Eternity ring disappointment

Daisychaingirls · 06/01/2024 14:07

DH and I have a big wedding anniversary this year and I wanted an eternity ring to mark the occasion. Our budget was around £1000.

I saw a ring I was interested in that I thought was just under £900 and one (different shop) that was just over £900. First ring platinum 12 diamonds, second white gold seven, slightly bigger, diamonds. First ring fit perfectly second would need sizing up.

Decided to go for original ring as was swayed by it being platinum and it fitting. Realised when I went to buy that I had been looking at wrong price (my mistake) and ring was actually £1400. Had spent all afternoon trying to choose and in a rush of madness, bought the ring. Completely out of character for me.

It’s a lovely ring but I just feel disappointed that (a) I bought something so expensive. I can justify spending more but would have to really love the ring (b) I think I prefer the second ring.

I would lose a lot to trade ring in. I could buy second ring and sell original but would have to put another £200 towards it.

I appreciate that I am lucky to be able to have this ring but we have saved for a long time and I have never had expensive jewellery before.

Not sure what I am asking just any thoughts appreciated.

Sorry so long!

How much have you worn it? How long ago did you buy it.
If it is recent and unworn then the shop should allow you to return or swap it the same as any other type of goods apart from earrings and underwear?! What makes you think they won’t?

It was only bought a few days ago and I’ve hardly worn it. I need to speak to the shop and see what they can do.

If you only purchased it a few days ago I’m sure the store will accept a return. At the very least you could exchange it for one in the style you prefer

Extremely uncomfortable

What on earth can someone say on an eternity ring thread, that's worthy of deletion? How can a jewellery thread go sideways?

Daisychaingirls · 06/01/2024 21:49

Thank you for all of your comments.

I think part of the reason I am feeling this way is because I hadn’t considered any rings at the price I ended up paying as it was over budget. I hadn’t looked at anything else at that price point and usually I like to shop around to make sure I’ve seen lots of choices. I think I’m worried that there is something nicer out there.

You talk as if you bought your own eternity ring 🤔

Retailers are under no obligation to accept a return or an exchange unless an item is faulty. Many do of course, but they don't have to.

LadyBird1973 · 06/01/2024 21:57

DH bought me an eternity ring for my 30th and I wore it, then lost quite a bit of weight. Because it couldn't be resized, the jewellers (Crouch's) took it back and swapped it for a smaller size. They were under no obligation to do so, but were really kind and helpful to do it, so it's possible the jeweller will let you exchange. A brand new, undamaged ring won't have lost value for them.

MyLibrarywasdukedomlargeenough · 06/01/2024 21:59

It’s been worn it is therefore secondhand I would imagine that you would be offered a third of its price. Secondhand jewellery does not hold its value.

@LadyBird1973 I’m sorry I missed that post as intrigued.

My husband bought me an eternity ring to mark our ruby wedding anniversary, it's white gold with diamonds alternating with rubies. It looks lovely and complements my wedding band and solitaire engagement ring.

I think when you're buying jewellery that you are going to wear always, it has to be perfect. I hope you can swap your ring for something you really love.

Floralnomad · 06/01/2024 22:16

@Daisychaingirls the ring is lovely and platinum is always expensive . @TizerorFizz I’d look at getting your ring resized as tight rings that cause a ‘muffin top’ can lead to problems .

TizerorFizz · 06/01/2024 22:22

@Floralnomad Thanks for the advice. It does look worse in the photo. It’s not tight. R

What metal are your wedding/engagement rings? If they are gold then you risk the platinum wearing them down by rubbing against them as the platinum is harder. Conversely if they are platinum and you buy a gold eternity ring it will eventually get worn down.

tothelefttotheleft · 06/01/2024 22:31

Do you have pictures of the other ring?

SallyWD · 06/01/2024 22:41

I chose my own engagement ring and bought it (brand new). I wore it for a couple of of days and decided I really didn't like it. The shop refunded me, no questions asked

BirthdayRainbow · 06/01/2024 22:56

When I changed my mind about a ring the shop eventually took pity on me and said if I paid £30 for it to be properly cleaned they would give me a refund.

TigerJoy · 06/01/2024 23:00

Anxiety can be the thief of joy.

You're worried you were impulsive with this ring. My mum was so obsessed with getting a bargain and I inherited it - constantly searching for a bargain can be exhausting and it ruined so many holidays for me - I was always worried I hadn't got enough of a bargain, that something else might have been better or cheaper.

You could go back to the original shop and ask if you can exchange for something with bigger stones for around the same price point - see what else they have at that, and if there's anything you prefer. They might give you a full refund - you won't know til you ask.

I think losing £700 to change for a very slightly different ring is completely bananas, personally.

You have a lovely ring which suits you. That's the important thing. Try not to let the fact you didn't scour every shop checking whether there was something slightly different sour you to the ring you have. It's lovely! You own it! I hope you can enjoy it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/01/2024 23:03

First ring fit perfectly second would need sizing up
How many sizes out was the second one ? It's only feasible to go up a couple especially with an eternity setting . So it might be a no-go anyway ..

LouLou198 · 06/01/2024 23:11

Stick with the platinum. White gold needs re-plating every few years. It looks lovely by the way!

squigglygiggly · 06/01/2024 23:29

If you really really don't love this ring then take it back. Ask them if you can return it and what alternatives have they got. If you don't love it now it will probably always have a slightly disappointing feel about it.

Daisychaingirls · 06/01/2024 17:58

Here is a pic

It is lovely OP. It fits perfectly and I'd keep it. Before you loved it. How do you know you won't change it for the other ring losing £800 in exchange and then paying another £200 and then you might not like the second ring. Why not just wait 5 years and then get a second eternity ring?

caringcarer · 06/01/2024 23:38

LadyBird1973 · 06/01/2024 21:48

? It stumped me too.

Lndnmummy · 06/01/2024 23:39

I think £1400 is expensive for what it is. Although a lovely ring I can see why you are hesitant. I think you could get a ring with substantially larger stones for that budget.

Have you looked at claw set eternity rings? They tend to pop more than channel set. With that setting the stones almost gets lost in the metal.

This is my platinum and diamond eternity ring. Also have you considered a pre owned ring from eBay. You will get a bargain as Nd many come with certificates of authenticity and are hallmarked. I often treat myself to a 9 carat gold pre used ring. I have a nice little collection now. None of them broke the bank and many come with insurance certificates too stating gem stone weight, size clarity of stone, etc.
