Fat girl summer - let's slay 💅

1000 replies

Lwrenn · 15/05/2024 18:56

So, for those of us who are chunky yet funky, what's the plan ladies?

Shall we give no fucks and wear nice comfy summery clothes or do we worry about keeping every inch of us covered head to toe in black until we sweat so hard we melt? What's the plan?

Currently a size 20/22 myself, unlikely to get down to a magical size 14 by July so I'm looking at the nice comfy looking linen pants, few maxi dresses, shorts because I'm a wee chubby pale rebel and to really go wild a jumpsuit or two.

Simply be has some lovely things at the moment including shoes, asos curve is looking alright and vinted is my best pal.

I'm 35 for a few more months and don't want to have another summer in my 30s hating my body, so this year I'm going to embrace it. Anyone with me?

@MooBaggage I always look at Mille bras and have never bought! I'm a 40 F. Are you of bigger norkage than me? Are they comfy all day long?

LakeSnake · 29/05/2024 21:27

@MooBaggage re the Molke bra
Are you finding that they keep your boobs nicely separate?

Ive tried many wireless bra and the issue is always the same - my boobs touch each other. In summer, it all get extremely sweaty and uncomfortable. So I’m back to my usual bras again.
Wondering what’s your experience.

Ah is it just Evans then?

No this was years ago and I think Evans has changed now. I may have seen the brand with Next but not sure sorry.

Has anyone bought anything from live unlimited? Wondering about the quality...?

Liveunlimitedlondon.com

I've had quite a few items from them, a really nice leather jacket and several dresses which are great for work. I do think they are on the expensive side for what they are, but you can pick up sale items.
They have a concession in John Lewis in Brent Cross, I don't know if that's the case in other JL stores.

ChristmasLightsLover · 29/05/2024 22:47

@MooBaggage And... with the Molke bra that crosses over, does it show under smooth tops please? I don't like lace or patterns so think the crossover looks great... but am not sure on it.

I'm a 36gg and have recently found the elomi brianna to be lovely.

I also like Miss Mary of Sweden

Omg……l can’t believe l am only just finding this thread after a billion shopping trips to heighten my Sumer wardrobe.

lm 48 and a size 20-22

Honestly some store need to look at the sizing ratios. I have tried on a million dresses to tight on the arms but way to loose on the boob front and some lacking shape. Just because l am bigger doesn’t mean l need to wear a sack, sadly l am talking about Yours.

My budget isn’t great so tend to stick to Next, New look type shops. I have had a few hits in Sainsbury’s. Bon marche just opened a new shop in the town my mum lives in and we went in together l am really shocked at how nice some of the stuff is and that l am now in the target age range, the online is fantastic. I love dresses but as l have a young children was stuck in a bit of a leggings/jumper/ hoodie rut but now l need to step outside of that for me.

l used to work in clothing many moons ago and loved fashion so l have been looking for inspiration on Instagram there a girl called what l wore at size 24 and she has some nice outfits.l do think a lot of it is about staying rather than wearing the clothes.

One of my friends rave about shein, l am a bit unsure as a lot of her clothes from there seem see through but l ordered a few things and yes some things were just a waste of money but yesterday l had on this dress(in the photo below) and got three complementary comments, l am a girls girl so if l see someone looking nice l always say and yesterday l got paid back to me, needless to say it’s now going to be my favourite dress, l had already decided against it as well it was at the bottom of my wardrobe still in the bag, we were getting ready and my daughter said what’s this and l said l will wear it otherwise it will go to waste.

Glad l have found you all, off to look for some shorts/cream for under my dresses. I wouldn’t mind some bra recommendations.

Hello! I'm delighted you found us! That dress is so pretty! Did it wash nice?

If I find something I like that is pricier than what I'd be able to pay I search for it on vinted and buy it there for sometimes anything as low as a fiver.
Mumsnet introduced me to boden and I got some lovely boden sandals from vinted for £2, barely worn and much comfier than my usual primark ones.

Shein is tough, I love the look of the clothes, that dress you shared is gorgeous! I love the maxi dresses in the paisley or floral prints but I'm apprehensive about buying them when I've seen so many misses from shein.
I bought some home stuff from there yonks ago and it really didn't last. Cushions etc, the quality wasn't great but that was a very long time now.

I'm taking my 3 youngest children out today, we're going to go the aquarium if my youngest ds will cope, if not it'll be maybe the zoo and usually when we go places I want to wear only my black jeans, black hoodie, black converse (the theme is black!) And tomorrow I'm making the effort to wear something more cheerful. Wearing all black doesn't make me any smaller, just makes me feel very, "meh". I even painted my nails a nice corally shade for the occasion.
This thread really has made me feel quite excited about feeling nice again.

I love the phrase "girls girl", I love a complementary queen. I definitely will try telling more women how lovely they look because I think it all the time. A couple of years ago dp and I were walking away from dropping off out kiddo at school and I saw a lady looking devastated. I didn't say anything but just went over and held her hand and she hugged me, properly threw herself on me, I gave her the biggest squeeze for about 5 mins, she had a little cry on me and when she was done I went back to dp. He asked how I knew her and I said I didn't, she just needed a squeeze. I think complements are a version of that, just a little squeeze we could all use. So I am capable, I've just become more reserved and shy around people since covid, but I think that it many of us.

I'd love to wear vintagey/quirky clothes but I'm a bit of a scaredy cat, maybe next year I'll take the bravery leap!

Congratulations on your weight loss, it's really hard to stick to, you must be so proud!

Buy them and wear around the house. One day you have to rush to the shops or something with no time to change and suddenly your wearing them out. That's what I end up doing. I love interesting clothes but never have the guts to what them when it comes to it! X

Hecatoncheires · 30/05/2024 09:53

@Lwrenn It's either someone is chopping onions or your story about hugging that woman has made me teary.... What a kind and empathetic person you are. Bless your lovely heart. Don't suppose you're in Scotland? We could be friends!

Totally agree with dishing out compliments. I was renewing my driving license photo thingy at the post office in the big Asda the other day and the woman helping me was wearing her uniform of an apple-green polo top. The colour suited her really well and so I said she was rocking it, and it's a hard colour to wear so she's clearly mega-awesome. She was so chuffed and then we had a right laugh taking my picture and generally enjoying our 7-minute interaction.

In other general news, alas my teeny shoes from FitFlop are not quite right. They're a tad snug on my big toes, at the side corner of my toenail (if you see what I mean). I thought it might be that I needed the next size up so I ordered it but they're too big and slip off my heel. They're fairly soft leather so I'm wondering if they'll stretch. Decisions, decisions yet again......

Solongtoshort · 30/05/2024 10:23

@Lwrenn Thanks for the welcome.

Your thinking of shein is the same as mine, My dress has washed and dried beautifully lam going to wear it out this evening with friends.

l get what you mean about covid, l too think people are more reserved. I tend to think if there were more positive actions shown the world would be a better place well happier and a complement would cheer anyone up, the only thing more infectious than covid is a smile.

l haven’t decided what to do today l’m still struggling to get my 8yo in the shower and we have had all our big money days this half term so today is going to have to be free and tomorrow is visiting family.

Thank you @MooBaggage for the recommendation l think one thing you can’t shrimp on is bras l will look later.

Hope you all have a nice day.

I've been I. England for over 30 years but still have my Glaswegian accent although maybe not as strong,

This thread has me on the next app looking at jumpsuits. The elusive wide leg, full length, suitable for big boobs, easy to undo and generally flattering for plussize. So I think I've 5 in my basket but just can't quite hit the trigger.

I tried to take a pic of my dress yesterday to share, I do not photograph well. A nice black cotton shirred dress from next a few years ago. I feel funny wearing midi length. Much prefer maxi or just above the knee.

Lovely reading everyone's stories.

Wearing a £5 vinted dress today, camo green, shirred at the bust. I seem to suit an empire line

This is such an awesome thread! It's taken me days to read it because I kept stopping and ordering things. I've made my first Vinted purchase(s) and bought some shorts.

@Blueberrycreampie I'm the other side of the country from your motherland. My DD and I love to go through together and stay at the Premier Inn in Buchanan Galleries. Our visits basically involve me following her around and buying things! And eating. Hence my bulk...... 😁

To be honest most of Scotland is lovely - lived in Dundee for a while but couldn't wait to get back to Glasgow! Spent two separate weeks in Scotland last summer May/June and the weather was amazing! Your trips with your daughter sound fab!

wateringcanface · 30/05/2024 19:31

Tried on a few summer dresses today. Looked okay, I couldn't help be drawn to my big shoulders and upper arms, but I'm committed to wearing them without a jacket or shark, and letting my arms feel the sun this summer. (Just need the sun to come back out).

Also ordered a couple of vinted dresses from monsoon and oasis. They are straight up and down without any puffy or flowy material. Nothing to hide behind. Hopefully they'll be here in a couple of days

Seaside3 · 30/05/2024 20:00

My h and m order finally arrived, it was stuck with evri for ages.

So, I love, love this dress. I've got it for a relaxed.evening wedding do, and a 50th birthday. It's also perfect for my holiday. I am only 5'2", and a size 18. I've lost a few pounds lately, so git it in a large, and its perfect. It is long, but my legs aren't my favourite thing to show off. I'll.try for a headless photo on Saturday.

https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1222682002.html

I also bought these. Meant to be cropped, but they are ankle length, which suits me. A badly broken ankle years ago means it now swells and deforms in the heat, so I'm fine to keep it covered. The trousers are a bit snug, but I'm confident I'll drop a few more pounds, so happy with them https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0971104027.html

And I got this. Covers my mahoosive bingo wings and looks smart. Could probably have done with a larger size on my boobs, but didn't want it to loose as I.tend to drop weight on my rib cage 1st. I know, weird. But it gives me a more hour glass shape that I like to share, not hide. https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1179983001.html

Now I'm looking what to order.next!

Smocked off-the-shoulder dress - Short sleeve - Long - Black - Ladies | H&M GB

Long, off-the-shoulder dress in woven fabric with a smocked bodice and short sleeves. Narrow frill trim around the top, gathers at the waist and a flared skirt. Unlined.

Your arms, like my arms, and the majority of people who don't have slender toned arms, are just ... arms. We all, myself included make a big fuss about arms and they're arms. We need to stop hiding them don't we, they're literally just... arms!
And I appreciate mine, without them I'd struggle massively, I need to stop picking on my arms and be nicer to them.
I don't look at anyone elses arms and be mean to them, like I do my own, yet my arms are much more useful to me than anyone elses. Madness isn't it? 😂
All this insecurity over the most useful of appendages, how daft I've been.

I really hope your dresses are lovely!

Hi everyone, I wore something summery today, even though it did rain a bit, anyway before we left I had a wee wobble and asked dp what would happen if anyone said anything about my weight or looked at me funny. He said he'd throw them in and their loved ones in with the sharks. Anyway, everyone was smiley, lots of beautifully dressed women of all shapes and sizes gave me smiles and I actually felt lovely.
Even when my little lad declared as loudly as he could that "fish are shitheads", and kept telling me he only liked fish with his chips, it was one of our more successful days! I hope you all had lovely days also!

Also in Scotland here and it didn't rain! Which was great as I was helping out at DD's primary athletics championships which were held at DS2's high school.
I've got a 50th birthday on Saturday and it will be lovely. I'm not at all sure what to wear, but as someone has (very kindly) pointed out, it's the birthday girl's day!

weebarra · 30/05/2024 20:59

@Seaside3 , that is a gorgeous dress! I bet you'll feel lovely in it!
