Who still wears heels?

Saw a woman in heels at lunchtime, in the queue for sandwiches, and just thought, can't remember the last time I saw someone in heels at work. To be fair I work in Government and we are a fairly scruffy bunch. But even on a night out it mostly seems to be trainers or flats.

You've just been trained by fashion to think they look shit. Do you think men in suits look shit without heels?

Personally I wear loafers or smart trainers, most of the time at work. I have some more delicate flats for smart dresses.

That’s not a comparison though is it? Men are wearing trousers, you can’t see their legs.

If you can wear open flats (ballerina-type shoes) without the shoes getting left on the floor behind you when you walk, Envy and you want stunning shoes for something like a wedding, try khussa pumps. You can get them from millions of places in lots of beaded velvet and satin colours. BUT, you have to prepare them first by wearing them around the house with damp socks for a couple of days. They don't come in left and right, you make them into left and right by molding them to your feet with the damp socks.

I managed to find a vendor years ago, now ceased trading, 😭 who sold a variant that had a tall tab at the heel and an ankle tie that went through the tab, solving the "left behind when I walk" problem.

Nope.

I have some which are comfortable enough to wear all day.
I can walk/run/dance freely in them.
They make my legs look gorgeous.

Still nope. They just feel dated, and overdone, and I'm too tall, and just nope.

@friendlyflicka I think there was a thread recently on v comfortable chunky heeled sandals recently. Same design lots of different colours. I think Oliver Bonas carried some stock. They looked quite nice.

Thanks, I will look it up

Because they make most people’s legs look better. The only places I see them are at awards, posh posh dinner dates and maybe a wedding - where you stand up for 5 mins to be photographed / clocked, and then sit down. For the awards people mostly bring flats for after parties, for weddings they always do and for dinner you get a taxi home.

My point was celebrities wouldn’t wear them if they were dated/frumpy/unfashionable as stated by so many on here, if they were so dated celebrities wouldn’t wear them at all, no matter how much better they made their legs look. I was using them as an example to counteract the claims on here.

Celebrities are another species though. I'm not going to red carpet events or being papped.

I'd look just as ridiculous (and not 'on trend') going about my everyday life in Louboutin stilettoes as I would in a bespoke $10,000 gown or with a nose job and half a kilo of filler in my face.

I do wonder however what footwear is acceptable footwear for the posters who are making these disparaging comments?

Who cares. Nobody seeks style advice from a bunch of internet randoms.

Well I don't but clearly people do or this part of the forum would largely not exist.

There's the Toast thread the Parisian de Mamasnet thread thread , the Tiara threads and the odd red carpet thread where posters are discussing clothes, not looking looking for advice. Then there's everything else.

To be clear my question was pondering, not seeking advice.

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 05/03/2024 00:41

I'm short and in a professional job so u wear heels daily in work and on nights out. Weekend days with the kids are runners. Would be devastated if heels didn't exist.

Growlybear83 · 05/03/2024 00:42

I live in London and I've not noticed that women aren't wearing heels any more. I can't manage to wear heels as high as I did when I was younger now that I'm in my 60s, but I always wear mid heel courts or sandals with a skirt or dress - I've always thought flat shoes look awful with skirts. And no, I'm not orange, I don't have turkey teeth or fillers, and have never gone out with a pony tail in my life. I don't find shoes with heels any more or less comfortable than any other type of footwear and think it depends on the make and material used in the shoes. I really don't care at all whether something is fashionable or not - I wear what I like and what I think suits me.

Deebee90 · 05/03/2024 00:47

I work for an airline so I wear heels everyday. Mine are comfy and I find my feet hurt now in flats so that’s my choice. I do 12 hours plus in heels

AzureBlue99 · 05/03/2024 01:02

Geri Horner looked uncomfortable trying to match her errant husband's stride at the weekend. She probably wore very high heels as a power move but she already looked like a victim without the uncomfortable footwear. Her high heels just made her look even more powerless.

SuperstarDeejay · 05/03/2024 01:25

Bianca Censori is always in them (and nothing else) too. In contrast to her husband looking comfy and warm in trainers and leisure wear. It really tells a story.

Lookingoutside · 05/03/2024 01:39

Never wear shoes you can’t run in.

IloveAslan · 05/03/2024 03:12

I've never worn them, other than on my wedding day and they were quite low heels. I've always hated them, whether they were in fashion or not I wasn't going to be wearing them (I'm 64).

Also, I walk everywhere so comfort is necessary.

Mylippy · 04/03/2024 21:18

I have about 40 pairs of heels from river island all very trendy if anything looks frumpy it’s flats yuk

Well, that's just your opinion. I think heels look ugly, and I've thought that my entire life. When I see someone wearing them now "trendy" is the very last thing that goes through my mind!

StrawberryJellyBelly · 05/03/2024 03:41

Raspberryjamsandwich · 04/03/2024 20:49

So genuine question, if heels are out, what do you wear to a wedding? I've got 3 coming up this year. Not been to one in ages.

Wear whatever you want. It matters not a bit that on MN heels are out for various reasons. Dress to suit yourself and the occasion and have a great time.

StarlightLady · 05/03/2024 04:57

Heels? Never!

garlictwist · 05/03/2024 05:38

I have awful feet with arthritis, bunions and haglunds deformity so I can only wear trainers. Not even smart flat shoes. I wear trainers with everything, even weddings. The last wedding I went to I noticed a few other women wearing trainers too. I do think the heel is dead. It always looks so eighties when the women on the Apprentice wear them.

Copen · 05/03/2024 06:22

I don't wear them day to day, but am going to a summer wedding this year and will wear them then. I'm short and just want to feel more confident, my legs aren't great. They will be 70s style platform sandals rather than stilettos.

Maybe your a little frumpy but that’s just my opinion too 🤣🤣

You have awful feet ect guess your just a little envious of the ppl who wear pretty heels that have pretty feet and nice legs

Floisme · 05/03/2024 06:59

I gave up heels when I was about 19 but I can't stand the sanctimonious attitude to them from some quarters of S&B now that they're (probably temporarily) out of fashion.

A lifetime wearing flats doesn't mean I'm smarter or a better feminist - it just means I don't like heels.

I'm also pretty sure they'll be back in fashion at some point.

RedRobyn2021 · 05/03/2024 06:59

I have t worn heels in years

I hope it is the end for them

SillyCrab · 05/03/2024 07:17

It is so bizarre that there is still what is turning into an argument about this.
Surely both sides can understand you pick what you personally like to wear.

Really what is 'fashionable' doesn't matter. We are all mature women not teenagers influenced by what we see in magazines or what the boys like.

I like heels, you like flats.
Occasionally I might wear a pair of flat strappy sandals.
Occasionally you might see a pair of heels that would be perfect with a particular outfit.
There might be someone else who has one bright pink pair of trainers and wears them with everything.

Its really not worth being nasty about, someone else's shoes don't effect you in anyway.

Something may or may not be fashionable but the majority of people aren't that bothered.

Princessfluffy · 05/03/2024 07:28

For me they will always be a symbol of oppression so I am delighted that they are no longer required to be worn in many jobs as they were when I was young.

Foot binding and overly tight corsets were also once fashionable and I hope that high heels will be consigned to history this century in the same way.
