Blingy buttons
OTT logos
Embellishments like diamanté or pearls on things like tee shirts or jeans
Collars that look odd and don’t seem to go with the item of clothing.
Naff sayings/statements

OP posts:
LonelyAndLostToo · 03/01/2024 18:09

Gaudy prints and bright patterns
No shape, literally swathes of material that make you look like a potato sack
Linen & heavy cotton, they never look right again after first wash and iron
Anything with sewn in seams or texture
Bling and fur/fake fur embellishments

The reasons for smothering children's clothes in slogans is that is cheaper than sewing on any trims that may make the garment more interesting.
Often the designs will start out with perhaps cuffs, zips, buttons, contrast trims ... then they are stripped out to save on production costs. So in order to give the garment some element of "interest" (otherwise it would be very plain), the cheapest way is to print a slogan on it.

I would be totally down with just plain coloured T-shirts for my 3 year old than printing ‘mischief maker’ or something across them.

CatMum000 · 03/01/2024 18:12

if the dress will go on without undoing upper buttons, try sewing the seam together near the bust. No more pop-opens or gaps when you stretch.

DancingFerret · 03/01/2024 18:16

Anything with a pattern at the front and a plain back; it just screams cheap.

(Actually, anything with a pattern.)

Easipeelerie · 03/01/2024 18:16

Someone beat me to it with puffy shoulders. They’re a cheap way to add detail but for many of us they just look like ridiculous clown like epaulettes.
Vents on the sides of jumpers- no need to make me look any more middle aged than I already do.
Those silly strings that hang off cheap M and S blouses.
cheap t shorts with the shoulders cut out.
Square necklines

Easipeelerie · 03/01/2024 18:17

Sparkly Christmas sacks for the works do.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 03/01/2024 18:19

Frill, tiers and lace.
Waist ties that tie in a bow at the back.
Logos
Lace up detail.
Cold shoulder.
Batwing sleeves.
Tight sleeves.
Neon.
Big patterns.
Sticky out skirts.

it’s a wonder I’ve got anything to wear.

Echobelly · 03/01/2024 18:21

High wool content (allergic!)
Ugly buttons
Waistbands that fit but are very rigid (tend to give me stomach cramps)
Shiny fabric
Tops that are supposed to be about waist length but actually finish somewhere round my hips
Linen or anything that will need loads of ironing
Horizontal stripes on the waistline (the last bit I should draw attention to)

Waitingfortulips · 03/01/2024 18:24

Lately I have spent very little as I avoid puffy shoulders. I have broad shoulders are puffiness does not help. Most blouses and dresses are out.

CrepuscularCritter · 03/01/2024 18:27

Floral patterns so enormous I look as though I have been upholstered rather than dressed
Frills, flounces, peplums, tiers
Poorly cut necklines that bunch and gape
Rotating skirts, where the zIp ends up on a part of your waist it shouldn't see every time you dare to take a step or two
Anything itchy.

inquisitiveinga · 03/01/2024 18:28

Anything that isn't made sustainably and fairly. I don't mind a charity shop as I'm not outright funding the crooked ways of the world.

Watch The True Cost (I believe its on YouTube, amongst others). It'll really put into perspective how embellishments/dimontes etc are not a problem in the clothing industry in comparison to how they're made 98% of the time.

Also, for the record yes, I know they "need to earn a living", but it's hardly fair when you take the time to sit back, watch and acknowledge the utter horror that the people that make our clothes live in on a daily basis.

Glasgowgal200 · 03/01/2024 18:30

Frilly collars, tight around the waist, too short top(like to cover my bottom & tummy), weird shaping, too long dress length, dry clean only,

faustus5 · 03/01/2024 18:32

Polyester

1stWorldProblems · 03/01/2024 18:35

Fabrics that'll need ironing to look good - only exception is satin evening dresses.
Logos.
Fake pockets - why?
Fake drawstrings on trousers.
Animal prints.
Fabrics so thin / cheap that your undies show through (cheap leggings esp bad).
Skin coloured items.

MakemineaGandT · 03/01/2024 18:44

First thought was ‘blingy buttons’ - which turned out to be your first thought too OP! Mint Velvet are particularly bad for this.

I always check fabric very carefully - it’s an immediate ‘no way José’ to acrylic and polyester.

These days it’s a no to heels over 8cm. Just can’t walk in them without looking silly.

I’ll never again buy a fake leather handbag.

And I hate star motifs - just a bit….naff.

TheOGCCL · 03/01/2024 18:44

Acrylic
Polyester
Black
Sleeveless
Anything where a bra is problematic
'Weak necklines'
Cut outs esp bust and shoulders
High waisted
Paper bag waists

Gettingcolder · 03/01/2024 18:50

Polyester
Bling/neon/shiny fabric
Tops that are too short
Anything too fitted at the waist
Frilly/puffy stuff
Need for dry cleaning unless wool jacket/coat etc.

MrsDoylesCardigan · 03/01/2024 18:52

Zips which are the road to nowhere.

What is the point of being able to open and close that particular bit of fabric? I'm not a sodding Fisher Price activity centre.

SoOutingWhoCares · 03/01/2024 18:59

I HATE buttons.

Sometimes they are unavoidable, but anything with those huge buttons or miltary style with excessive buttons are a no no.

I absolutely hate the chunky style cardigans with massive buttons that are everywhere right now.

Also hate shirts so those 2 in 1 shirt jumper or shirt dress things quite literally make me want to vomit. I had a lot of sensory issues around school uniform as a child so I think it's all related to that.

GellerYeller · 03/01/2024 19:08

Yes! Shirts sewn into jumpers, why?!!!
Inspirational slogans that use SHOUTY CAPITALS: ‘BE KIND💕!!’ I want to shout ‘F off’ back at these in the shop. You’d never see that in the menswear section either would you…
Bardot tops. Make everyone, except the very teeny, have the shoulders of a rugby player. And they ping up when you lift your arms.
Some items will say dry clean only as a legal loophole when they’ve not tested the item/fabric for washing. Lots of things can still be washed, using common sense, obviously.

user1497787065 · 03/01/2024 19:10

Any knitwear containing no wool priced at £80 and above.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/01/2024 19:10

Weak necklines😂😂

GellerYeller · 03/01/2024 19:11

Also-I’m looking at you, Next- tops with a cotton/silk style front and a jersey t shirt back.
Trousers or sleeves that have no business being cropped. Especially winter wear. Nope.

ScarlettSunset · 03/01/2024 19:14

Trousers that are not long enough (which is true of lots of places at the moment). They make me look like a hobbit.

Agree with the dry cleaning of normal clothes being a pain. Recently bought a lovely blouse online that said it was machine washable but when it arrived said dry clean only.

Double breasted jackets. They suit some people but I'm not one of them.

Stringagal · 03/01/2024 19:14

Nice looking jumpers/hoodies that have huge graphics printed on the back.

Gold anything

Ruffles and frills.

Crew necks (they just make my head look weird)

Patterns that don’t match up at the seams
