Eternity ring disappointment

DH and I have a big wedding anniversary this year and I wanted an eternity ring to mark the occasion. Our budget was around £1000.

I saw a ring I was interested in that I thought was just under £900 and one (different shop) that was just over £900. First ring platinum 12 diamonds, second white gold seven, slightly bigger, diamonds. First ring fit perfectly second would need sizing up.

Decided to go for original ring as was swayed by it being platinum and it fitting. Realised when I went to buy that I had been looking at wrong price (my mistake) and ring was actually £1400. Had spent all afternoon trying to choose and in a rush of madness, bought the ring. Completely out of character for me.

It’s a lovely ring but I just feel disappointed that (a) I bought something so expensive. I can justify spending more but would have to really love the ring (b) I think I prefer the second ring.

I would lose a lot to trade ring in. I could buy second ring and sell original but would have to put another £200 towards it.

I appreciate that I am lucky to be able to have this ring but we have saved for a long time and I have never had expensive jewellery before.

Not sure what I am asking just any thoughts appreciated.

Sorry so long!

Take it back?
why would you have to trade it in?
if they were both in the same shop would you not swap it

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 06/01/2024 14:12

You like it, just put all these other thoughts in the bin and be pleased with your lovely jewellery.

rubyslippers · 06/01/2024 14:12

It’s a horrible feeling that you think you’ve been rushed in something pricey

Daisychaingirls · 06/01/2024 14:20

I’m not sure the shop would have it back? They would buy it back but wouldn’t it be classed as second hand now?

Ask the shop if you can swap it for the ring you prefer. If it's unworn, it shouldn't be classed as secondhand, surely?

Ask the shop if you can swap it for the ring you prefer. If it's unworn, it shouldn't be classed as secondhand, surely?

The rings are in two separate shops.

platinum costs more. That’s why it cost more. To make you feel better: white gold is rhodium plated. Platinum retains its finish. Rhodium plated needs replating every so often. My 18 ct white gold wedding ring is pitted. It’s not attractive. I’m actually getting a new one. In platinum. You really do have the best product. It will last and look great for years.

NewYear24 · 06/01/2024 15:33

Is your wedding ring platinum or white gold?

The first thing I would do is check with the shop if they would refund you.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 06/01/2024 15:47

You could always ask the first shop if they will refund you. They have no obligation to do so but I'm a firm believer in "if you don't ask, you'll never get". As long as you accept "no" graciously.

If they say no, then you'll either just have to learn to love it or sell it and put the price towards the other one.

Daisychaingirls · 06/01/2024 16:01

Thanks for all the replies. I do think platinum is a better bet than the other ring so am happy with that but I just don’t love the ring. I think I would like larger diamonds. I am going to contact the shop and see what they can do. I doubt they will refund so best outcome is that they will allow me to exchange it for another ring.

I feel so foolish. It’s such a treat and a one time purchase and I am trying to convince myself to love it.

If the other ring was about 900, and uouve paid 1400 for this one, why would you need to put money to the second one?

Daisychaingirls · 06/01/2024 16:28

The second shop would buy my ring but I would have to pay the difference (they offered £700)

Obviously that’s a huge loss so not a good idea

Could you post a picture of your ring to let us see it please. I bet it is lovely.

Scarletttulips · 06/01/2024 16:36

I’d like to see it to.

I think that’s a very wearable ring. I’m wondering if you could swap it? Maybe the shop it came from has 18ct with bigger diamonds? I think that’s what I would ask.

Aphotoaday · 06/01/2024 18:11

I think it is lovely and what I would imagine an eternity ring looks like. However, it is what you think and feel that matters. I wish you health to wear whatever one you choose for a long long time.

TizerorFizz · 06/01/2024 18:17

This is mine. It’s got a decent array of diamonds, but I cannot get my engagement ring over it! Waiting for a replacement wedding ring. So sometimes a bit neater and wearable pays dividends.

I think if you'd bought the second, you'd be regretting not buying the platinum one. I'd keep the one you have tbh.

Fahrenheit111 · 06/01/2024 20:51

I think the platinum one is your best bet too. Have you been wearing it? If not, give it time I’m sure you will grow to love it. It’s probably just buyers remorse, I get it with any largish purchase.

Grimbelina · 06/01/2024 20:54

That ring looks lovely and the diamonds are a good scale for your finger. I can't imagine the other one looks better and you have all the upkeep with white gold.

How much have you worn it? How long ago did you buy it.
If it is recent and unworn then the shop should allow you to return or swap it the same as any other type of goods apart from earrings and underwear?! What makes you think they won’t?

OoohLaLaLa · 06/01/2024 20:58

Beautiful ring! I’d love something similar.
