my body, so this year I'm going to embrace it. Anyone with me?

You know what, I NEEDED this thread. I'm absolutely miserable, I'm the biggest I've ever been at a size 20/22 and I feel horrific. Like a fat ugly troll. I don't just feel big, I feel scaled up around normal size women! Luckily I have the most womdeful, big viking man who makes me feel normal 😂otherwise I'd never leave the house!!
So yes. Fuck it. I am NOT going to spend the summer hiding away. Thank you.

I bet you're a sexy couple! Come on lass, get your fucks chucked and let's enjoy summer x

I turned 50 this year and can honestly say for the first time ever I truly don’t give a fuck!! I will go out IN PUBLIC in shorts or with no make up on and don’t give two hoots if anyone is judging me.

I’m a size 18-20 with really chunky cankles and an apple shape, so not much ‘flatters’ me tbh but I’m absolutely loving this at the moment:

https://amzn.eu/d/aoZcDOI

it comes in a few different colours, fits my mahoosive boobs like a dream WITHOUT NEEDING A BRA!! because it’s shirred and it’s has pockets - the holy grail of women’s clothing. I feel like Disney Jasmine in it, with some gold sandals and a little cropped cardigan for when it’s cold. There’s loads of fabric so the arse area does look a bit baggy, but from the front I absolutely love it, and as I said, I don’t give a shit if anyone looks at me from the back and thinks I have a big bum. Anyway, all the young uns are trying to look like they have big bums!

Thanks @FeralNun - I really appreciated that. I've never struggled with confidence before even though I've always been bigger - I've always been really fit with it and this is the first time in my life really I've been so blobby! But I look at bigger people in the street and I don't notice bigness - I notice fab hair, or wicked shoes, or a really unusual sense of style. I don't think 'you great fat waller, you shouldn't even be out', so why do I assume people must be thinking that about me?! Its bloody strange! I have never, ever looked at ANYONE and thought they were ugly. People never are.

Yep, we’re always far far harder on ourselves than others (if you are a good person, which you obviously are!). Maybe just ask yourself when tempted to berate yourself with your imagined hideousness - would I speak to my best friend like this? Or even a stranger? No chance! So why do it to yourself?
Sorry to bang on - it’s just so important. What we repeatedly tell ourselves becomes ‘true’ in our minds, and changes our behaviour and how we feel. Fortunately this also applies to telling ourselves the good stuff! So embrace your gorgeousness and your Viking too (lucky cow 😂)

@Emotionalsupporthamster Any advice on how to wear kimono tops, wheee to find them and what shape they suit, please?

I love the look of them but not sure how to wear them.
I’m a tall 20-22 with a tummy and longish legs

mondaytosunday · 16/05/2024 10:41

@Weedkillerworks make sure your bottom half is in something straight and not wide. So no wide trousers. Long sleeveless dresses with little volume (but not tight) work well - just bought one off Yours. I plan on wear long kimono style jacket or lightweight shirt/blouse over it as I won't expose my arms. If you have a waist though a cropped kimono jacket will look nice. You just need to balance the volume of the top with a slimmer bottom.
Boo hoo has had nice kimonos in the past, if you have the budget 100 Stars. Box2 also has nice linen items and the models are all plus size.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 16/05/2024 10:49

Size 20/22, have a lovely selection of milkmaid dresses. I'm calling it cottagecore but really it's no longer give a fuck core.

The whomps are out, I'm not wearing a bra, if it's good enough for those renaissance gals then it's good enough for me.

HellonHeels · 16/05/2024 10:58

Love this thread! I'm a fatso, late 50s,, size 20-22.

I'm allergic to sunscreen so it's long sleeves, long skirts, chub rub shorts and hats for me. I'm also in thrall to the all black, got a few neutral colours I wear occasionally. Though actually I think black is a good summer colour.

I had more money last year and got some fab black items from https://walkers.style/ which was recommended on a thread about summer goth dressing. They do have good things in their sales (and also colours if that's your thing).

I'm a chonk and only 4foot 10 so I look even more massive. I won't get my legs out but I will wear my 3/4 length combat shorts and baggy tshirts for walking and knocking around in. When I go out I love my dresses and skirts maxi&midi(anything to hide my knees) chiffon shirts, cotton shirts, I am an alternative kind of dresser so lots of skulls, funky prints and huuuge platform sandals.

Amazing post! I am due my first baby any day now and have spent the last few weeks fantasising about what I’m going to wear over the summer - maternity clothes are AWFUL!

In the spirit of the post - I’ve always thought of myself as “fat”. Size 14. 5ft7. Only now, can I look at pictures of myself and think “WTAF you crazy bitch, you looked great” and I’m a little sad that I’ve wasted so many years not liking how I looked or picking apart my body. Not to mention the £££ spent on diet clubs, gym membership and diet food.

When this baby is outta here, I’m wearing all the clothes - whether I can see a wee belly roll or armpit/boob fat or a jiggly bit.

I’ve bought a beautiful pink midi dress from the Staud sample sale, an orange knit type vest from M&S and a pair of khaki combat style trousers - skinny style - I’m a millennial, skinnies will need to prised from my cold, dead hands! From vinted I’ve bought a white dress (£3.50!) and a pair of Chloe wedges.

Deargodletitgo · 16/05/2024 11:06

I'm a size 24-26 and wear shorts, vest tops, bikini's, all the clothes. Being covered from head to toe isn't going to make me look slimmer, just sweaty.

There's some lovely clothes out there, I'm a fan of H&M and Shein

I've bought a lot of clothes from George at Asda over the years and been impressed with their quality for the money. End of last year I got 2 pairs of wide leg linen cut off trousers ( don't know if that's the right term) but one is a very neutral beige and the other cream with green jungle leaves. Also have a black with white dotty pair which I've worn constantly, and vests and shirts and stuff!

Congratulations on your baby! Are you sweating like anything with the heat? You'll hopefully have the baby here soon and feel comfortable x

I'm obsessed with vinted, I've bought so much of mine and my families things from there and it's epic for babies, they grow out of everything so pointless buying everything from new.

I bet you'll look beautiful 😍

I’ve just bought loads of bright tights from snag tights instead of black leggings under short dresses. Then when iit is really hot I have their chub rub shorts or capri length tights. I never used to wear dresses because my thighs rubbed together and these fix all that!

ButterCrackers · 16/05/2024 17:28

Great thread. I’m looking for online shops that have long skirts and bright tops with sleeves. I looking for shorts style underwear that’s comfortable without seams.

YOURS Clothing has been a godsend for me the last few years. Specifically caters to those of us with a more voluptuous figure. The patterns and cut of the clothes are all really flattering and I'm always getting compliments despite feeling a bit self conscious at a size 20/22.
They've got a sale on currently so I've just stocked up my summer wardrobe with loads of gorgeous clothes.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 16/05/2024 18:32

Can I join? I’m 51. Size 20. Look like I’m 70. Dress like I’m dead already. My only summer go to is baggy capris because I can’t wear anything with a heel and floaty trousers quickly become mud encrusted bell bottoms. I carry a lot of weight between my boobs and my waist so most maxi dresses make me look pregnant. I have had some good stuff from George in the past. I’m breaking out the shorts this summer and am flirting with the idea of the wide leg shorts and light blazer look with some converse hi tops. That’s what daring means to me!

SplendidPendips · 16/05/2024 18:33

I'm a 20/22 as well and feel it! Praying for a cool summer this year. I work in an office with no air con so just look like a red, sweaty mess! I'm more into trousers than dresses/skirts and really love the cropped linen trousers from Evans or M&S. I also have some nice smart, slim fit crops from M&S for work. I wear these and linen crops with smart patterned short sleeve t-shirts. Only problem is that I carry most of my weight around my stomach so need a t-shirt style that flares out a bit. Evans used to be great for this (they called them shark bite, swing or pintuck tops) but seem to have stopped introducing new patterns now (presumably they are in difficulty??) and I can’t find many on Vinted etc. Anyone seem a similar style elsewhere?

Of course you join in for our summer slaying!

I can't wear heels due to ankle injury and I have to wear a more supportive sandal, so I get a slightly shorter leg when I wear wide leg pants, to save myself looking like a 90s teenager, that helps me. I'm only short so I get swamped easy.
Short, chubby, pale... I'm basically built to survive winter and burn and sweat from spring onwards 😂

I'm 35 too and same size as you. This has inspired me to not give a fuck. I really need to get some new clothes though. Can anyone recommend somewhere that does wide leg pants that fit around the waist. Also can I just recommend snag tights because I have pairs rear are 5 years old and havent snagged! They fit like a dream.

I've found asos to be quite good, loads of colours.

There are pants that look really good from a brand called cider, apparently they're magic, however I've never personally used them but I've seen many excellent reviews if you're after something that doesn't dig in.
But I can't comment on the quality.

Have a Google "viral cider wide leg pants" and see what comes up.

See, I feel old at 35 but reading you're 35 I'm thinking it's just so young to not enjoy summers and worry about clothes.

We're all too nice to not feel wonderful!
