Who still wears heels?

Saw a woman in heels at lunchtime, in the queue for sandwiches, and just thought, can't remember the last time I saw someone in heels at work. To be fair I work in Government and we are a fairly scruffy bunch. But even on a night out it mostly seems to be trainers or flats.

I do think they have a practical use for shorter women working with men. If I'm standing up in a group talking with my colleagues then the conversation quite literally goes over my head. Three additional inches of height brings me slightly closer to the action.

Wear heels or don’t wear heels, whatever you like.

But don’t show your fashion ignorance by saying they’re dated or old fashioned or sneer at people who admit to wearing them.

To quote Cosmopolitan last month “no matter if you're into a more comfy aesthetic or sky-high heels, trend forecasting is v important to remain in the know and discover which designs best suit your exact vibes.”

Meanwhile in real life....

Mary Jane’s with a slight heel seem to be all over the place now. (Although not sure if those are ‘heels’ for the purposes of this thread).

This is true - I have a small colleague who will never be parted from a 3 inch uplift, and there are many who feel the same.

I saw a lady in town wearing heels yesterday. I was quite surprised as she was long past working age and was toddling (quite happily) along with a pull-along shopping trolley bag.

The only other time I see heels is on Royal women. The new Queen Mary of Denmark even out-heels the Princess of Wales! And I'll never forget them all struggling after Prince Philip's funeral.

I suited heels myself and used to walk all over in them but comfort and safety are my priorities thee days.

I AM intrigued by Royals and heels.

Is it so they are taller in a crowd?

Is it that their heels are very expensive so actually comfortable?

Is it a uniform that gives them confidence?

I think the PoW walks well in heels.

Bringtheweatherwithyou · 05/03/2024 09:04

Havent RTFT but I saw a woman wearing heels a few weeks ago and did a double take. .

Twenty years ago, when I was in my twenties myself, people were required to wear suits and ‘smart’ clothes to the office. The problem is we weren’t paid enough to buy nice clothes so we usually ended up with multiple pairs of black wide leg trousers from TopShop or River Island and a shirt style too. Others bought very cheap, badly fitted suits from Next. We thought we looked smart although even then those who bought the cheap, badly fitted suits from Next stood out as looking ‘old fashioned’.

High heels look like the old fashioned Next suits of today.

You have awful feet ect guess your just a little envious of the ppl who wear pretty heels that have pretty feet and nice legs

Er...no I'm not. And who said anything about my legs? My legs are great. But thanks for asking.

Highlighta · 05/03/2024 09:32

I have found this thread quite interesting, and I have to wonder how many posters on the thread live outside of the UK. As countries in the rest of the world, heels are still being worn. I would hardly do a double take seeing heels being worn, some people on this thread are making out they are some rare sighting these days and tutting about seeing an older person wearing a pair.

As for being old fashioned, and saying PoW is wearing outdated clothing. She is wearing smart clothing with the footwear that suits the clothing style. I doubt that she would look quite so polished if she came out with her designer outfits and sporting New Balance trainers.

I get that some people just cannot wear heels, but then again some people can. So why are they being slated on here for their clothing choice? Saying those same people must be sporting a fake tan or fake eyelashes is the most horrid comment. Some people are just so narrow minded at times, its is just ridiculous.

It seems like if someone goes against what is fashionable right now, they get such hard time on here. The whole world doesn't follow what is being worn on the streets of London.... but it seems that fashion choices have such on hold on people, and dare you to stray from it. You get called all sorts for it. Some people need to widen their horizons a little bit I am afraid and stop being such fashion victims.

Bringtheweatherwithyou · 05/03/2024 10:00

Some people need to widen their horizons a little bit I am afraid and stop being such fashion victims.

The issue is that heels were supposedly ‘fashion’. Therefore the ones wearing the heels were/are the victims.
When men start tottering around with sticks glued onto their shoes to give them height/elongate their legs/be the same height as others- your post might make sense. As it stands going by your own statement, you are the victim.

NoFunNoFrills · 05/03/2024 11:00

I was in Spain last week, and in the evening there was a woman (late 30s- early 40s), who looked fab in a great pair of jeans, high heels, long coat and simple top. She was on a date with her bloke. She looked so stylish with her short bob haircut and simple makeup, it made me with I was wearing heels instead of birkenstock.

zaxxon · 05/03/2024 11:43

Those are fab sandals @CertainUncertain - especially the green ones 💚

RampantIvy · 05/03/2024 12:25

As are the fashion police who often post in S & B to state that heels are in/out, skinnies are in/out, midi dresses are in/out, camel coats are in/out etc etc, and anyone who isn't dressed in the height of fashion is frumpy (I hate that word).

BigWillyLittleTodger · 05/03/2024 13:19

SuperstarDeejay · 05/03/2024 00:17

Celebrities are another species though. I'm not going to red carpet events or being papped.

I'd look just as ridiculous (and not 'on trend') going about my everyday life in Louboutin stilettoes as I would in a bespoke $10,000 gown or with a nose job and half a kilo of filler in my face.

It’s not a stark choice of flat shoes or Louboutin Stilettos though, when anyone mentions heels they automatically assume the extreme variety, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone wandering around Tesco in Louboutin stilletoes, but a block heel, a wedge heel, cone heel, yep any everyday occurrence, particularly in winter when a block heeled boot seem to be particularly popular. Heels don’t automatically always mean stilettos.

Lostsadandconfused · 05/03/2024 13:21

Yes, I still wear them regularly. But block heels or wedges, not stilettos.

Some of my girlfriends and work colleagues always wear flats and I don’t care whats on their feet.

Heels are still fashionable here in Australia, but it seems to be whatever goes with your outfit and makes you feel good, rather than a judgement either way.

Frumpy is completely meaningless. It just means

"I don't like this, but my saying I don't like this carries no more weight than someone else saying I really like this, but if I say it's"frumpy" it turns my subjective opinion into something objective"

It doesn't.

And it's not limited to being thrown out at anything which isn't the height of fashion. Oten it's chucked at designers who are non mainstream/ a bit out there and often are at fashion heights.

Seasalt ( no offence intended, they do nice dresses) and say Casey Casey are equally likely to be cursed as "frumpy"

BillaKat · 05/03/2024 14:28

I hate heels. Never wear them.

HideTheCroissants · 05/03/2024 16:44

I’ve had a clear out of my wardrobes this afternoon.

I have “audited” my “regular” footwear. Courtshoes with 3 inch heals, 5 pairs in different colours. 2.5 inch heals with strap, 4 pairs in different colours. Heeled lace up shoes (2.5 - 3 inch heels) two pairs in 2 colours. Black t bar with 4 inch heel. These are all worn for work. I also have heeled boots, heeled sandals and heeled “going out” shoes as well as trainers, walking boots, canvas pumps and flip flops.

I know it’s an awful lot of shoes but when I find a pair I like and find comfy I buy them in ALL the colours!

If I’m not in heels at work people really notice because of my (lack of) height.

There is a MASSIVE difference between Australian and European fashion/style.

I don't understand why anyone posting in S&B would encourage anyone to follow the fashions. Style has very little to do with fashion. If the current fashions don't suit your body, you won't look stylish in them.
