WTF - Horseshoe Jeans

I’m still not over how bad Mom jeans look on most people. I accept skinny jeans are over, I am happy in my straight legged jeans. But all over my instagram feed are these new ‘horseshoe’ jeans. That basically make you look like you have bandy legs? Just why?

I know I don’t have to wear them I am just despairing of all these awful jeans trends.

I do love a flare. I shall stick with that.

Those are horrific. I'm so glad I'm not a slave to fashion! Skinnies are always in in my house but were called drain pipes in the 80s. I got my first pair from Janet Frazer catalogue circa 1983 and have been smitten ever since as they're the only shape that look half decent on me. I did venture into boot cut at one point but I'm short and they didn't flatter. M&S sienna are my current favourites, I think they call them straight leg but they're skinny on me 😆

Plus, the drainpipes of the 80s (we also called them skin tight jeans) didn't have any give in them. No lycra or owt like that then. They were the sort where you had to lie down on the bed and kick and thrash about to get into them.

I got mine from Geordie Jeans. Some folk not from the NE of England might think this was a made up shop from a Vic and Bob sketch. It wasn't, it was very real and a mecca to denim.

Are lightweight chambray baggy jeans not in for this Spring and Summer? I loved them (turn ups optional) back in the 80s too. From Kays catalogue.

Floisme · 21/02/2024 09:42

I've got some cotton trousers a similar shape that I bought on holiday several years ago. Didn't know there was a name for them. I wear them every summer. As for jeans, I also wear barrel leg, straight leg, wide leg and flares. I like having the choice.

I'm curious as to why this makes anyone despair? Have a good laugh by all means - up to you - but despair? I could understand it if they were a compulsory uniform or if you couldn't get hold of the style you liked any more but I can't remember there ever being more choice of jeans than there is now.

I like them too! I don’t mind skinnies or the slim leg ones, I find them warmer in winter.
But I do love barrel leg jeans if they’re not too clownish wide. I would definitely be curious to try the horse shoe ones 🤷‍♀️
It’s just about the type of look and silhouette you’re going for and what you style them with. I’m fairly tall and I think barrel leg jeans work quite well for me, but I’ve also seen them on shorter women and it looked good too.

Yay, a friend in this lonely wilderness! I’m 5ft4 and like to wear mine with a fine knit sweater (usually either black, black and white stripe or taupe) and silver loafers. There I was thinking I looked tres chic 😂

whengodwasarabbit1 · 21/02/2024 10:06

Oh I love them! I'm no fashion follower but a mum Jean or something baggy suits my frame, I'm short with a very flat bum which I like to hide. Hate skinnies on me.

Giggorata · 21/02/2024 10:09

I don’t mind them and might even try a pair.

The introduction of a new silhouette is often met with disdain, because of the outlandish and unfamiliar look.
(flapper dresses, dropped waists, quiffs, flares, shoulder pads, oxford bags, beehives, bat wing sleeves, lagenlook, to name but a few)
After a while, they seem to just click.

You'd have to fight me to get my skinnies away from me, all the same.

nunsflipflop · 21/02/2024 10:33

I am short, these would just make me look like I had lost my horse!

DreadPirateRobots · 21/02/2024 10:41

So horseshoe jeans are just barrel legs then? Already got several pairs. Very fond of my Kin heavy indigo barrel legs.

mibbelucieachwell · 21/02/2024 10:54

Gosh.

I think they’re slightly different to barrel legs in that they go out more in the middle - if that makes sense!

It will be interesting to see how this trend pans out..!

That sounds very chic. I think if you can rock them then they look very fashionable.

I can’t work out if I’d suit them - I have no hips, slim legs but a bit of a peri tummy..I don’t think they’re for me.

High waisted flares suit me as they suck me in, don’t drown me as they cling to the thighs and then I like the flare at the bottom.

They make me think of Benny Hill dressed as the Cowboy. Just horrendous.

Sufac · 21/02/2024 11:48

I quite like them, but on others. I do not suit any style of trousers at all.

Of course skinny jeans exist, but they’re not fashionable and haven’t been for a while. But neither are a lot of things most people wear (me included obviously). I think of skinny jeans as the female equivalent of the middle aged dad cargo shorts look. Standard, not particularly fashionable, but obviously comfortable for the wearer. I don’t think skinny jeans or cargo shorts will ever die!

ICantbelieveitMeldrew · 21/02/2024 11:50

@HCHQ come on now...

Runningwildish · 21/02/2024 11:57

I think those carrot leg and barrel leg jeans suit those who carry their weight on their legs. Skinny jeans suit those with slim legs

ICantbelieveitMeldrew · 21/02/2024 11:59

Isn't that the phrase that is always used on here - parsnip legs? Yet now it is a trend to have vegetable legs.

Fernie6491 · 21/02/2024 12:01

anunlikelyseahorse · 20/02/2024 21:29

Oh it's the Rickets look!

Just showed my DH the photo of them - he said exactly the same! They seem less like horseshoe and more like horseless! 😆

BabyShaark · 21/02/2024 12:26

Had no idea what horseshoe jeans were (I don’t wear trousers) but just looked them up and my goodness they’re fugly

Geordie Jeans! My 14 year old self just sighed in nostalgia. My first ever pair from there were stonewashed Lee jeans.

Lion400 · 21/02/2024 12:53

If men can be women, anything goes. These look like pirate jeans to me. Bargain though, at least.

I think they’re fun 🤷‍♀️

TwoWithCurls · 21/02/2024 13:15

Skinny jeans only briefly went away, but are now back, renamed 'cigarette jeans' or something like that.

CherryRipe1 · 21/02/2024 13:17

Giddy-uppp! Git on ya horse an riiide em cowboy.

ShiveringMeTimbers · 21/02/2024 13:27

Glad to hear skinny jeans are back. I haven't worn any other type since the mid 00s (although prefer them more on the slim side than super skinny).

Those M&S carrot jeans are an abomination.

I did buy some M&S sienna jeans but I've only worn them a couple of times so far. I like to be able to tuck my jeans into my boots. Straight jeans look a bit formal to me, like they're trying to be denim trousers.
