I've always liked dressing pretty/girly. My style I fantasise as being inspired by Carrie's early fancy style in Sex and the City.

I decided I want some more stuff for my look after a 50s style cotton floral halter neck swing dress phase.

I thought, why not party dresses (not massively OTT.) I didn't want to spend much so went for shein. I can always buy a more durable brand at a later date.

So I've bought

I'll wear these with shrugs and leggings. Or I might change my mind when they arrive and send it all back. Grin

I just thought I'd post these for your amusement.

They are very much early Carrie but I'm not sure about wearing them with leggings

porridgeisbae · 10/02/2024 10:37

@GettingStuffed Ah ok. Opaque black tights? Still need to be warm enough for day to day.

Darklingthrush123 · 10/02/2024 10:39

lovely! You’ll brighten the world up. Agree not leggings but tights

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 10:43

is this an advert for Shein?

porridgeisbae · 10/02/2024 10:48

@sorestupid No. They would've put things which appeal to a wider range of people and they wouldn'tve implied Shein is cheap and cheerful. :)

and they wouldn'tve implied Shein is cheap and cheerful.

tbf is there anyone who doesn’t know Shein is cheap…

porridgeisbae · 10/02/2024 10:54

@sorestupid I know. I'm just saying Shein wouldn't admit they are not durable, which is what I put in the OP, so it's not an advert.

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 11:03

fair enough

Butchyrestingface · 10/02/2024 14:51

I like number 3. Nice colour.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 10/02/2024 14:52

Love all those dresses but TBH I never saw Carrie in a dress like that with a pair of black tights! Can't you save them for a couple of months and wear them with bare legs?

XiCi · 10/02/2024 15:03

Really like the last one. Would save for spring/summer and ditch the black tights though

nopuppiesallowed · 10/02/2024 16:08

Shein? Have we all forgotten forced Uighur labour?

Windwaysway · 10/02/2024 17:01

I don’t think they’ll have the effect you want - those dresses she wore we’re either designer or vintage.

those cheap ones from Shein just won’t fall correctly on your body. and the fabric will be cheap and won’t ‘swish’ correctly.

you can get vintage dresses in that style from vintage shops or Vinted. It’s definitely worth paying a little more.

also please avoid Shein in the future, they are causing absolute misery to the women/ children who sewed those dresses and causing extreme pollution. The argument that it’s ‘affordable’ or ‘accessible’ really doesn’t cut it anymore.

porridgeisbae · 10/02/2024 17:02

@theriseandfallofFranklinSaint I hardly ever go bare legged. Hairless legs look no better than hairy on me because it just makes me go scabby :) If it's roasting I wear black over the knee socks. :)

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 10/02/2024 17:13

I think they will look fine with slightly cropped leggings and ballet shoes - perhaps toning coloured leggings rather than black .

Oldraver · 10/02/2024 17:16

I love them all. though myself I dont get on with spaghetti straps

I think you should wear what you fancy (says the woman nearly always in cat dresses)

ChewbaccasMrs · 10/02/2024 17:42

Their gorgeous dresses especially the second one, good for you OP I bet you'll look amazing.

The majority of my wardrobe is nice dresses,in the winter I wear one's that are a bit thicker and long sleeved or with 3/4 length sleeves and I wear them with knee high boots( I have several pairs in different colours now)and in the summer I wear thinner dresses with sandals, kitten heels or flip flops depending on the dress and where I'm going.

MouseMinge · 10/02/2024 18:26

Have they arrived yet? It's very much hit and miss with Shein. I've bought from them in the past, but not for quite some time, and I've had some decent items and some that are laughably nothing like the photos and/or really poor quality. I hope you end up with the decent side of the equation and good on you for dressing exactly how you want!

Lavenderandbrown · 10/02/2024 18:44

Not a SHEIN fan or customer but they are all pretty and you will be darling in them. Wear them how you are most comfortable…tights or socks. I like it when people rock out the workplace and bring a little je ne sais quoi to the world. The pink one with hearts for Valentine’s for sure. I’m not commenting on the fast fashion because that’s not your post

Mummyofbananas · 10/02/2024 18:56

I feel like leggings under dresses are probably just about due a comeback with the 2000's fashions, you might start a trend.

I'm sure you can get skin coloured tights that are lined though that might work and feel warm.

sonjadog · 10/02/2024 20:00

I would go for tights rather than leggings. Personally, I think they look better. Leggings can be a bit lumpy and ruin the sleek look.

Princesspollyyy · 10/02/2024 20:25

They look ok, but where are you planning on wearing them, is there an occasion?

I think it could look a bit silly if you're going to Tesco or Aldi in them, but if you were off to a party then it could look ok.

DiamondGazette · 10/02/2024 21:02

I wear a lot of dresses, with thick tights, knee length boots and a chunky cardigan in winter, then capri leggings, ballet flats and a lightweight jacket in spring, and a just a pair of flipflops in summer. I think you can wear party dresses all year round, yes, even to the supermarket. I love seeing people with a whimsical and quirky sense of style.

Ethical consumerism is a luxury not everyone can afford.

But you can try...or not buy...or buy second hand. Some of the behind the scenes footage about Sheen was heartbreaking. I have stopped.
