I've always liked dressing pretty/girly. My style I fantasise as being inspired by Carrie's early fancy style in Sex and the City.

I decided I want some more stuff for my look after a 50s style cotton floral halter neck swing dress phase.

I thought, why not party dresses (not massively OTT.) I didn't want to spend much so went for shein. I can always buy a more durable brand at a later date.

So I've bought

I'll wear these with shrugs and leggings. Or I might change my mind when they arrive and send it all back. Grin

I just thought I'd post these for your amusement.

I pretty much live in dresses with leggings, my favourite at the moment is this one which I wear with black leggings and a fitted t-shirt underneath to stay warm (yes I wear it to Lidl as well as to work). Edited as I forgot the actual link 🤦‍♀️

Ethical consumerism is a luxury not everyone can afford.

True. But there are alternatives - charity shops (very ethical), Vinted etc

Thehamsterthatcametotea · 10/02/2024 22:21

Ignoring the fact that they are from Shein Sadly I think it depends on your figure too.

I would love to see someone going around the supermarket dressed in any of these. It would really brighten my day. 😀I've really been noticing lately just how drab dark and boring everything looks where I live and have vowed to start wearing lots of more colourful clothing as I am often just as guity of this.
I think it's always bad in winter to be honest. Hardly a person in town that wasn't in a big black coat today. Depressing when the weather is so grey.

From an ethical point of view maybe vinted or ebay could have the types of things you like?

porridgeisbae · 10/02/2024 22:34

I did all the charity shop stuff for decades so I fancy some new things for a while nowadays.

Ethical consumerism is a luxury not everyone can afford.

Please. You bought these dresses because you fancied them and you don’t give a fuck, not because you’re on the breadline and needed to clothe yourself.

At least own it.

porridgeisbae · 10/02/2024 22:40

@peoplearepeople When the weather gets a little bit finer you could even have a colourful coat. :) I have a sensible one for rain/extreme cold but in the autumn I got this one https://prettykittyfashion.co.uk/products/mulled-wine-red-vintage-inspired-classic-swing-coat Be warned though, the pockets aren't real. :)

What shocks me, I mean I know it's fashion but a lot of the young girls are in enormous oversized trousers and hoodies, most in plain colours. And that's a trend that started before it got overly cold even. They all look like they have body dysmorphia and are trying to hide their bodies, even when not all of them are.

That coat is just beautiful 😍Unfortunately I already have 2 fit and flare coats that colour and am not sure I could justify another! I actually wore one last week and felt so much brighter and happier. I felt very much like I stood out a mile though. 😆
I used to wear bright colour all the time and think nothing of it. I'm not sure if my confidence has faded somewhat or if it's because most people now dress down so much I'm aware of how different I look in comparison.

Thank you for linking that website though. I think I'm going to order a few things from that and hell bunny in the morning!

porridgeisbae · 10/02/2024 23:05

@peoplearepeople Yay you go girl. SmileYep you don't need more of a similar coat. I think a claret is less self-consciousifying in a coat than a bright red.

My other similar site was https://www.heartsandroseslondon.com/ This is my fav of my dresses off there https://www.heartsandroseslondon.com/bianca-roses-halter-dress

Considering the abuses perpetrated by Oxfam workers against women and girls and the grotesquely large salaries 'earnt' by their high-ups, they aren't much better than Shein.

porridgeisbae · 11/02/2024 00:29

I spent decades charity shopping and my experience was there is often a compromise involved, because what is there is what is there. As I got older, this compromise became more pronounced.

I haven't tried shopping second hand/charity etc online though, so that's worth a go.

OP posts:
Attictroll · 11/02/2024 07:25

But the compromise in Shein is women working18 hours a day with no weekends and one day off a month. That without the v low pay and salary loss for tiny mistakes...I know others are bad but Shein can be avoided

porridgeisbae · 11/02/2024 10:39

Hi troops just to say I have cancelled my order and am going to try and do some online second hand shopping :)

I'd love to say it was for moral reasons but my theory is I can probably buy something that doesn't develop a hole within a few days this way Smile Will let you know if I find something interesting.

I think it’s more shocking that an adult woman is judging young girls for what they wear, personally

Flubadubba · 11/02/2024 11:20

If you're looking for new, then some.ofnyhe styles at Lady V London might fit the brief. They have regular sales to keep the cost down as well.

I'm not judging them, it's just fashion.

It's just a shame to me when their figures are the best they'll ever be in most cases and they're wearing thick sacks.

When I say young girls I mean like teens/late teens etc.

Maybe they think choosing what to wear has more to it than just showing off your figure.

They must do :)

Sounds pretty judgmental to me 🤷‍♀️ also very odd to comment on young girls’ figures!

DiamondGazette · 11/02/2024 13:57

So this thread has turned into a debate about ethical consumerism and body shaming, instead of party dresses for everyday wear? What a shame. I'm not saying buying cheap clothes made in sweatshops is a good thing either, before anyone jumps on me and wrestles me to the ground.

WhatAnswer · 11/02/2024 14:11

Hi porridgeisbae I know somebody who dresses like that year round! She wears Multi-coloured Opaque tights or bare legs. Funky handbags/clutch bags, fascinator type headbands/jeweled hats. She looks fabulous!

I'm a dresses person myself (Although I'm more of a Black with a colour & some sparkle added, for day-to-day) & get 90% of my stuff on eBay. Sometimes find a bargain in a Charity shop but it's hit & miss & the ones round here are very expensive.

Good luck with your shopping! I loved the Bright Pink one the bestSmile

What about with brightly colour tights

party look 24/7 :)
