WTF - Horseshoe Jeans

I’m still not over how bad Mom jeans look on most people. I accept skinny jeans are over, I am happy in my straight legged jeans. But all over my instagram feed are these new ‘horseshoe’ jeans. That basically make you look like you have bandy legs? Just why?

I know I don’t have to wear them I am just despairing of all these awful jeans trends.

I do love a flare. I shall stick with that.

They look as if they'd make you do a funny walk whether you wanted to or not.

JFDIYOLO · 21/02/2024 00:21

Skinny jeans make me look like a giant lightbulb from behind.

I like straight legs or a boot cut.

Those horseshoe things are the most ludicrous shape I've seen.

And I remember hipster flares so low cut, you could tell if the wearer was a natural blonde ...

Emma8888 · 21/02/2024 00:33

They look absurd but I've got nothing generally against boot cut / wider leg jeans - I think they tend to balance out big boobs very well. Skinny jeans + big boobs can make some people look 'weeble' top heavy.

ConstantastheNorthernStar · 21/02/2024 00:45

@Emma8888 I remember bootcut jeans in the late 90s with pointed boots underneath - everyone's legs looked 6 inches longer. It actually took a while for skinnies to take hold, as they took a bit of getting used to after the forgiving bootcut.

They look like the bloomers worn underneath a pantomime dame’s skirt to me, which possibly has the same effect on the walk!

This pic 🤦🏼‍♀️

Awful things - I'll stick to my bootcut/flares thanks.

sofagofa · 21/02/2024 03:08

£350 for a pair of frumpy looking jeans? No thanks 😂

Dita73 · 21/02/2024 04:10

Clearly made for people with bow legs who couldn’t stop a pig in an alleyway

Charlieradioalphapapa · 21/02/2024 06:25

Issey Misayaki got their first though

Overtheatlantic · 21/02/2024 06:35

I’ve seen them at the circus I think.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 21/02/2024 06:39

Had to Google horseshoe jeans..awful
I'm sticking with my skinnies whether they're 'fashionable' or not!

Tatonka · 21/02/2024 06:41

Wow truly hideous. I wonder if these designers just do things for a laugh and see what dummies will fall for it

I was just thinking that.

the walk animation GIF

Reminds me of Charlie Chaplin line dancing.

MN yet again alerts me to trends that I was totally unaware of. I Googled and watched some videos of women showing how they would 'style' these things and they look dreadful and do nothing for them.

@Emma8888 I remember bootcut jeans in the late 90s with pointed boots underneath - everyone's legs looked 6 inches longer. It actually took a while for skinnies to take hold, as they took a bit of getting used to after the forgiving bootcut.

I don't think the bootcut is remotely forgiving.

The addition of fabric at a point in the body where it should be narrower invariably ended up making the legs took sturdier. The only exception was with the very willowy of thigh, because the extreme skinniness/thigh gap would be enough to counterbalance the effect.

Skinnies actually vanished from shops in the 90s (it was the last hurrah of the fashion industry dictatorship). People like me positively rushed to buy skinnies as soon as they started re-appearing, and they were a common shape rapidly - much faster than the introduction/reintroduction of other fashions.

(Plus of course if you have fabulous boots, you may well want them to be seen, not covered up, and no-one likes heavy wet fabric round their ankles)

I can remember being quite sarcastic about "balloon" shaped jeans a few years ago, and was told I was just an unfashionable reactionary - but those didn't catch on either (sank even faster than most attempts to get us to buy more)

People just don't want fast fashion - mix of lower spending and environmental awareness. So are looking for style not fashion.

And many on this thread have said that skinnies are and will remain their style, and that OP was wrong to think they are over. But if OP doesn't think that form-fitting jeans suit her style (and perhaps she already has a wardrobe full of things she'd rather wear over a wide bottom half) and these are the latest fashion trend, then yes go for it if they appeal to you. Especially if you know you'll be wearing them so frequently that they will wear out before you want to change cuts.

Am I the only one who loves them? They’re basically barrell jeans. I wear my black pair near on everyday!

I like them too! I don’t mind skinnies or the slim leg ones, I find them warmer in winter.
But I do love barrel leg jeans if they’re not too clownish wide. I would definitely be curious to try the horse shoe ones 🤷‍♀️
It’s just about the type of look and silhouette you’re going for and what you style them with. I’m fairly tall and I think barrel leg jeans work quite well for me, but I’ve also seen them on shorter women and it looked good too.

TastyLikeARaindrop · 21/02/2024 08:46

Those are horrific. I'm so glad I'm not a slave to fashion! Skinnies are always in in my house but were called drain pipes in the 80s. I got my first pair from Janet Frazer catalogue circa 1983 and have been smitten ever since as they're the only shape that look half decent on me. I did venture into boot cut at one point but I'm short and they didn't flatter. M&S sienna are my current favourites, I think they call them straight leg but they're skinny on me 😆

I agree with bootcuts being not particularly forgiving, especially when they’re (too) tight around the hips and thighs. Same goes for flares.

EmailMyHeart · 21/02/2024 08:53

Googling these is the best laugh I’ve had all week 🤣

I accept skinnies are still around. I loved my skinnies - I don’t have a ‘wide bottom half’. I’m a size 8. I guess my point is that they are not the height of fashion at the moment - if you go out in skinny jeans and a nice top that isn’t considered ‘fashionable’.

Mom jeans don’t suit me, barrel jeans don’t suit me. I love a flare and a wide legged trouser. I like a skinny jean. I just don’t feel fashionable in them (and I know that’s my issue and shouldn’t matter). These jeans look like the emperor’s new clothes to me.

My favourite look was skinny jeans and a loose top/jumper with boots. That needs to come back. I cannot rock baggy jeans and a crop top

I end up wearing leggings and hiking boots and baggy jumpers to get round this. I know I should just wear the skinny jeans!!
