A few takeaways from watching the footage of today’s events.
Firstly, never underestimate the importance of rehearsals. Everyone looked like they weren’t sure what was going to happen next once Daisy signed the abdication document. From her and Fred gesturing about who should sit at the head of the table, to Christian dashing around to give her her cane, to her leaving the room straightway while everyone remained seated - it all looked like they’d not remotely rehearsed how it would all work in practice. Maybe they hadn’t - presumably not everyone is as prepared as the BRF for these kind of things (we hear that the Palace had prepared a video for Charles and William to watch on the night after the Queen’s death so they’d know exactly what to expect at the Accession proclamation).
Secondly, I thought Mary very much had her game face and attitude on at the first balcony appearance. Fred was emotional, and she was very supportive - holding his hand, leaning into him for a wave, kissing him (after looking like she was checking to see if their children were watching!). She didn’t look spontaneously affectionate, but it didn’t look forced either (to my eyes at least). I noticed she had Christian in the middle between the two of them on their second appearance which could be sold as good optics, even if that wasn’t the reason for it. And she had Isabella next to her, as together they were a perfect Danish flag image - again, good optics even if that wasn’t the reason…
Thirdly, both parents were very supporting of Princess Josephine - Mary kept her very close on the first balcony, and Fred again on the second. Poor thing, it could well be very overwhelming when you’ve just turned 13 (and apparently she’s just had braces fitted too, so probably feeling super self-conscious).
