Blingy buttons
OTT logos
Embellishments like diamanté or pearls on things like tee shirts or jeans
Collars that look odd and don’t seem to go with the item of clothing.
Naff sayings/statements

Agree about low jeans pockets

And a mention for horizontal fade lines (I think it’s called whiskering?) on the thigh/hip crease of jeans. I don’t need that bit to look any wider thanks.

You are so right about the fade lines. I also think it makes it look like the jeans are too small on me and they are pulling. Also draws attention to that area and I try to detract attention from my hips.

TippiHedrin · 03/01/2024 23:32

Anything remotely military (camouflage, even in unrealistic colours, but also dog tags, cargo pockets and too many zips). For political as well as aesthetic reasons.

Britpopbaby · 03/01/2024 23:33

Boots with soles that you can’t take to a cobbler to get revealed or re soles is a massive one for me.

Almost everything mentioned and espadrilles

mathanxiety · 03/01/2024 23:59

Very gaping necklines.
Anything with a neckline that's low at the back.
Cutouts.
Legs that need a lot of taking up. I recently took seven inches off the bottom of a pair of jeans DD3 bought. She's 5' 6".
Logos that make me into a walking billboard.
'Dry clean only'. I've washed 'Dry clean' items so I'm willing to take a chance on those if the price is right.
'Dry flat'/ 'hang to dry' is pretty off-putting if the item is a T-shirt or something else I'll wear a lot.
Loose buttons.
Silly embellishments like bows or diamante.
Any pattern featuring butterflies. I like birds though.
Any pattern with hearts.
Red or yellow clothes. Can't wear those colours.
Wool apart from fine merino.

mathanxiety · 04/01/2024 00:21

YY to Disney themes on clothing. Big no-no.

Havingablast · 04/01/2024 14:11

Dresses which have huge parts of the back gauged out (ok if you're young and flat chested but a PITA if you need to wear a bra).

Sweatshirts with hoods (why is it that hoods seem to be compulsory, anyway?)

KirstenBlest · 04/01/2024 14:20

@RobertaFirmino , if you search for gorgeous or stunning, the results are usually something like a mediocre Papaya jersey dress or bobbly M&Co acrylic cardigan.

Gold trim like zips, buttons and toggles

useitorlose · 04/01/2024 14:21

Cropped sleeves, trouser legs or bottom hems
Random holes
Misspelt slogans/text or offensive or suggestive text
Rear zips you have to dislocate your arm for
Floor length dresses or trousers that are supposed to be regular length but would need altering (especially if the design means it can't be shortened without looking odd)
Big flowery prints
Lurid colours
Big sleeves
Low necklines that show your bra or too much flesh (don't have a cleavage!)

Ineedanewsofa · 04/01/2024 14:32

The stupid tiny button to elastic loop fastening at the back of the neck that seems to feature on a lot of women’s tops (I’m looking at you, H&M!) way too fiddly for me!

StoneTheCrone · 04/01/2024 15:36

Balloon sleeves
Shoulder frills
chest frills
Neck frills
Frills in general!
Floral anything
Ruching
Smocking
Glitter/Diamante
Breast pockets
Fake or tiny/useless pockets
A boxy cut
Oversizing
Gaudy gold buttons
Poor craftsmanship
Poor material

Ive said this before and I'll say it again, the whole muted/sludge colourway that's going in in clothes at the moment doesnt suit me at all.

totalnamechanger · 04/01/2024 15:36

What’s Cruisewear- Dinner with the Captain, SwedishEdith? 😄 I need pictures!

While I accept a lot of things on this thread, I love a batwing 🤩 Also considering a dress with a zip all the way down in a sale. Somebody stop me!

EvelynBeatrice · 04/01/2024 15:46

High necks. Polyester and horrible fabrics. Bad hems/ cheap looking visible stitching ( looking at your skirts Hobbs!).
So many of the 'better' high street brands now use cheap fabrics - I've never found an acrylic jumper that washes well, for example- so why pay more to buy from there when supermarket or lower end brands do same design and fabric for lower cost.
Sizing is odd in some places too. Monsoon small in some tops is huge. I'm now probably what was a 12 in the 90s. Some Monsoon things drown me! No hope of my slender daughters finding any top to fit there. The dresses seem fine bizarrely.

Precipice · 04/01/2024 15:55

Frills anywhere.
Low necklines (including scoop and v-neck - I want the neckline around my collarbones).
Weird cutouts, like if you've finally given women some more fabric in the sleeves or neckline, you now have to save it from somewhere else.
Cap sleeves.
Polyester and generally synthetics.
No pockets for trousers. Fake pockets for anything - either put pockets or don't. Don't pretend that you have.
The 'triangle' cut of tops - my hips are only a bit wider than my bust, so it ends up widening out too much and looks very unflattering.
Ankle trousers - even normal full length trousers are often too short for me. Don't make them deliberately even shorter!
Anything cropped. Kill it with fire. Again, a lot of full length tops can be too short, don't make it harder yet to find stuff.
Sludge colours. That grey heather colour. I dye clothes sometimes to colours I prefer, but the 'pattern' of that persists.

Precipice · 04/01/2024 15:55

Oh, and logos too. I avoid even small ones if possible, but I'll tolerate them.

StoneTheCrone · 04/01/2024 16:05

Elasticated waists on trousers. Especially expensive trousers that look great, and then you see the photo of the back and there it is...

This.

I hate it. It makes the back bulky and ruins what should be a sleek silhouette and a slim-fitting garment. I look like a toddler in elasticated waist trousers.

Another one here keen to see the 'dinner at the captain's table' cruise-wear! Snort.

Userxyd · 04/01/2024 23:03

Cardigans with no belt
Girls t shirts with naff patronising slogans like Be kind/Rainbow love/ I ❤️ smiles etc

purplespeck · 04/01/2024 23:06

Ineedanewsofa · 04/01/2024 14:32

Anything with these buttons with elastic loops at the back of the neck, but for me it’s because my hair gets stuck in them!

KirstenBlest · 05/01/2024 11:15

@EvelynBeatrice , M&S acrylic tends to look ok and wash well.

rainbowbee · 05/01/2024 11:44

Pointless useless tiny pockets, especially on the fronts of shirts.
Visible zips. Put them in properly.
Sizing all over the place in different shops.
Generic live laugh love type slogans on t shirts etc.
Bows for no reason.
What look like decent trousers but then have a drawstring so you'd look like a bag of potatoes.
Random holes.

DelphiniumBlue · 05/01/2024 12:47

Puffy shoulders or sleeves, sleeves that are wide at the bottom so that they drape into the washing up, high round necklines.
Obviously polyester or any scratchy/sweat- inducing fabric, or anything itchy like mohair.
HiLo hemlines, or anything much above the knee these days.
Light coloured tops especially woollen ones - I seem to attract dirt and spillages.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 05/01/2024 13:50

Bell sleeves. Awful things that end up covered in soup or dishwater.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 05/01/2024 15:50

As with many PPs:

Dry-clean only unless coat/party-wear/dark skirt

Anything that makes me look more booby, so crew necks, dropped or raglan shoulders, tunics (hang off the boobs), breast pockets

Anything I can't wear a bra with.

Anything 100% polyester and more than £100 - are you having a laugh?

Anything with a 'cool mum at the school gates' vibe (not because there is anything wrong with being a mum at the school gates but the "I am still a little bit rock-and-roll even though I now have mini boxes of raisins in my bag" look is cringe).

Balloon sleeves - I actually quite like the look but I live in the UK so I need cardigan-compatibility.

DeadButDelicious · 05/01/2024 15:54

I can put up with a lot of things put strappy dresses/tops where the straps aren't adjustable really annoy me and the lack of pockets. Even worse is fake or rubbish pockets. Don't lure me in with talk of pockets and then have them be virtually useless.

Petrine · 05/01/2024 17:12

Recycled fabrics
cropped wide leg trousers and jeans
ruching and shirring
footwear which has massive clumpy soles
bright colours
frills
plastic footwear
polyester
