My ex -husband (police) did 3 months duty over one summer at BP. It was garden party season so he frequently came home with leftover goodies. They were told to help themselves once the party was over.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 23/05/2024 01:56

It was lovely to see the wider family assisting at the Garden Party. Hopefully we'll see more of Bea, Eugenie & Zara at future events.

I loved what Zara was wearing, it really suited her.

Remember Great Uncle Bob? He assisted at a few garden parties & some of my late female relations helped do the sandwiches etc - we're going back a very good few years now!

@Runningupthecurtains glad you had an amazing day!

No more official royal engagements for the time being because of the Election, so we'll have to rely on Max et al, or a glam moment from Emma Weymouth etc for our style fix.

Apparently it won’t be all engagements and they’re being reviewed on a case by case basis. And the D Day commemoration and Trooping will still go ahead.

Yes, I saw that about DDay and Trooping.
There was a general apology about those engagements which can't be kept.
So we shall see.

Is that normal, I'd never noticed before.

Yes, that's usually the agreement.
It's so that they don't inadvertently take the focus off the campaign and/or a particular speech etc

God I wish they would I've had enough already 🙈

KillingMeDeftIy · 23/05/2024 07:50

I hadn’t actually heard of this agreement and honestly hadn’t noticed it in previous election years! But it makes sense - if say, Kate had an engagement on the same day there was an important campaign issue being discussed then there’s no doubt her outfit would be talked about in the media more than the issue itself!

The Euro royals provide plenty of glamour though, if we need a style fix, and there’s Cannes too.

Maireas · 23/05/2024 07:51

Yes, that picture of Emma (above) is from Cannes.

Beatrice B is also at Cannes in a Dior that’s simple but elegant. I do love a deep wine velvet.

There were some chairs and tables outside the tea tent but they were soaked so most people stood.

The tent was long and narrow with a servery along the whole back 'wall'. It was split into small sections and each section had a couple of staff. They served the drinks and gave you the little plate/tray thing. All the food was laid out for you to help yourself. There were various ledges and rails you could balance the plate on but no indoor/dry seating.

Lots of clearer uppers whisking away used crockery the moment you finished.

Sorry for not posting sooner last night was hectic getting home, collecting DC etc and I've just finished work.
You have to take your entry ticket and two forms of ID (one photo, one address). The gates open at 3, we had planned to use the back gate but were passing the main gate at about 2.30 so decided to go in that way. At that time they were already checking people in so we joined the queue. Once they had checked ID we were held in a queue until they opened the garden gate at 3. There was a massive tea tent for the majority and a royal tea tent that selected invitees could access.
These were seats scattered about (but not enough for 8000 people) but as it was tipping down they were soaked so almost no one sat down.
At 4 the band played the national anthem and the royals came out and headed to the royal tea tent.
Royal guards aka Beefeaters formed a cordon. If you were quick/switched on you could head over to the edge of this and after tea the royals wondered about chatting to people. But were lurking deep in the tea tent at the time as DH had just go soaked and was trying to dry off a bit so everyone was lined about 5 people deep so we couldn't see a thing. We had a stroll round the garden/lake, chatted to other guests, spoke a member of one of the military bands who had been on a training course with DH last year and decided to call it quits when we bumped into some DH knows who was looking after Bea and Eugenie and he was trying to introduce us but the princesses kept heading in the opposite direction to the one he was expecting to he didn't get the chance. (Which probably isn't a bad thing as DH has a tendency to protocol cockups). We left at about 5.15 as did loads of other people.
I imagine it's very different on a dry day when the view isn't blocked by a million umbrellas!

So many questions.

Was the food nice?
Did you manage to snaffle one of everything or were you limited to, say, 6 pieces? If so, how did you choose?

Runningupthecurtains · 23/05/2024 10:08

@NottsNora
There wasn't a limit (other than the pretty small plate which also held your cup) but some people had them stacked to the max. I initially chose a few savoury bits and four (I know) pieces of cake (they were tiny, the scone was about the size of a Victorian penny) where DH had chosen different bits was did a bit of tasting each others.
We then want for a walk in gardens and popped back into the tea tent for another cup of tea and snaffled a few more bits. I think between us we tried everything apart from the humus bagel and the apricot & lavender tart (I can't remember seeing them but they must have been there). Everything was delicious and looked really inviting too. The sandwich were small fingers but generously filled.

justasking111 · 23/05/2024 12:10

Did you take photographs while you were there?

angstridden2 · 23/05/2024 12:31

Went to BP a few years back.Weather not great but food dainty but delicious. I was amused that a pathway was cleared by the aides in morning suits almost without we mortals realising it for the royals to walk through. Also found the Royal Tea Tent entertaining, rather like Versailles watching the grandees eat at a safe distance. Had a really interesting day, Buck Palace gardens amazing.

A few of the gardens, and of DH (he found the spot he stood on in the rain for the coronation so he stood there in the rain again!) and the one of Beatrice that I posted on the day. It was so wet that I was constantly holding an umbrella so fewer pictures than I would have taken if my hands were free.

RockaLock · 23/05/2024 13:38

Here is my garden party food from a few years ago!

(I am sure that I didn't eat them all myself - DH must have eaten some Grin).

It looks like the cakes are the same but the savouries are slightly different.

Lovely colour on her and a well-fitting skirt but the top reminds me of a Victorian lampshade
