Do you still use a wallet?

I haven’t used a proper wallet in years, I just carry a tiny card holder for debit card + a couple of supermarket cards and pay pretty much everywhere with my phone these days.
Curious to know if people still use a traditional wallet (with the zip and compartments etc) these days. If you do, what is your age? When I go shopping I notice it’s mainly “mature” people using one.
I do miss it but just don’t see the point anymore!

What’s the difference between a purse and a wallet?

Are you American. I think they say purse when Uk say bag and they say wallet when Uk say purse, if that makes sense.

I'm 69 and haven't used a purse for years. I have debit and credit card on my phone and a cc in my Freedom Pass holder, and usually a £10/£20 in my bag as a contingency. I rarely use cash.

And us ‘older types’ are the ones that still use purses..

I don’t even know where my purse is

SpringOfContentment · 06/03/2024 10:44

Yep.
I have:
Cash
Debt card
Credit card
Tesco card
Sainsburys card
Driving license
Library card for me plus each kid
Stamps

Never bought anything on my phone.

I got a new one for Christmas, a really tiny one. It is just a bit bigger than a card holder with a small zipped area. I have a few coins in it and my trolley coin, stamps, notes and cards.

I almost exclusively use my phone but occasionally need the cards. It lives in my work bag most of the time.

Growlybear83 · 06/03/2024 10:57

I still use a purse all the time. I go to a lot of collectibles fairs, and most stakeholders prefer cash payment rather than card, so I always have about £40 in cash in my purse. I also carry all my debit and credit cards, and my different loyalty cards, membership cards, coupons, stamps etc. I never use Apple Pay to buy things when I'm out and often don't have my phone with me anyway if I'm only out for a short time.

APurpleSquirrel · 06/03/2024 11:03

I'm 44 - I have a purse which has lots of cards, cash, vouchers, loyalty cards, stamps etc in it.
I use my phone to pay for most things, but like having cash when needed.
I'm fascinated by PPs saying they never use cash now - what do you do if you go somewhere & they only take cash? Either because that's the norm (car boot, fete, fair etc) or because the card machine is out?

What’s the difference between a purse and a wallet?

Men use wallets and women purses. Wallets tend to be flatter.

Longlive · 06/03/2024 11:10

Can't remember the last time I used cash, definitely before lockdown, so have no need for a purse.

I have a a Pia leather bag that has two compartments and a middle zipped bit. The compartments have card holders so cards go in one side phone in the other side.

I pay everything by phone.

I'm obviously 'mature' and probably 'frumpy' as I have a purse which I carry in my handbag (along with a first aid kit, a fold up shopping bag and my reliever inhaler). I have some notes, coins, cards, copy of the car insurance and driving licence in my purse. I don't use my phone to pay for anything.

Jeannne92 · 06/03/2024 11:17

I have one of my credit cards on my phone and a lot of the time this is fine so I will just go out with that and my travelcard.

When going to work, or shopping or anywhere further afield, I take a little cardholder with my health card (for pharmacy and medical appointments - I have a lot) and my 2 physical credit cards plus usually around 60-80 Euros in cash and a couple of coins, plus a luncheon voucher type card from work that I can use to buy bread and food at the market or supermarket, coffees.

I haven't had a wallet bigger than a cardholder for years but I've never been a big purse person (perhaps down to the trend for teeny tiny handbags when I was a young woman?)

MinnieCauldwell · 06/03/2024 11:22

Late 60s and only carry a phone, have all my debit, credit and loyalty cards on it. Love paying this way and not having to carry a vag and fumble for my purse.

MinnieCauldwell · 06/03/2024 11:22

Bag not vag obviously....

TheLeadbetterLife · 06/03/2024 11:23

Where I live many places still only take cash, and cards would be frowned upon for a 1€ coffee, so I have a small man's wallet with a built-in coin purse. Most of the time I use Apple Pay though. I hardly ever carry a bag - nothing to put in it.

AtomicBlondeRose · 06/03/2024 11:25

I hope nobody’s fumbling around in a vag for a purse!

I still use a purse. I have DC at primary school and cash is very much present in our lives in the form of £1 and 50p coins mostly. But I do also use cash other times. DP often gets paid in cash so we do have some knocking around and I take £20 every month or so which does get used up here and there.

Pacifybull · 06/03/2024 11:25

I use a small clear plastic zipped bag as a purse.

Helpel · 06/03/2024 11:26

I have a beautiful Aspinal wallet/purse that my husband bought for my 40th. In just the last few years I've gone from taking it out regularly to hardly ever, as i now have all my cards (including loyalty and points) on my phone. A shame really as i love it, but it has been rendered virtually useless.

DinosaurOfFire · 06/03/2024 11:33

Im late 30s and have a variety of purses I switch around depending on my mood/ the season -I have a christmas purse, spring/ aautumn, a smaller summer one as I'm more likely to be using a backpack or a small cross body bag, I have fancy purses and casual purses, and some of them have bags to match! (All collected over the last 10-15 years). I don't pay on my phone ever, I prefer my debit card or cash.

idontlikealdi · 06/03/2024 13:48

I have a very small purse that lives in the bottom of my bag in case my phone dies or network issues.

I used to have a ridiculously large Radley wallet back when they were actually trendy in about 2000

jay55 · 06/03/2024 13:51

Card holder.

Unless I'm on holiday and then I use money and take a change purse.

Jojoanna · 06/03/2024 14:00

I use a card holder

henlake7 · 06/03/2024 15:49

50 and have a purse stuffed with so much junk (probably still a Blockbusters card in there somewhere!).
For some reason though Im very minimalist at home and yet feel the need to carry a ton of useless junk around with me.... 'just in case'.🙄

erlangshen · 06/03/2024 15:53

yes always, large wallet with cards, vouchers, coins, notes and paracetamol😊

Isabelle70 · 06/03/2024 17:46

I have a smaller purse now than I used to as very little cash is carried. I don't use Apple-pay as I like to use my cards. I also use a handbag to keep my purse and phone in and I love a handbag as well :) 53 young here.

dudsville · 06/03/2024 17:58

I don't pay for anything by phone I only use cards. I have a card sized purse/wallet, it zips and can hold a lip balm, a tissue and my keys.
