Do you get your nails done?

Just that. I'm not allowed my nails done for my new job and it sounds so trivial but it really gets me down!

Do you get yours done or do you usually have them natural?

OP posts:
Pbjammy · 09/12/2023 22:42

Always natural, kept short and naturally shaped. I look after them and they're in pretty good condition now. I rarely paint them and if I do, I do it myself with a glossy clear topcoat or neutral nude/pink.
I've had gels a handfull of times in my life eg. as a bridesmaid and for a few holidays. Regretted it every time, ruined my nails.

I think nail styling is a class marker

Wendyspotatopeeler · 09/12/2023 22:59

I love my acrylics. I've had a lot of trial and error with different technicians and have found an excellent nail tech who does some very intricate nail art. I don't like mine too thick or long but I love pretty colours that last longer than a few days. I have some festive nails on at the moment in pink white and gold with snowflakes, candy cane stripes and present bows. I'm thinking of navy and gold for New Year.

There’s truth in that

Moveoverdarlin · 09/12/2023 23:13

My nails are always long and painted but I do them myself. Never had my nails done.

mimiku · 09/12/2023 23:16

I used to get acrylics done religiously back when I was cabin crew. Fell out of the habit when I had my eldest and left flying. Moved onto gel polish treatments for a while but I found they kept coming off after a week so I stopped bothering. Nail varnish I always manage to smudge or chip instantly.

I treated myself to acrylics for going on holiday this September, when I went back to work after holiday the sound of my nails on the keyboard and the feeling of typing with them made me feel physically sick. I won’t be bothering again, I’ll stick to my ugly natural nails 😊

I love mine too. I know they are thought of on here as tacky/chavvy/working class (shock horror!), which is funny because I’m not any of those things 🤷‍♀️ apart from the nails. I do spend stupid amounts of money on them though.

Yours sound lovely- do you feel like sharing a picture? I haven’t had my Christmas ones done yet.

EveWinter · 10/12/2023 07:14

I’ve had a spell of having gel nails done, once painted it is too easy to go back and have them done again (to get it off).

After about five months my nails are ruined, brittle, uneven and awful. I’m going to stop, natural nails all the way here going forward. The condition of my nails will take a few months to get over it.

I use nail wraps from Holy Grail Nail. I've got the top coat and remover. Only cost a few pounds a set and can be removed easily in 10 minutes with the remover. I'm also not allowed them for work so these work great for the odd long weekend or holiday when I want nice nails.

Same here, i also use lily and fox

Who gives a fuck ?? Currently sporting glittery acrylics and love them

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/12/2023 08:35

Can I ask a question, having read through loads of these ?

When posters say about gel nails ruining their nails ....

Are gel nails the ones where you paint and they go under a LED (or similar) light to cure the gel. Then it gets removed with acetone .
Is the the removal that does the damage ?

Or are you talking about the nail being built up . /lengthened

Not acrylic because that's a nail stuck on then it is infilled until it has to be removed (which I know causes damage usually in removal )

TIA

I agree with your new company. Neat cuticle, short and rounded natural nails, maybe even with a lick of clear gloss, but that's it. Anything more, IMO, is unprofessional.

Also agree with a PP, on the rare occasion I had mine done, my nails felt awful after, like the entire top surface layer had been filed off with the roughest sandpaper!

Unprofessional how? In every single job?! I have mine done as they break and flake off otherwise. I don't have them really long.

Probably the same sort of person who thinks all tattoos should be covered for work, piercings should be removed other than one pair of plain studs, and hair should be a natural colour.

With the exception of nail technicians, yes!

Like I said, neat, tidy and cared for nails are fine IMO. You're allowed to disagree though - couldn't tell if you do? It sounds like you fall into the 'cared for' nails category which would be professional IMO, if you understood my post.

Yep.

This attitude makes me very happy that I don’t have to work so I’m free to be as unprofessional as I like!

Although in my actual career (social work) I’ve had colleagues with nails, hand tattoos, made up crazy names, mad hair etc. Unless we are in court giving evidence it doesn’t do to look too buttoned up and conservative- it tends to get right up service users noses because they feel you can’t possibly understand their lives.

They are lovely. Mine are much longer and tackier.

Aworldofmyown · 10/12/2023 09:59

I've been having mine done regularly for 18 months, My nail tech is excellent, lots are not!
I currently have very festive nails at the moment 😀

Tinyant · 10/12/2023 10:08

Yes every 3-4 weeks, usually in a very very natural gel (biosculpture) due to job and being “professional”. Short natural nail, most wouldn’t know I’ve got gel on them but it makes a big difference to my hands and stops my nails breaking

OneForTheRoadThen · 10/12/2023 10:13

I have a pedicure and shellac monthly but only get my hands done for Christmas and holidays. I can't afford it and it ruins your natural nails.

Wendyspotatopeeler · 10/12/2023 10:30

LOL at having nails done being unprofessional 🤣. I can understand it for surgeons but there are a lot of professions out there.

WashItTomorrow · 10/12/2023 10:34

I don’t do my nails, because it brings attention to my hands, which I don’t like.

Peepshowcreepshow · 10/12/2023 10:43

I sometimes paint my nails but haven't had them "done" for years. I think the nail art, long nail look is quite dated now.

VelvetVoice · 10/12/2023 10:54

My nails are different colours when natural and the skin on my hands look awful so a professional well done shellac makes me feel better and more stylish

Cantbeardarknights · 10/12/2023 11:05

shellac over very short nails, think cut down as far as possible. Usually in a red or rouge noir kind of colour, never sparkly, never any design and I think it looks extremely professional and identical to nail polish, just lasts.
