party look 24/7 :)

I've always liked dressing pretty/girly. My style I fantasise as being inspired by Carrie's early fancy style in Sex and the City.

I decided I want some more stuff for my look after a 50s style cotton floral halter neck swing dress phase.

I thought, why not party dresses (not massively OTT.) I didn't want to spend much so went for shein. I can always buy a more durable brand at a later date.

So I've bought

I'll wear these with shrugs and leggings. Or I might change my mind when they arrive and send it all back. Grin

I just thought I'd post these for your amusement.

@autumnpumpkinlattes Yep I like some of those too but thought the look might be OTT enough on its own :)

@Brawcolli Obviously I mean, like, say, late teens. I should've said young women really. I just don't get not making the most of it while you have it. I mean, not baps out necessarily but something with a waist. Some of the cropped jumpers can look ok though. Just personal preference.

Well yes of course it is personal preference but in your post you expressed shock that younger woman were not styling themselves in a style you like to wear, which is very judgmental.

Going by the links you have posted, your style is ‘fit and flare’ which is a style a lot of people, young and old dislike, I personally really dislike this style and don’t find it at all flattering on anyone no matter their age or waist size.

Expressing shock that young woman don’t flaunt their waistlines while they still have it is a dreadful opinion.

KirstenBlest · 11/02/2024 17:10

...a lot of the young girls are in enormous oversized trousers and hoodies, most in plain colours.
If only they were where I am.

If I had SJP'S physique I'd show it off too. She's shortish, slight and looks like a ballerina.

It really is. There's so much more to choosing clothes, settling on one's style, playing around with the stories in your head, projecting the image you want, pleasing oneself, than "making the most" of your figure.

nopuppiesallowed · 11/02/2024 17:37

I love those brightly coloured tights, but in my opinion, something up top needs to include and echo that colour to prevent the turquoise overwhelming everything else.

Yeah that’s still really odd and judgemental.

Ethical consumerism is a luxury not everyone can afford.

No one is suggesting you buy an extremely expensive dress.

Windwaysway · 11/02/2024 18:02

TheLeadbetterLife · 10/02/2024 22:39

Please. You bought these dresses because you fancied them and you don’t give a fuck, not because you’re on the breadline and needed to clothe yourself.

At least own it.

I would have to agree with this! Sorry OP.

not only is SHEIN using forced Labour they are also polluting the planet at an alarming rate.

your argument that you can’t afford ethical clothing is just weak.

porridgeisbae · 11/02/2024 18:32

@TheLeadbetterLife@Windwaysway I did cancel the order and am going to look on Vinted etc which I haven't tried before, I just did 20 years of IRL charity shopping. But I literally own about four outfits. For the entire year. That's it. Do you only have 4 outfits in total? I don't even have a wardrobe.

And I fancied a bit of 'luxury'- so what? And that's even if you consider someone daring to have more than 4 outfits in total as decadent. How many outfits do you have? I have four dresses, and a charity shop jumpsuit for wash day. That's literally it, apart from leggings, a couple of vests for the gym etc. And pretty dresses are important to me. Everyone has their thing that they like.

Everyone buys themselves something sometimes, even monks probably.

And no I don't have a massive amount of money, I'm disabled and unable to work for life. A lot of the middle class preoccupation with certain things and dissing others over it isn't intersectional.

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 11/02/2024 18:47

I doubt that monks buy fast fashion from Shein

porridgeisbae · 11/02/2024 18:54

This would've been the first time I used Shein btw, I've never used it before.

OP posts:
Attictroll · 11/02/2024 19:00

Enjoy buying yourself something nice that's ok...I think even if something looks nice from Shein it is still ugly because of the conditions in which it is made.

If you're disabled and unable to work the styles you are looking at are relatively simple I bet you could choose a fantastic material and make one from an online pattern if you have the time. It would be beautiful inside and out.

Hog wash.

Vinted and eBay have about a million strappy dresses like this. Some for about half the price of the ones you bought.

It’s not just a middle class preoccupation. There are ways to source clothing as ethically as you can, without spending lots of money OR using Shein. Aja Barber puts it eloquently here: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj5F2DqIEES/?igsh=Yjd2eGU1aXplOW5m

This thread is giving me weird vibes. Especially that comment that teenagers should wear clothes that accentuate their waist...

botheredand · 12/02/2024 21:12

I hope the dresses are worth the children's suffering. If you saw children or overworked, underpaid adults in a hot, filthy room sewing that crap plastic together, you might realise how poor your choice was.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/02/2024 21:36

Gosh there are some horrible judgy people on this thread .

Honestly S&B is getting worse than AIBU these days .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/02/2024 21:39

Unless people are buying their clothing from a manufacturer which is absolutely transparent in respect of the actual factory where their clothing is made (eg somewhere like Nomads) you are really kidding yourself if you think that they are made in much better conditions.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/02/2024 21:41

Very interested where you get all your clothes @botheredand

And even though you've just explained using charity shops for 20 years just buy yourself a sewing machine and fabric ...

Brawcolli · 11/02/2024 11:57

Sounds pretty judgmental to me 🤷‍♀️ also very odd to comment on young girls’ figures!

It isn't really. It's a fashion for [some] young pretty girls to wear ugly clothes. They do it because they can, because they look lovely regardless of the clothes.

I discovered Vinted recently and it's been great, much better prices than ebay for loads of things. Less great on descriptions and measurements, but if you know your size then it's okay. You'll certainly get better quality 2nd hand than new on Shein. I bought a skirt last year for a one off event, knowing it'd be poor quality but the reality was beyond cheap shit and I returned it immediately. Never again!

PiggieWig · 13/02/2024 03:19

I’d wear those dresses with fishnets and Doc Martens if I was younger and slimmer. I’d probably throw a biker jacket over too.
Might not be the look you’re going for though. I like to contrast delicate and tough.

chiwwy · 13/02/2024 15:32

porridgeisbae · 11/02/2024 00:29

I spent decades charity shopping and my experience was there is often a compromise involved, because what is there is what is there. As I got older, this compromise became more pronounced.

I haven't tried shopping second hand/charity etc online though, so that's worth a go.

Well done for boycotting Shein (for whatever reason). Although I mostly buy supermarket and Primark clothes so doubt I'm very ethical, but I do draw the line at Shein.

I don't understand how you've shopped for decades and only have 4 outfits to show for it though 😱

I have way too many clothes, my CBT counsellor suspects I have hoarding issues.

What is your trick? Do you give away clothes you don't like anymore?
