Do you still use a wallet?

I haven’t used a proper wallet in years, I just carry a tiny card holder for debit card + a couple of supermarket cards and pay pretty much everywhere with my phone these days.
Curious to know if people still use a traditional wallet (with the zip and compartments etc) these days. If you do, what is your age? When I go shopping I notice it’s mainly “mature” people using one.
I do miss it but just don’t see the point anymore!

Yes, I have a purse.

JustOneFootInFrontOfTheOther · 06/03/2024 07:05

I’m 50. I rarely have or use cash. I have never paid by Apple Pay but do use my debit cards for everything. I carry a purse, rather than wallet, it has the zip bit and a large slot that all my cards are stuffed in together, no individual slots.
I guess I’m ‘mature’.

What’s the difference between a purse and a wallet?

Taylormiffed · 06/03/2024 07:06

Yes. I'm 49. I always carry cash as I find it easier to budget.

Tisfortired · 06/03/2024 07:06

Yes, I have a Vivienne Westwood purse DP got me for my 21st birthday. Only a handful were made and he travelled to the other end of the country to collect it so it has sentimental value! It’s 12 years old and despite being almost pick pocketed a few times it’s still in great condition.

I think if I didn’t have my specific purse though I wouldn’t bother, although I do carry it around with me I mainly just use Apple Pay on my phone.

A wallet is what a man uses

TashieWoo · 06/03/2024 07:07

I have one but I don’t take it out with me regularly, only when I need cash which isn’t very often. I have all the cards I need on my phone, so my debit card and things like M&S sparks card.

Fetchthevet · 06/03/2024 07:07

52 and use a purse. Sometimes still use cash so I need a purse.

EndlesslyDistracted · 06/03/2024 07:08

I switched to a tiny card holder and a tiny coin purse several years ago when I started putting all my cards on my phone and using less cash. But the card holder is so light I worry about pulling it out of my bag accidentally with something else and dropping it. Last week I found my old style wallet still in great condition so I thought I'd switch back for a change but it seems so bulky in my bag so it's going again.

I ditched my purse at the end of last year - I never carried cash and it was a waste of space. I now have a lovely little leather card holder with a small zipped compartment for some coins. Works perfectly!

newrubylane · 06/03/2024 07:11

I just switched to a small card holder with a zippy bit that can hold a couple of coins and it's perfect. My old phone case had a double card pocket and I used to keep them in there which was handy, but since I changed phones I had been carrying my cards around loose and kept almost losing them. The wallet is much better.

EndlesslyDistracted · 06/03/2024 07:11

I should add that you won't generally see me getting out either wallet, coin purse or cardholder in a shop as I use Apple pay for just about everything. I'm mid 50s. Cash is mainly only used for our weekly pub quiz and cardholder is just in case my apple pay declines.

WeRateSquirrels · 06/03/2024 09:50

52 and have a wallet but don't use it. Use Apple pay for everything, don't even carry cards around.

Revelatio · 06/03/2024 09:51

No, I don’t use a wallet at all now I don’t even carry a bag. I use Apple Pay.

RoseAndRose · 06/03/2024 09:53

I've never used a wallet

But still have a purse, because I still carry coins as well as notes (receipts, lottery tickets and some other random crap)

I've never understood how people with wallets manage coins (safety pins, hair ties, small broken things etc). I expect they're more associated with men because men wore suits/jackets with much better pockets

A wallet is what a man uses

I used a wallet as a woman for years.

Precipice · 06/03/2024 09:54

I have a wallet, but it has a snap rather than a zip. I don't think I've ever had one with a zip. I pay almost entirely in cash for in-person purchases. I've never once used my phone to pay, unless you count having to authenticate online purchases. Mid 20s.

ilovecherries · 06/03/2024 09:59

Last time I used a purse was the week before lockdown. I have a teeny leather card holder that takes three cards and an emergency £20 note. All loyalty cards etc are now on my phone. I actually can’t remember the last time I used cash. I’m mature by most people’s standards.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/03/2024 09:59

I’m 60. I never use a purse.

I’m irritated by the fact some cards can’t be put in digital wallet. E.g national trust.

I’m also irritated by retailers that need you to input card details online. If it’s not got Apple Pay, PayPal or Klarna l don’t bother with it.

I have my cards in a purse somewhere. But l can never find it. I never ever use cash.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/03/2024 10:06

I have a little purse/card thing from Oliver Bonas but generally use ApplePay. Pre lockdown I had a beautiful Orla Kiely fox print wallet with leather trim that DP got me one birthday and lasted for years - I loved it so much but do wonder why I carried something so bulky!

bingoringo4 · 06/03/2024 10:08

Yes I use a purse because I use cash for everything.

mondaytosunday · 06/03/2024 10:11

Nope. My phone case has room for credit/debit cards and paper money (which I rarely use). I'm always caught out at supermarkets that make you put a pound in the trolleys.
I only want to take what I can put in my pockets. Only time I take a bag - small crossbody - is when I have to take my insulin either me.

TheOGCCL · 06/03/2024 10:16

I've not used a proper purse or wallet for years. I have a card holder with my debit/credit cards which I take out just as back up because occasionally my Google pay doesn't seem to work eg on the bus. Over time I reach for the card wallet less and less. I do not use cash. I'm 48.

WasntExpectingSunshine · 06/03/2024 10:17

No, I just have my phone with me mostly. I sometimes carry a card or a note in the phone case as well but rarely.
