Do you get your nails done?

innocentdevil77 · 09/12/2023 15:18

Just that. I'm not allowed my nails done for my new job and it sounds so trivial but it really gets me down!

Do you get yours done or do you usually have them natural?

OP posts:

I do but my natural nails crumble

ImTheGoat · 09/12/2023 15:26

I almost always have mine natural and on the rare occasions I’ve had them done I end up regretting it because it ruins my nails. I’ve noticed a lot more women with natural nails lately also and I am starting to think the trend of having them done (i.e. with gel) is dying out.

UngratefulOldCabbage · 09/12/2023 15:41

I use nail wraps from Holy Grail Nail. I've got the top coat and remover. Only cost a few pounds a set and can be removed easily in 10 minutes with the remover. I'm also not allowed them for work so these work great for the odd long weekend or holiday when I want nice nails.

What does this even mean?!

Teapleasemilknosugar · 09/12/2023 15:49

I agree with your new company. Neat cuticle, short and rounded natural nails, maybe even with a lick of clear gloss, but that's it. Anything more, IMO, is unprofessional.

Also agree with a PP, on the rare occasion I had mine done, my nails felt awful after, like the entire top surface layer had been filed off with the roughest sandpaper!

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 09/12/2023 15:56

I get the occasional mani pedi for cuticle care and shaping but stick to clear polish.
the filing of my fingernail tops during the gel application wrecks them for months down the line.
btw clear includes some nice light pink tint.

vestedinterests · 09/12/2023 16:05

I get my done but only got into it recently. I think short nails with gel/ biab in french, nude or classic red look professional and disagree that employer should dictate natural nails with clear polish or no polish (unless working in care/ with food/ in health care setting and the likes). I get them done as I have practically stopped wearing make up but want to look 'more done'

WashItTomorrow · 09/12/2023 16:06

I have mine natural.

LoobyDop · 09/12/2023 17:23

No. I used to occasionally, but my nails grow fast and it only looked good for about a week. Added to the damage done by removing them, I decided it wasn’t worth it. I do them myself if I’m going out, but just normal polish, not gel, and I only ever do the palest sheer pink. Anything darker either chips or I go off the colour straight away.

Ponderingwindow · 09/12/2023 17:28

I can’t due to allergies. I used to love having them done. Never did anything garish, just a conservative color on a short well-manicured nail.

Decimbir · 09/12/2023 17:31

No and i hate having to touch other people’s fake nails in shops etc. I think painted nails can look nice but thick plasticky fake nails set my teeth on edge.

AndromacheAstyanax · 09/12/2023 17:32

I’ve had them done twice in my life, so never got used to the feeling. They used to feel heavy and conspicuous to me. Also as I have short nails (for piano playing) the gelled nail look didn’t look right on me. Fine on other people!

Precipice · 09/12/2023 17:33

I've never had fake nails and don't like how they look on others.

Rockfordpeach · 09/12/2023 17:35

Yes but I don't get extensions, just BIAB over my natural nail and shaped nicely and painted

minipie · 09/12/2023 17:37

Just had mine done for maybe the second time ever. I agree with a pp who says it feels too conspicuous, I keep looking down and thinking eek what’s that on my hands 😆 Mostly I have rather scruffy natural nails.

I get toes done about 4 x a year, before a party or holiday. Then let them grow out.

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 09/12/2023 17:37

I have BIAB and one colour and I love them. If I look like a bag lady in every other respect some days, I at least look 'put together' in that department 🤣

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/12/2023 17:52

No. I quite like plain, painted, short nails, but they chip easily, so I rarely bother. I dislike gel nails - I think they look thick and plasticky, though some of the actual designs are attractive (for special occasions). Apparently they damage your real nails too, and I wouldn’t want to spend money on something like thay regularly.

I recently bought some nice nude nail polish, which is slightly nicer than just clear, but subtle enough for work and not so obvious when the edges wear away a little. I paint my toenails in summer.

I get BIAB too and keep my nails short. I feel naked without them!! I don't like multilayers as I don't like it when they're too thick so my nail tech puts fewer layers on.

I hate my hands because they're very swollen with arthritis and it helps me to tolerate them.

I'm a professional and most of my colleagues have their nail done too. I think it's silly and very old fashioned for people to regard them as not looking professional!! I think nice nails look well groomed.

Ykn · 09/12/2023 18:03

I don't enjoy having manicures especially Shellac and gel manicures, so I do my own fingernails and often get compliments on them, especially when they are fakes with French or nude paint, or natural in a particular shade of red.

I usually get my pedicures done professionally though.

Ardith · 09/12/2023 18:06

No. I think fake acrylic nails look really stupid. I don’t mind nail varnish but it ruins the the gleam of natural healthy nails so I only do it very occasionally on holiday.

Natural nails of a healthy person look way nicer than any fake plastic painted on. It’s a bit like how people with botox foreheads or inflated lips think they look good but can’t see themselves how others see them.

Milliemoos5 · 09/12/2023 18:06

I’ve only started having them done in the past year or so and now can’t imagine not having them done! But I like them plain and neat (normally a red type colour) rather than nail art/glitter etc etc. I also found when I had them done too long I couldn’t pick things up off the table and struggled to type! So now they are just a medium length which I’m happy with.

NoraLuka · 09/12/2023 18:09

I’ve never had my nails done, keep thinking I should do it but it’ll probably be out of fashion by the time I get around to it! I don’t like having long nails anyway, always keep them trimmed as short as possible. Maybe it doesn’t look well groomed but I’m ok with that.

Thekormachameleon · 09/12/2023 18:13

Yep, I get gel polish every 3 weeks

MaloneMeadow · 09/12/2023 18:14

I used to get gels regularly put finally stopped a few months ago. I feel like after you get them done once it’s a gateway drug as they look so awful and feel weak once the gel is taken off. I was just getting them done in the end because I felt I had to, not because I wanted them! I don’t miss them and am enjoying saving the £70 a month that I would’ve spent on them. It’s taken ages for my previously strong nails to fully recover but i’m finally getting there

sunshineandshowers21 · 09/12/2023 18:15

i always have gel polish on my fingers and toes, normally get them done every four weeks. my sister in law does them for me for free in exchange for me doing her childcare and tax bills. i love having different colours and very rarely have the same colour twice. right now they’re a lovely sparkly festive red.
