Ok, apologies. My response to your post may have been slightly ott, but I do think I can be forgiven for reading
it is only older ladies (75+) that wear them and not in a particularly stylish way
and taking that as yet another generalised comment associating old age with frumpiness/dowdiness/lack of chic, etc. It’s the idea that if you see someone of a certain age wearing a garment, unless they resemble Audrey Hepburn, that type of garment will be forever tainted by the curse of the aged and never worn, even if you quite like it!
It would be unacceptable (I would hope, anyway) to say ‘I quite like this, but I saw an ugly woman wearing it yesterday, and can’t forget that image’. Why are age-related comments so casually bandied about?
Women, in particular, having had a lifetime of being judged by others for their style and beauty, or lack of it, are on a hiding to nothing as they get old.
