This feels like a bad move by Liberty. I’ve been less impressed with the boxes as they’ve gone on and this year was the first since they started that I just wasn’t tempted by the advent calendar. They need to up their game with the products they’re offering imo. There’s now too many other companies doing boxes and it always seems to be the same old products (votary, and weird face masks, I’m looking at you.) the scents offered recently seem too masculine for me too. They missed a trick by not giving a full set of testers for their own new fragrances I think. It’s too much money to risk a blind buy, they really have put them at too high a price point. The way they’ve dressed this up as a service charge is underhand. You could always use the credit across everything. Might be the push I need to cancel the subscription.

Another76543 · 13/02/2024 14:42

I’m assuming 16 March is correct as that’s the 2nd email I’ve received.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 13/02/2024 14:43

I've had 2 emails - one stating my price won't go up until May as I'm within my first 3 months as a subscriber (not correct) and another stating the price will increase in March.

SwordBilledHummingbird · 13/02/2024 14:44

I'm really disappointed with the change, £5 per month is really steep. I'm going to sleep on it to give myself time to decide whether it's worth paying £15 per box (as it effectively will be), but will probably cancel once the next box has arrived. Oh and I also received two emails with two different dates.

Ducksinthebath · 13/02/2024 14:44

Ametora · 13/02/2024 14:40

I have just had a 2nd one as well- both with different dates

God, can’t even get that right.

Ap24 · 13/02/2024 14:36

So I've just received the update email. Am I right in thinking that the £5 service fee gives us no real benefits? We were always able to spend the credit across the site, free shipping was always a thing and we often received money off the advent calendar anyway?

They can stick it. I'm not paying £60 a year to have my money locked away, especially when I can often buy the things I want like fragrances cheaper elsewhere.

Yes, they were all benefits we had before, so it’s a bit rich of them to paint this as a new benefit, as if to lessen the blow of this service charge.

I’m torn. I know retail is struggling. I would hate for Liberty to go under (considering how the likes of John Lewis are making massive losses year on year, I can’t see how Liberty is faring much better). I do understand that they need to recoup some of the money they lose in free product and free shipping… but do I really want the Beauty Drop at a 25% price increase?

The scheme as it was was almost too good to be true - albeit forcing you to spend money with them when you could perhaps have found the same thing cheaper elsewhere.

I’m bummed. I understand why they’ve had to do it but it’s made an affordable luxury feel more like an expensive indulgence.

Ametora · 13/02/2024 14:45

DH commented a few weeks ago that it looks like they had financial issues- recurring 20-30% off on items that are still full price in other stores.

cujo · 13/02/2024 14:46

I've cancelled. I've got 24 months to use the credit so that's no problem for me.

I think the second email with the May date is only for people who are in the first three months of membership. If you are outside this I think the 16th March date is correct. My renewal is the 22nd of each month so it is set to auto cancel now after that payment is taken.

seathewayahead · 13/02/2024 14:46

I also had two messages. I think I’ll probably be cancelling unless the next box is substantially better than the previous few. I felt like money tied up vs trying new things was a fair exchange, but I don’t fancy paying £60 for the boxes and occasional free shipping. Better spend the credit. Weirdly the only things I’ve actually wanted to buy from the boxes haven’t been stocked by Liberty

Fleurchamp · 13/02/2024 14:46

What a shame!

I was only in there this morning spending some of my credit - I enjoyed going every couple of months and getting something "free" (I know it was my credit but it was money already spent).

My first email said that as I was in my first 3 months (I'm not) it would be honoured to May then the second came in saying March so I shall assume the earlier date.

Cancelling too. I rarely buy online from there so no point getting free shipping and I could always use the credit across the store anyway.

Correct. God, their emails are so shambolic 😂

RockaLock · 13/02/2024 14:47

I thought this thread would be busy today Grin

Like many of you, I'm not convinced that the boxes are worth £60 a year to me. Not when the beauty products that Liberty sell are usually to be found cheaper elsewhere.

I was OK with spending my credit there in return for the boxes - but not at that price.

I will also be cancelling. Now I just have to decide what to spend my remaining credit on, while I still have the free delivery...

ferretface · 13/02/2024 14:47

Looks like they had a universal issue with their mailing lists - someone will not be having a good day!

Effectively the price for the boxes is now going to be £15, which puts them in a similar sort of space to other beauty box subscriptions. I have to say I have enjoyed the Liberty boxes much more than other subscriptions I've had and genuinely found new products to buy. But I don't also want to lock £240 of my money away with Liberty per year as often the products I want to buy are cheaper elsewhere. Would rather just be able to subscribe to the drop at £60 per year.

ferretface · 13/02/2024 14:49

Ametora · 13/02/2024 14:45

Oh dear. I do hope they're OK financially. Liberty and Selfridges are the two department stores I'd really hate to lose.

BangingOn · 13/02/2024 14:49

I also received two emails, despite having subscribed since the start. Anyway, I have cancelled now as the boxes aren’t worth £15 each to me, plus Liberty have become increasingly erratic in terms of the range they stock and I can’t rely on them to have the items I want to spend my credit on.

Summerdew · 13/02/2024 14:49

I’m going to cancel after the next box too, it’s my birthday around then so will finish spending on the free postage as extra birthday treats. Such a mistake, they could have done an annual fee of say £15 to cover the postage of the boxes but this feels grabby.

You are not paying £60 for the boxes. It works out at £5 per box. It does look a bit steep.

Was there on Saturday and it was heaving. Lots of people actually shopping, not browsing.

Another76543 · 13/02/2024 14:51

I’m not sure this is a good move by them. Perhaps a couple of pounds extra a month, but I think £5 is steep. The only additional benefit we seem to be getting is 10% of beauty kits. Free delivery applies over £100 anyway. For beauty purchases under £100, places like Space NK offer free delivery on anything over £25, they stock many of the same brands, and offer the NDulge reward scheme. Also, Liberty is often out of stock of beauty items I want to buy.

Fleurchamp · 13/02/2024 14:51

I love Liberty though and would be totally gutted if they went.

I think if it were £2 or so I would suck it up but £5 seems a lot considering their online offering is poor and Amazon is only a couple of quid more a month for free delivery and a steaming service.

Edited

You get a £5 birthday voucher from the loyalty scheme

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 13/02/2024 14:51

Oh sorry, you are right.

Monthly increase. I would have been happy it it was per box, but £60 a year is a bit much.

BCSurvivor · 13/02/2024 14:51

I also feel that a £5 admin fee for each £20 monthly charge is really steep.
Particularly as the boxes can be quite hit and miss and filled out with eye masks.
It seems very short notice if this is coming in in March.
Particularly as all the additional new "perks" they mention...free shipping across everything in store, 10% off advent calendar and kits and spending vouchers on anything in store and not just beauty already exist!
I regularly use mine on fabric, so definitely not a new perk.
Disappointed in Liberty.

Yes it does

I missed the monthly bit, I thought it was per box.

No, it’s £5 per month extra. £60 a year for 4 boxes, ie £15 each.
