Who still wears heels?

Saw a woman in heels at lunchtime, in the queue for sandwiches, and just thought, can't remember the last time I saw someone in heels at work. To be fair I work in Government and we are a fairly scruffy bunch. But even on a night out it mostly seems to be trainers or flats.

I often read/hear people saying that hardly anyone wears heels any more. But whenever u go to a wedding most women are wearing them!

Heels make no sense to me.

Marchintospring · 04/03/2024 22:16

Maybe it might be a question of overall look. The 2000’s fashion has been overwhelmingly traditional feminine long hair. Flat clumpy shoes give it a masculine balance. Same as the grungy 90’s look.
In the 80’s and 90’s when hair was short, heels counterbalanced that.

Cork wedge sandals in summer are still ok though, right .... Right?!? Love mine so much

Wear them all summer, always have. So easy, breezy and freeing.

Merrymouse · 04/03/2024 22:21

Still plenty of heeled shoes for sale so somebody must be buying them.

Most of the women on The Apprentice aren't even wearing them this year. It is truly the end of the heel.

I truly hope that is true but something tells me they will be back!

Eurgh that's a crass saying 🥴 does it get said about men?

Yes it absolutely does, mostly in the context of magazine photo shoots wearing only underpants.

MorrisZapp · 04/03/2024 22:41

Every dress modelled on Pretty Little Thing is paired with heels. Don't think young women have binned them quite yet.

My early noughties career in the City was all pencil skirts and high heels, apart from dress-down Friday which was trainers and combats or jeans. It was always such bliss on Friday wearing clothes I could move and be comfortable in. Seems absolutely baffling now tottering about in heels every day.

MorrisZapp · 04/03/2024 22:45

I don't like some of the sneering on this thread at women who wear heels - frumpy, old fashioned, Turkey teeth etc.

I don't wear heels, not because I think I am more fashion forward than people who do, but do we really have to denigrate women who do?

Seconded. I wear a moderate Manolo Blahnik pair about once a year and the last time I vowed never again. I'll get an evening pair of flats. But all the sneering on here is unnecessary.

The interesting thing being that it was men who used to wear the heels . Can't remember the time period . I'm sure someone who knows more about that time period will inform us .

King Louis XIV of France and Navarre, reigned during the second half of the seventeenth century. Loved embroidered shoes with red heels and was a very good ballet dancer. I wonder what he would have made of Louboutins?

Wear heels or don’t wear heels, whatever you like.

But don’t show your fashion ignorance by saying they’re dated or old fashioned or sneer at people who admit to wearing them.

To quote Cosmopolitan last month “no matter if you're into a more comfy aesthetic or sky-high heels, trend forecasting is v important to remain in the know and discover which designs best suit your exact vibes.”

I think heels are similar to skinny jeans. They aren't really in but many people find them flattering and good for an easy going out outfit. Someone wearing heels during the day is very rare in my world.

I think there's been a big move away from dressing to flatter especially in younger people. When I came of age in the 90s, it was all about what could we wear to look thinner. These days there's much more body positivity. People wear what they feel comfortable in or how they want to express themselves. Less often that's heels.

There's a difference between pointy stiletto shoes and some chunky block heel boots which tend to be much more comfortable and cool.

What isn't cool is when people take on too high heels and end up having to take them off and wonder round bare or webbed foot. I think you need to have a pair you can commit to for the full evening, otherwise there's no point.

I've got really short legs so tend to look for shoes and boots with a slight heel (1 inch ish) just to give me a bit more length.

Edited

I never stopped wearing bootcuts for the exact same reason: they suit and flatter me. They work best over a low heel. In flats, they drag on the floor.

TwentyFirstCenturyFox · 04/03/2024 23:08

I'm short. I need a heel on a night out to look less stumpy. They may be out of fashion but I'm not prepared to look as short and squat as I do without them.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 04/03/2024 23:10

I do wonder however what footwear is acceptable footwear for the posters who are making these disparaging comments?

I haven't worn heels with any regularity for around 15 years- maybe longer, since I discovered Pretty Ballerina. The majority of my shoes now are from Pretty Ballerina. They're comfortable, smart, really well made and hard wearing. But they've been sneered at and mocked on here too.

I've been told they're sooo dated (despite Vogue, Anna Murphy and similar who might possibly know what they're talking about saying exactly the opposite) or that they'd look terrible with a dress, or smart clothes or evening clothes (they don't).

JaceLancs · 04/03/2024 23:17

I wear pointed flats most of the time but find a small heel very comfortable in shoes or boots
if I can walk in them all day I don’t see the problem
I don’t find trainers that comfortable as I have very narrow feet and they are always too wide

Who cares. Nobody seeks style advice from a bunch of internet randoms.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 04/03/2024 20:42

You've just been trained by fashion to think they look shit. Do you think men in suits look shit without heels?

Personally I wear loafers or smart trainers, most of the time at work. I have some more delicate flats for smart dresses.

It depends on the man's trouser shape. Wider trousers over a flat shoe will trail on the ground at the back unless shortened to the point that they flap and show his socks, so he needs a slight block heel.

Skinny jeans on men should always be tucked into heeled cowboy boots (or New Rocks, if the jeans are black and the belt is spiky) that are at least an inch high. It's the law.

friendlyflicka · 04/03/2024 23:25

I have never been able to wear heels and my large lumpy feet are the only bit of me that I don't like. I would love some shoes that look elegant and stylish that are not trainers. I wear boots in winter, often with block heels but would like the summer equivalent. If anyone can suggest?

roundofapplause · 04/03/2024 23:26

harriethoyle · 04/03/2024 16:40

I wear them every day.

To reassure a pp, I have my own teeth, my own skin colour is unenhanced and I'm pretty sure I'm not orange, I don't have fillers and I don't have a facelift ponytail. Judgey much? 🙄

Same!!

BigWillyLittleTodger · 04/03/2024 16:55

How come loads of celebs at the Brits were wearing heels if they are frumpy, dated and old fashioned?

Because they make most people’s legs look better. The only places I see them are at awards, posh posh dinner dates and maybe a wedding - where you stand up for 5 mins to be photographed / clocked, and then sit down. For the awards people mostly bring flats for after parties, for weddings they always do and for dinner you get a taxi home.

lambhotpot · 04/03/2024 23:34

flats trainers boots sliders anything but heels.

theduchessofspork · 04/03/2024 23:35

@friendlyflicka I think there was a thread recently on v comfortable chunky heeled sandals recently. Same design lots of different colours. I think Oliver Bonas carried some stock. They looked quite nice.
