Fred looked very emotional out on the balcony!

Picture of the day for me.

He's still got those friendship bracelets on under his gloves!

Choux · 14/01/2024 14:30

Lovely outfit but she is really leaning away from him! Looks like he's about to pat her bottom too.

One from his Mexican friend?

I thought Mary looked very strained.

White's a good colour though she really stands out.

Fred was very emotional.

Lunde · 14/01/2024 15:06

I like Mary's outfit

Yes, she looked very elegant.

Mary does look very elegant. I also like the colour of Daisy's outfit, though didn't see much of it.

That kiss photo is the very definition of awkward.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 14/01/2024 16:33

IMO the kiss was natural, happy and no awkwardness at all. I didn't see anything that indicated she was strained! But I've not pored over the footage yet.

A few takeaways from watching the footage of today’s events.

Firstly, never underestimate the importance of rehearsals. Everyone looked like they weren’t sure what was going to happen next once Daisy signed the abdication document. From her and Fred gesturing about who should sit at the head of the table, to Christian dashing around to give her her cane, to her leaving the room straightway while everyone remained seated - it all looked like they’d not remotely rehearsed how it would all work in practice. Maybe they hadn’t - presumably not everyone is as prepared as the BRF for these kind of things (we hear that the Palace had prepared a video for Charles and William to watch on the night after the Queen’s death so they’d know exactly what to expect at the Accession proclamation).

Secondly, I thought Mary very much had her game face and attitude on at the first balcony appearance. Fred was emotional, and she was very supportive - holding his hand, leaning into him for a wave, kissing him (after looking like she was checking to see if their children were watching!). She didn’t look spontaneously affectionate, but it didn’t look forced either (to my eyes at least). I noticed she had Christian in the middle between the two of them on their second appearance which could be sold as good optics, even if that wasn’t the reason for it. And she had Isabella next to her, as together they were a perfect Danish flag image - again, good optics even if that wasn’t the reason…

Thirdly, both parents were very supporting of Princess Josephine - Mary kept her very close on the first balcony, and Fred again on the second. Poor thing, it could well be very overwhelming when you’ve just turned 13 (and apparently she’s just had braces fitted too, so probably feeling super self-conscious).

Serenster · 14/01/2024 16:39

Photos only capture a millisecond of course, but it was them doing things like this that made me feel that they weren’t being awkward or forced.

I think Queen Mary looked fabulous.

Fred though is distinctly lacking in the regal department, he always manages to look slightly uncomfortable. I have this look too so I sympathise with him. I'd have been a very poor Queen, always fidgeting and putting holes in my stockings.

justasking111 · 14/01/2024 17:33

Lovely pictures. Is there a dinner?

themessygarden · 14/01/2024 18:28

Oh wow, Mary looks stunning, I love her dress, very regal and modern.

That photo is very sweet.

I loved Frederick doing a double hand wave - can’t quite see any of our stuffy lot doing that!

Maireas · 14/01/2024 18:40

I thought the children looked lovely. Especially Isabella in her red outfit.

Queen Mary looked great today, as did Queen Margrethe. It was quite touching seeing how emotional Fred was on the balcony. I wonder if there will be any further celebrations?

hopeishere · 14/01/2024 19:11

I think there's a reception and a church service in the next few weeks.

Eaumyword · 14/01/2024 20:45

Mary looks great, very elegant.

Lunde · 14/01/2024 21:49

I noticed that Queen Margrethe used a walking stick when she left the room after the abdication. I wonder if her back pain is pretty bad but like QEII she didn't want to be seen with health issues while Queen.

I liked Mary's simple, Greek-style dress and understated jewellery. Was that a brooch/stomacher on Mary's dress or was it part of the dress?

paradyning · 14/01/2024 22:07

Think she was wearing some of the ruby parure. The hair clips were definitely from it

justasking111 · 14/01/2024 22:09

When she left the room Daisy was alone I thought it very poignant.
