Do you still use a wallet?

I haven’t used a proper wallet in years, I just carry a tiny card holder for debit card + a couple of supermarket cards and pay pretty much everywhere with my phone these days.
Curious to know if people still use a traditional wallet (with the zip and compartments etc) these days. If you do, what is your age? When I go shopping I notice it’s mainly “mature” people using one.
I do miss it but just don’t see the point anymore!

I ditched my big purse when it dawned on me that I only actually used the things that fitted into my “party purse” (card holder with tiny zipped bit for cash.) Never looked back. My big purse sits permanently in my study and is where I keep things like guarantees and Timpsons lifetime battery cards. It’s so freeing! I can either use a tiny bag, or carry important things like sunglasses, proper glasses, hairbrush, water bottle…

I now use one of those metal card holders where can you push up the card you need at the time. Any cash I use I keep in a small plastic popper wallet in a compartment in my handbag.

I need to carry stuff around with me so couldn't go without a bag. I use a small cross body bag for essentials and a backpack to carry my small laptop and lunch etc for work. When I don't need to carry as much I have s smaller backpack.

I'm fascinated by PPs saying they never use cash now - what do you do if you go somewhere & they only take cash?

I don't carry cash or use a purse/wallet. If I'm going somewhere I know needs cash, I'll bring some from home specially (in my pocket). If it's a surprise because card machine down or something, I'd go to an atm if nearby and get cash out using my phone. Or I wouldn't buy that thing and I'd go elsewhere.

I haven’t used my wallet for a few years now.

I use Apple Pay for everything and no longer carry any cards with me. I never use cash.

StarlightLady · 07/03/2024 06:12

I have a cardholder in my handbag and an “emergency £10 note” and 5 X £1 coins in a zipped inner pocket. My purse was retired during the pandemic. I hardly use cash at all anymore.

IloveAslan · 07/03/2024 08:00

I use a wallet all the time, and plan to do so forever - I'm 64. I don't pay for anything by phone and rarely have any cash.

I'm far more likely to leave my phone at home than my wallet!

GreenTuftyFlowers · 07/03/2024 10:42

Card holder AND purse (though could probably get away with a much smaller purse). There's always a potential need for cash - supermarket trolleys, parking, paying for drinks when the event card payment system goes down...

I'd hate to rely on my phone for everything - what if it falls down the toilet / gets nicked / runs out of battery - you're stuffed.

Zephyry · 07/03/2024 10:45

Yes I have a purse with debit and credit cards, nectar card, driving license etc. Don't often have cash in it these days. I find it better to have a chunkier thing as less likely to lose it!

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 07/03/2024 10:47

I have a small slimline MagSafe wallet that attaches to the back of my phone. Driving license, 2 cards and an entry/membership card.

It also acts as a phone stand so 2 for 1.

Midnightrunners · 07/03/2024 10:48

I keep everything in a Pocket Time Manager.

Sanch1 · 07/03/2024 10:50

I have a purse with my cards in but only ever use my phone or watch. Never take it unless I specifically need a card to get cash or something.

museumum · 07/03/2024 10:50

I use a small purse not much bigger than a card holder. It takes cards, some business cards and an emergency medication I carry (but don’t often have to use) and can take notes (folded) and a few coins.

museumum · 07/03/2024 10:52

do People who use phone only not carry their drivers licence? I’m faaaar too old to be IDd but still feel I ought to carry it.

I’m 60. I never use a purse.

I’m irritated by the fact some cards can’t be put in digital wallet. E.g national trust.

I’m also irritated by retailers that need you to input card details online. If it’s not got Apple Pay, PayPal or Klarna l don’t bother with it.

I have my cards in a purse somewhere. But l can never find it. I never ever use cash.

National Trust seem to have stopped asking for the card and just check your address on their database, so one less card to carry.

Also 60 and just use a cardholder and phone for payment.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/03/2024 11:06

You need the national trust card for their carparks.

EndlesslyDistracted · 07/03/2024 11:15

Yes, I find the National Trust thing annoying as I use one of their car parks frequently. I know you don’t HAVE to pay, but they get more funding if you do so it seems short-sighted to not have a card that can be stored on an app. I have taken a photo of mine and keep it in its own folder in my photos app but its not ideal.

museumum · 07/03/2024 11:42

Can you not leave the National Trust card in the car glove compartment if you only / mainly use it for parking?

DanceToThisBeatForevermore · 07/03/2024 11:45

I use my phone for almost all payments now, and have my store cards on there, but I still carry a wee coin purse around with a tenner, some change and my cards + ID. Rarely used but I’d feel an idiot if my phone died and I had no cards/cash as backup!

suki1964 · 07/03/2024 11:54

I stopped using a hand bag years ago so the purse went the same time. I now use a cross body phone purse which also has a wrist /arm band which I use if needing something bigger then a pocket. I can fit a phone, cards, cash, vape, fluids and a fold up shopper in it

Pushtart · 07/03/2024 11:57

I use a purse too, for change and maybe a note or two, but I mostly use apple pay so I don't need a big wallet anymore.

I guess so, although it would probably get lost or slip down the back unless we put it in some sort of wallet. Goes against all my instincts to leave a wallet or cards in a car! I do use it for house entrances too but as others have said, they can look you up on the computer if you've left it in the car by mistake.

CointreauVersial · 07/03/2024 12:07

Yes, I cart around a fairly big wallet/purse. I have:
Credit cards (2),
Debit cards (2),
Various store loyalty cards, Waitrose, Nectar, Sparks, Costco etc (18 !!),
Coupons, giftcards, vouchers (loads),

Library card
NT card
Driving licence
Office keycard
and just a small amount of cash, which isn't used too much nowadays.

I realise this makes me a bit of a fossil, as I don't use my phone for any of this, but I regularly forget to pick up my phone when I go out, and I always have my handbag (hence wallet).

CointreauVersial · 07/03/2024 12:09

And I realise I don't need all of these cards day to day, but if I leave them at home and just take what I think I need that day I'll be forever chopping and changing (or finding out I don't have the right card on me).

TheChosenTwo · 07/03/2024 12:30

I haven’t used a purse/wallet for years, have a tiny card holder but I don’t even take that out really anymore, everything on my phone.
Also the only time I take a bag anywhere now day to day is my one office day because I need my laptop. I’ve streamlined considerably!

henlake7 · 07/03/2024 13:15

All these people going out without bags! shudder
I have to take a bag, even if its just a tiny cross body phone bag. If I didnt I would have a feeling of something being wrong the whole time I was out....like Id left my kids in the pub!!LOL😆
