Is this nice or is it horrible? I think it’s nice but given it’s from per una (where fashion goes to die) I worry I’ve had a knock to the head

Pure Cotton Embroidered Short Jacket | Per Una | M&S

This pure cotton jacket from our Per Una collection is a lightweight and versatile layer. It's cut in a regular fit with a contemporary short length and striking embroidery. The collarless design is fastened with toggle-style buttons for a distinctive...

OP posts:

I don’t give a fig about appearing cool on an anonymous forum.

I despise Per Una. It has assaulted my eyes for decades.

I am over 60.

It’s not. It’s cos most of it is awful

No, style and taste is subjective. Being derogatory about older people is ageism.

PuppyMonkey · 20/04/2024 07:41

I think it’s horrible, as is your snarkiness about Per Una.

You realise that we all have different tastes, right?

No, style and taste is subjective. Being derogatory about older people is ageism.

But what’s it got to do with older people if a brand is awful? Are you suggesting us older people like awful clothes? 😉

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 20/04/2024 07:45

It’s not my style but if you like it go for it.

KateDelRick · 20/04/2024 05:54

What would you put on your other foot?

Mr Magnolia's boot?

Read my posts. I am suggesting nothing.
I am saying that the barbs against older people not being stylish are ageist.

nc22124 · 20/04/2024 07:51

In my opinion M&S is great for staples - shirts, jumpers, work trousers, etc. - but when they try and do anything 'quirky' or 'trendy' they tend to get it a bit wrong, and Per Una sort of epitomises this. I don't think it's really an age thing tbh.

This jacket is not my style but it's not horrible. I do like the colour scheme for spring/summer - you could probably get quite a lot of wear out of it.

cansu · 20/04/2024 07:51

I have seen some hideous things on here gushed over because the brand is hush or some other so called cool brand. If you like it then it should be irrelevant whether it is per una.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 20/04/2024 07:52

But I am curious about how @ItSucksSo was able to identify the jacket wearer’s age so specifically. Seventy two?

Or was it someone you knew?

Good point. Ignore labels. If you like it and it suits you, go for it.
whatever your age

Librarybooker · 20/04/2024 07:56

Per Una is the right M&S label for it. I can remember when they first started Per Una and the collection was all about embellishments and boho vibe. M&S these days seems to be a quite acceptable place to shop for stylish stuff as well as classic staples. I like their jeans, especially wide leg ones but some things remain the same - their t shirts and jumpers have always been too short in body or sleeve for me - tall since 1973 😂

Maybeicanhelpyou · 20/04/2024 07:57

@Namerchanger1
Theres very similar stuff at quite a high end boutique called ‘ Feather and Stitch’ in Richmond. They have an on line shop, have a look!

Gatekeeper · 20/04/2024 08:11

Not keen..not becuase its Per Una but proportions are odd. Makes the model look very short bodied and slightly skewiff

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 20/04/2024 08:18

ASighMadeOfStone · 20/04/2024 07:33

Agreed.
But it's a trendy brand dontcha know so the ageists on MN can't diss it while mocking anyone over the age of 35.

It's time MN did something about the fucking constant ageism on here, it's exhausting.

(I don't own anything from Per Una- the jacket is awful )

Edited

The Wyse one was in the list of 5 I posted. I wasn't commenting on any of them beyond making the point these jackets are a big thing at the moment. And brands like Wyse and Brora are doing them, and indeed Asda. And none of the 5, to my eyes, locked significantly nicer or nastier than the Per Una one.

I'm not hugely taken by any of the ones I linked to, or the Per Una one either.

Rocknrollstar · 20/04/2024 08:34

I love it but I bought a quilted jacket from M n S years ago in blue and it was like cardboard and very uncomfortable to wear.

TenThousandSpoons · 20/04/2024 08:38

OnHerSolidFoundations · 20/04/2024 05:40

Clothkits 🌈🌻

Yes I was thinking it reminds me of a clothkits jacket my mum made me

LlynTegid · 20/04/2024 08:40

I think for some women it would suit, and just because it is from a retailer you usually avoid should make no difference. I think it depends on things such as your hair colour and skin complexion as to whether it would look good on you.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 20/04/2024 08:42

I thought the alternatives provided by @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle were useful.

I don’t like them. Some of my favourite brands stock one or two, but I’m not convinced. Frankly, if Gabriela Hearst herself sat over a sewing machine and fashioned one with her own hands and offered it to me as a gift - I’d hang it on the wall.

MuscariFan · 20/04/2024 08:43

You might like this Quilted Jackets post to give you some other options for this kind of thing, @Namerchanger1.

(I like the one in the OP, but the colour would be awful on me.)

The message from this thread is to wear whatever you like, except if you’re old and, crucially, not chic, in which case whatever you wear blights it for others, so you are being selfish and should opt for sackcloth. The chic-o-meter awaits!

mitogoshi · 20/04/2024 08:50

Like so many current trends, it looks lovely on the tall very slim young model, on someone a few years older, shorter and not so slim it could easily look like wearing your grans jacket from yesteryear, though this has slightly more eastern vibes than the boxy jackets from before. The only way you can really tell is trying it on. Definitely would not suit a larger chest though

CortieTat · 20/04/2024 08:54

I love it! And I’m not a fan of quilted jackets. I’m on a self-imposed buying ban and already thinking how to go around it for this one 😅.

It’s boxy and I look good in boxy tops and jackets.

It's nope from me, it's giving me Moldovian traditional folk dress vibes.

This is exactly why I like it!
