WTF - Horseshoe Jeans

I’m still not over how bad Mom jeans look on most people. I accept skinny jeans are over, I am happy in my straight legged jeans. But all over my instagram feed are these new ‘horseshoe’ jeans. That basically make you look like you have bandy legs? Just why?

I know I don’t have to wear them I am just despairing of all these awful jeans trends.

I do love a flare. I shall stick with that.

I've never heard of this trend so naturally, in the spirit of adventure, consulted Google. I think I quite like these ones (sorry, OP):

We The Free Good Luck Mid-Rise Barrel Jeans | Free People UK

I am short of arse though, so probably won't risk it.

PepperyTaste · 23/02/2024 20:18

The thing is almost anything can look cool if you wear it with aplomb. Especially if you’re 25 and size 10. Sometimes the message is “I’d even look good in a sackcloth, I don’t have to try”! 😃

The only jeans I don’t like are skinny jeans. I wore them from 25 years ago. Not even wild horses could make me wear them again.

Mumsanetta · 23/02/2024 20:30

@Butchyrestingface ooh they’re nice. How short are you? I reckon you could get away with them with a fitted top.

FeelingSoOverwhelmed · 23/02/2024 20:33

I like them. I think the changes in silhouette and the variety of jean shapes available nowadays is interesting.
I always find a lot of style and beauty posts seem quite resistant to change in shapes/style but I'm pretty surprised by the unanimous hatred for these. I'm seriously tempted by the warehouse ones! I have some silver loafers and fitted jumpers I think they'd look good with 🤔

5 2". Just wee.

Bec945 · 23/02/2024 22:42

Looks Like they have ricketts 😩

nzeire · 24/02/2024 07:10

Omg! LOVE THEM!!!!

nzeire · 24/02/2024 07:39

Just bought the river island ones!

GenericUserNickname · 24/02/2024 08:26

You need to hurry with those Selfridges horseshoe jeans as they only have a few left in random sizes and a lot of sizes have already sold out. (Might have the app 😳

Mumsanetta · 24/02/2024 11:24

Here’s a photo. I’m a curvy size 16. In the second photo you can see there’s quite a sharp taper from the knee to the ankle. As with most clothes, they look very different on a “normal” body and the silhouette isn’t quite as shocking when worn!

I tried these on in Anthropologie while looking for wide legs. https://www.anthropologie.com/en-gb/shop/pilcro-button-front-barrel-ankle-jeans?color=026&inventoryCountry=GB&countryCode=GB&utm_content=&utm_medium=paid_search&utm_source=google&utm_term=&utm_kxconfid=vx65edeg7&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAxOauBhCaARIsAEbUSQTNlkWVym6Y9ed0AeRk44jSiTXDuQcy2hSW0p19WE_iKFrl2Wwi9fMaAjd5EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&type=REGULAR&quantity=1

They say they are barrel jeans, but actually have a horseshoe shape but it’s less extreme than some on this thread! And I really loved them, they looked great. It just kind of gave them more shape so they weren’t flappy, but not a bandy-legged look.

Didn’t buy as they’re £120 and not a great colour, but I think it’s worth trying a “mild” horseshoe.

henlake7 · 24/02/2024 13:04

I feel like designers are maybe running out of things to do with denim, but are determined its going to be 'a big thing' this year......hence the weirdness!
I think with jeans you just have to go with what suits you best. I love wide leg and bootleg personally.
Skinnies will always be in the wardrobe though. Invaluable for dog walking or anywhere its raining and you dont want wet trouser cuffs!

ConstantastheNorthernStar · 24/02/2024 13:14

@Laiste God, I loved Miss Sixty when I was 25. Very pleased to hear they are still going!

@Butchyrestingface I'm 5'3 and barrel jeans look fine on me worn with chunky boots. Not sure they are "flattering" as such, but I quite like them anyway.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 24/02/2024 17:28

I just roll the horseshoe jean’s hems up to give it the ‘Dexys Midnight Runners’ vibe.

Mind you, I have to roll most things up (as a short arse), and at 51 I simply don’t give a fig anymore.

Also, you’ll have to pry my other jeans (skinny and strategically ripped) off my cold, dead legs. If I’m not wearing my Dexys that is.

crazyaginglady · 24/02/2024 20:05

I’m all for a looser silhouette but barrel leg was the tipping point into the ridiculous for me, and horseshoe. Just no. Mom, flare, bootcut, straight and wide leg all look stylish or quirky but I struggle to get on board with barrel and horseshoe.

I actually don’t see many skinny jeans round my way at all anymore and despite having worn them for a decade, they do nothing for me.

DerekFaker · 24/02/2024 20:11

Yeah they're awful. I don't like barrel legs either.

And what's with styling them with high or kitten heels, or what some Mumsnetters might call 'mum boots'? It's such a weird and old-fashioned look.

DerekFaker · 24/02/2024 20:24

littlestrawberryhat · 22/02/2024 08:32

I have a couple of pairs of these barrel/horseshoe jeans and I love that they are so divisive! Means I must be doing something right 😂😂 the silhouette works on me and I quite like the costumey, romantic-y edge to them. Just feel fresh and cool in them. I expect the haters also hated skinny jeans when they came out and will find themselves wearing them in the next 5 years or so when they’ve trickled down to supermarket fashion

Not sure about. You do get new shapes/cuts/colours, etc that just never really catch on every few years or so. I think this might be one of them - they're a bit too outlandish.

UglyModernWindows · 25/02/2024 09:23

I really like those Warehouse ones! This thread has finally made me realise that I’m an inverted triangle and that’s why voluminous bottoms and form fitting tops looks good on me. So many things make sense now hah!

@Mumsanetta thanks for posting the photo! I think the jeans look good on you 🤗

Delatron · 25/02/2024 09:45

I think this thread has shown they definitely suit some people. I think maybe they’re more of a ‘micro trend’ so it won’t be like skinnies - that were everywhere and for quite some time, if wore anything other than skinnies then you were not fashionable! At least we have choice now and can pick and choose.

I would love the skinny (ish) jean tucked in to a boot and a baggy jumper trend to come back though. I have footwear issues in winter with baggier jean types (and top issues).

These look good on you, especially with the tucked in jumper - I agree about the sharp taper - that works well.

I agree!! They are actually lovely on you, maybe they should have you modelling them instead.
I’ve gone from laughing at the clown pants, to thinking they are nice with one photo!

ilovesushi · 25/02/2024 11:36

Horseshoe jeans look terrible! Who wants to look like they have enormous bandy legs. I am finding it hard to let go of my skinnies. I wear jeans a lot for work and I just think they look more put together than wide leg styles.

Squirrelsnut · 25/02/2024 12:08

Skinny jeans are more rickett-y if you ask me - a lot of people are somewhat knock-kneed and there's nowhere to hide in skinnies. Not that I care - they're denim leg coverings, not the meaning of life.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 25/02/2024 12:29

Love a Mumsnet jeans thread for the laughs. I’ve been in barrel and balloon leg jeans since about 2018, and as a pear-shaped person skinny jeans always looked absolutely shit on me so I was thrilled to see the back of them.

Those look great on you, @Mumsanetta
