Is this nice or is it horrible? I think it’s nice but given it’s from per una (where fashion goes to die) I worry I’ve had a knock to the head

I think it's nice on the right person. I wouldn't wear it myself though.

ohlookimbackagain · 21/04/2024 08:35

I have several things from Per Una 🙈
That said I don’t really like that jacket - too bulky and fussy

You do know Moldavia is a made up country from Dynasty or were you being ironic?

Moldova is a country! Look it up

CactusBasket · 21/04/2024 09:12

It's Moldovan rather than Moldovian, maybe that's what Nigel meant? (Much as I like a bit of pedantry, though, I think we're off topic here)

LaWench · 21/04/2024 09:17

I nearly said Romanian instead of Moldovian 🫢

I'm not Nigel, I'm Nigel's (new) wife!

The model looks to be maybe a size 6 with very little boobage, and it looks okay ish. It would not flatter a curvy size 12 or 14.

So what should a size 12 or 14 be wearing to "flatter" them?

BrandNewBicep · 21/04/2024 17:40

I realise quilted jackets are having a moment, but certainly where I live, it is only older ladies (75+) that wear them and not in a particularly stylish way. I can't unsee that when I see these modern versions. I did see this one in store yesterday and it was OK (IMHO).

This is what you are likely to find on Etsy, Portobello Market, Camden Market etc ( for less money)
I think more flattering than the boxy westernised versions

Kantha Womenswear & Homeware

Kantha stitched coats, jackets and throws, all handmade using traditional techniques.

Personally I find that boxy shape unflattering as I am a quite busty 12.
I prefer a more tailored jacket, with a v shaped neck.

Some of the casually ageist comments on here are appalling. Do people really find old ladies and everything they do, say or wear intrinsically offensive? We’re all headed for old age from the day we’re born, if we’re ‘lucky’. No exemptions other than premature death. I sometimes think people would prefer anyone over the age of 59 to be shut away so their eyes wouldn’t have to be assaulted by the sight of the elderly, haplessly wearing their dowdy clothes in such an un-chic and completely styleless way. Ffs.

BrandNewBicep · 22/04/2024 08:14

I thought my comment may be taken in this way and couldn't think of a better way of phrasing it. As someone who is nearly 60 and hangs out with several people 75+ who do indeed look very stylish (I don't!), I am most definitely not slagging off older people. I am just pointing out that many, many older ladies wear these quilted jackets and in my opinion they look shapeless and not stylish and I associate them with an older demographic, so that is what I am reminded of when I see them in the shops and when younger people wear them.

I don't believe that women have a duty to look stylish at all times whatever their age. I'm all for anybody wearing what they damn well please. I'm quite certain people would look at me and think - 'ooh how frumpy'. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and this is Style and Beauty. But, I am most certainly not slagging off 75+ women.

ZaZathecat · 22/04/2024 08:45

I liked the look of the Asda one posted earlier so had a look on Vinted - wow they're being offered at around £45, 50% more than the full price in the shop!

Ok, apologies. My response to your post may have been slightly ott, but I do think I can be forgiven for reading
it is only older ladies (75+) that wear them and not in a particularly stylish way
and taking that as yet another generalised comment associating old age with frumpiness/dowdiness/lack of chic, etc. It’s the idea that if you see someone of a certain age wearing a garment, unless they resemble Audrey Hepburn, that type of garment will be forever tainted by the curse of the aged and never worn, even if you quite like it!

It would be unacceptable (I would hope, anyway) to say ‘I quite like this, but I saw an ugly woman wearing it yesterday, and can’t forget that image’. Why are age-related comments so casually bandied about?
Women, in particular, having had a lifetime of being judged by others for their style and beauty, or lack of it, are on a hiding to nothing as they get old.

BrandNewBicep · 22/04/2024 10:46

Apology accepted and I will be much more mindful of my phrasing in the future.

I don't think your response was OTT. Or that you needed to apologise.

What would you put on your other foot?

😂

I love it. Pair with wide leg jeans, a brightly colored trainer. It would look amazing.

Just the one trainer? A snipers nightmare!

Ruthietuthie · 22/04/2024 16:26

@crinkletits, just the one. A high fashion look always has that one element of surprise.

sleeppleasesoon · 23/04/2024 19:56

OMG I love that jacket. Such a shame it’s sold out in my size. The ties at the front make it look really modern and the pattern is so nice.

Onetiredbeing · 23/04/2024 21:52

This reminds me of something in my home country- bedding and quilts are very much like this. I can't imagine wearing this and not feeling like I'm walking around in PJ's. I've seen this style around and think the audacity to make bedding into a fashion item 😀

Julimia · 24/04/2024 20:04

In your opinion. In my opinion its old fashioned and frumpy whatever name it has on its label. Each to their own comes to mind here.

1yearplan · 24/04/2024 20:07

I really like it
