Eternity ring disappointment

Daisychaingirls · 06/01/2024 14:07

DH and I have a big wedding anniversary this year and I wanted an eternity ring to mark the occasion. Our budget was around £1000.

I saw a ring I was interested in that I thought was just under £900 and one (different shop) that was just over £900. First ring platinum 12 diamonds, second white gold seven, slightly bigger, diamonds. First ring fit perfectly second would need sizing up.

Decided to go for original ring as was swayed by it being platinum and it fitting. Realised when I went to buy that I had been looking at wrong price (my mistake) and ring was actually £1400. Had spent all afternoon trying to choose and in a rush of madness, bought the ring. Completely out of character for me.

It’s a lovely ring but I just feel disappointed that (a) I bought something so expensive. I can justify spending more but would have to really love the ring (b) I think I prefer the second ring.

I would lose a lot to trade ring in. I could buy second ring and sell original but would have to put another £200 towards it.

I appreciate that I am lucky to be able to have this ring but we have saved for a long time and I have never had expensive jewellery before.

Not sure what I am asking just any thoughts appreciated.

Sorry so long!

This is a pre-owned platinum and half eternity ring with diamonds for £650. Reasonable sized stones.

@caringcarer that first ring is not unlike the OP's ring. It has just been photographed better.

Not sure carat weight of OP's ring but the first ring has 1.3 carats. The OP's ring looked smaller diamonds.

Daisychaingirls · 07/01/2024 00:53

My ring is .5 carat

Thanks for the links; some lovely rings.

I don’t think I will be able to get a refund on my ring but am going to ask the shop if they would let me swap it for something else.

I won’t be trading it in as I would lose too much so if swapping isn’t an option I’ll wear it and appreciate it and possibly change it in time if I still feel the same.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to add your comments. I know it’s hardly a real life problem (and I have a few of those, as do we all) but you’ve really helped.

I think the ring your bought is beautiful, it cost more because it's better quality, and you initially picked it because of that.

FrancisSeaton · 07/01/2024 09:41

Lol you say a ring looks tight and it gets deleted? Lmao

FrancisSeaton · 07/01/2024 09:43

LadyBird1973 · 06/01/2024 21:48

What on earth can someone say on an eternity ring thread, that's worthy of deletion? How can a jewellery thread go sideways?

I said another posters ring looked right. It does. They clearly got super upset about it and cried to admin as there's no way in the world that's a personal attack 🙄

LadyBird1973 · 07/01/2024 09:47

Thanks for coming back and satisfying my nosiness curiosity @FrancisSeaton

OP, if you do exchange your ring, please will you come back and show is what you chose?

Falkenburg · 07/01/2024 09:51

Go back to the shop and say that you are dissatisfied with the look and what are your options?

They may do nothing or they may suggest other rings etc. Until you ask, everything else is just speculation.

jiggyjiggyjig · 07/01/2024 13:14

@FrancisSeaton but you are correct. @TizerorFizz ring looks tight. It slightly painful to look at. Our fingers do get thicker with age and most people don't get their rings made bigger. It's really worth doing for something that is worn daily.

Agree.

Unless it was specially ordered or engraved I don't understand why you can't return it?

Don't call/go in on the back foot and act like you can't just take it back. Say you've changed your mind and want to return it and then say nothing else. Don't fill the silence or over explain, just zip it!

I also agree it's too tight.

Shops have no obligation to take goods back unless there is something wrong with it. She can ask for them to return it but she can't demand it and they can quite legitimately refuse

lavenderphase · 07/01/2024 13:51

@Notmetoo I know that but I also know that going in with the assumption you can't return jt almost certainly means they won't

lavenderphase · 07/01/2024 13:52

... won't offer to accept it back.

NewYearNewPyjamas · 07/01/2024 13:55

You should take it off and put it back in the box. At least ask the other shop if they will take it back. If it's clean, I can't see why they wouldn't.

Quite simply, it's just buyers remorse. I'm exactly the same. Any big purchase I make, I'm always uncertain if I made the right one and spend ages thinking about the what ifs. It ruins what should be an exciting purchase and moment.

You chose this one for a reason and it is lovely!!

I know I can't believe someone would get so emotional about it they would hit the report button

Daisychaingirls · 07/01/2024 15:04

I am planning to go back to the shop and just explain that I don’t love the ring and would like to exchange. I’m hoping that as it’s such a recent purchase they might let me swap.

I like the channel setting as it’s more practical for me (rather than a claw setting) and have decided that platinum is what I want so have now discounted the other ring. I think I just need to see if there is anything similar but with larger (so probably less) diamonds.

The shop isn’t a chain but an old fashioned jewellers who are happy to spend time with you so I’m sure they will do what they can.

Thank you for helping me feel better.

(The ring that people have discussed fit isn’t mine. A pp kindly put it on to show me).

Here’s another pic of mine. It’s definitely growing on me.

I think those are nice sized diamonds

Gcsunnyside23 · 07/01/2024 15:55

I love that ring OP, but no harm going and asking if possible exchange as you'll always wonder. You might even find that it'll still be your preference even if there's chance to change

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 07/01/2024 16:02

TizerorFizz · 06/01/2024 18:17

This is mine. It’s got a decent array of diamonds, but I cannot get my engagement ring over it! Waiting for a replacement wedding ring. So sometimes a bit neater and wearable pays dividends.

Ouch.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/01/2024 16:44

@Daisychaingirls that is beautiful - channel setting?

No pesky claws to catch .

TizerorFizz · 07/01/2024 16:45

@FrancisSeaton I did not report you. I know my ring is not tight. It’s just a poor photo and not flattering. I was just trying to show the setting to compare it to that owned by the op so she could think about alternative settings. I am not upset and really I’m not into reporting people. I’ve never done it.

Second hand full eternity rings are often good value because they cannot be sized.

Vitriolinsanity · 07/01/2024 17:05

I think it's better in photo 2. It might be a grower, but I think that's a risk with an important piece of jewellery.

I'd take it back. Independent jewellers are pretty savvy IME. As long as you're swapping it, I'd bet they won't quibble.
