As the title says. Give or take 10% either way. Looking for a really nice new luxury bag and in need of suggestions.

I’m not anti luxury bags at all but these days I very rarely carry any sort of bag at all. They just seem so dated to me. I really can’t see the point.

Luxury shoes I can get behind, but not bags.

AlltheFs · 19/03/2024 16:43

Ps I also have a pony. They are even more pointless than handbags (I mean I love mine to bits but she’s an absolute liability). I could’ve bought every bag ever made with her vet fees.

Who needs a bag worth that much money? Surely you could get a £30 bag that would do just a good a job of holding stuff.

I'm guessing that the retailer of such an expensive bag is laughing all the way to the bank!

I think my ex has joined the thread - he was an expert at sucking the joy from anything. And anyway, the chances are that the £30 bag has been made in a sweat shop, whereas the £1,500 has been made by skilled, well paid artisans.

RitaIncognita · 19/03/2024 16:50

I think it is because many women view handbags as a practical item rather than a fashion accessory, and are quite baffled at the idea of paying 10 x the price of something that does the job equally well.

True, but besides being a fashion accessory, many people who love handbags (and I am one) view the really good ones as fine works of craftsmanship, or even art. And art that you can look at, but also hold in your hands and wear wherever and whenever your heart desires. I understand that many people don't get this, but I don't get the notion of spending lots of money on cars. I have a few really lovely and expensive handbags that I transport with me in my old beater of a car.

Same ! I currently drive a 20 year old battered van 😫

And I find it quite amusing that I drive around said van with handbags worth more than it slung on the passenger seat

None- a holiday instead.

I do believe anyone spending that much on a bag, has 'issues'.

Floisme · 19/03/2024 17:04

I do hope none of these holidays are long haul - not very virtuous if they are.

hairbearbunches · 19/03/2024 17:11

Doesn't sound like you're looking for a luxury bag, you're looking for a branded bag. If you're happy paying through the nose for a brand name, fill your boots, but you could get a luxury non branded bag from Italy that would garner many compliments because it's a luxury bag, well made by artisans using top grade leather. Would still be pricey, but not £1500 pricey.

I've got experience in the luxury bag market. The quality of some of the leather used by the big fashion houses does not warrant their finished price tags. You pays yer money, you takes yer choice. But you either want a luxury bag and are all about the quality, or you want to make the likes of Bernard Arnault even richer than he already is.

whitenoisemachine · 19/03/2024 17:12

@Molecule 😂 😂 I just spat my tea out laughing at your comment.

@fleurneige care to elaborate on what issues I must have? Further, I shall enjoy wearing my new handbag on my long haul holiday later this year.

Some of the comments on this post are bizarre. You'd think I was hiring a hitman, not buying a sodding bag.

What issues would you say that someone spending their own money, on something they like, in a way that harms absolutely no one, has?

ohdamnitjanet · 19/03/2024 17:22

An Iceland carrier bag.

In orange. I have nothing to go with it and it’s too small. But I love it.

Love puzzle bags. I've seen one in yellow but like you have nothing to wear with it. May be sensible and get a tan at some point.

ShirleyPhallus · 19/03/2024 17:28

Jennywren2000 · 19/03/2024 15:25

Surely to those confused about it, it’s just the same as buying an expensive car: an unfashionable, cheap car would get you from A to B in just the same way but some people buy more shiny, expensive ones.

It’s just choices. I haven’t ever tried particularly wanted a designer handbag, but I still understand why some people like them.

Some people spend lots on special plants for their gardens, special food etc.

If I was going to get a very expensive bag it would be one from The Row. But they are more than the 1.5k and mostly sold out.

It’s a very specific thing to make women feel bad about spending money on themselves. No one makes a man feel bad about spending £1500 on a bike or tells him he should give the money to charity or buy a £50 second hand bike because it’ll do the job just as well.

somehow women are made to feel bad on spending their own money on themselves instead of spending it on their family or on a holiday which is baffling.

This always happens on the handbag thread. It seems to attract Puritans.

Why Iceland?.

I'd go for a £50 bag and an amazing holiday.

No one cares what bag you've got and if I see LV bags ( or whatever designer bag ) I'd immediately think 'fake.'

YOU don't care but clearly the OP does. Seriously why comment just to say 'don't'. That's not what the OP is asking.
Some people would say spending money on a holiday is stupid as it's over in a week. At least a bag can last years.

Ifulikepinacoladas · 19/03/2024 17:33

You would think Mumsnet could do something about the predictable comments on threads like this. It literally happens every time and it's so tedious.

The posters derailing with their 'get a cheap bag and a holiday blah blah' shit always assume it's an either or situation. People have different lifestyles/ incomes/ interests, get over it.

Yes it's a forum where anyone can post on anything, but surely in Style and Beauty it should be helpful to the OP. Do any of these posters actually think that an OP might actually go 'hang on, I never thought of that. An H&M bag for me it is, and then the rest on a holiday?!' What's the point?

EmpressOfTheThread · 19/03/2024 17:37

@Ifulikepinacoladas - it's so predictable. How many on here have said that a holiday is better than a handbag? Or a carrier bag instead of the luxury bag? Always the same. Although the park bench one was hilarious and so far not been suggested on here!

I keep thinking of getting a cream or grey one, but I wouldn’t love it as much 🧡. Let’s just buy coordinating shoes and get the fancy bag.

Why is it better to spend money on a holiday than on a handbag?.

It is, for me. We are all different. The sort of holiday I take are such amazing experiences, and leave a life-time of superb discoveries, in so so many ways. A hand-bag? Nope.

I cannot for the life of me, imagine spending that much on a handbag- ever.

FluffyFanny · 19/03/2024 17:46

Why are so many posts on Style and Beauty threads by people not interested in fashion? It's weird!
If you're the sort of person who views your bag as just something to put stuff in and don't care what it looks like and prefer to spend all your money on holidays instead then don't post on fashion threads!
