When she left the room Daisy was alone I thought it very poignant.

I suppose there is no real precedent for what to do at an abdication. I've read that the last time it happened in Denmark was in 1146. It was a bit odd that Daisy just signed and then it was "bye - see you later". I wonder whether Daisy chose it that way to make it clear that Frederick was now King as it might have been awkward with both there.

I loved Frederick doing a double hand wave - can’t quite see any of our stuffy lot doing that!

There was a touch of ‘ Hugh Grant as PM’ with the double wave. He did look well in the suit although could have shaved as per

loved Mary’s whole ensemble.

Christian needed a better fitting suit . I thought that young man must be feeling the hand of history on his shoulder today as he watched his father’s accession.

bizzey · 14/01/2024 23:25

So glad someone has mentioned Christians suit ..

I just lurk and enjoy ...and don't feel like I should comment...but goodness me !!

Surely they had enough time to check it fitted properly.

His brothers didn't fit properly either. !

I think I read that Prince Christian was holding ex queen's stick and he handed it to her .

Would have been nice if he had escorted her out .

I think that somethings may have appeared rushed, unrehearsed or unprepared because of the very short timescale. By all accounts Frederick and Mary were told 3 days before the NYE announcement ... so had 18 days to sort clothing - around 12 working days at a time when much shuts down after Christmas and New Year. Fred had Uniform to fall back on, I wonder if Mary's dress was originally planned for something else - NYE ball perhaps?

Having read a little about Daisy last night - I think it was additionally poignant because she chose her abdication date to be the same date as her own succession to the throne - January 14th.

Her father, Frederik IX, died unexpectedly. Shortly after he made the New Year speech he was taken ill with influensa symptoms and later suffered a heart attack. Although initially he seemed to improve, his condition suddenly deteriorated on January 11th and he died on January 14th 1972.

Mary, Fred, Daisy and Joachim on visiting Parliament today in snowy Copenhagen.

Fred really needs new suits or a new tailor

I do like Mary's blue dress on the visit to parliament.
She looks great.
They are lethal heels in what looks like hailstones.
She's a brave woman wearing them.
I'd probably fall flat on my face in them in that weather. Smile
What fur is Daisy wearing?
Her bag has some small insignia on the front- does anyone know what brand it is ?

paradyning · 15/01/2024 12:37

Love the dress. And then cobalt colour.
The hat is very 90s Sophie.
Been reliably informed Fred's watch is an Omega Seamaster professional 300m. Same as Bond.

Lunde · 15/01/2024 12:51

Is Mary wearing a dress or a suit? I can't decide. The top looks a bit like a jacket with peplum.

I like that Daisy didn't remove her warm fur hat even indoors.

Mary looks lovely today. I still think it's a bit odd the whole abdication thing, but I doubt they're bothered about what the likes of us think so I won't dwell on it.

I was reading that last night. Henrik had a wobble when Daisy put her son before him, buggered off to France. Our Queen made it quite clear that Philip was higher in the pecking order than Charles which we accepted. Daisy missed a step there.

Lordy was Henrik handsome, brave and talented outside the royal court. Rather like Philip

It was a longstanding grievance of Henri Marie Jean André de Laborde de Monpezat or Prince Henrik that he did not have a title higher than his sons - he expected to to be "King consort" rather than the traditional Prince consort (like Prince Phillip). Obviously this wasn't possible for constitutional reasons as Kings outrank Queens. He never really accepted that the Crown Prince was the official substitute when the Queen was unable to carry out official duties.

I think he was a man that struggled to really find his role as Daisy's +1 after his diplomatic career in France and London. Phillip was much better at understanding his role and place - Phillip knew that he was higher in the personal sphere but not when it came to official duties - for example if the Queen was ill Charles would automatically stand in at official receptions and engagements but Henrik regarded it as an insult that he was not no. 2. I think also that Daisy and Henrik were both quite stubborn an tempestuous characters and when they fell out Henrik would often flounce off to France to cool off.

He had a huge strop in 2017 and stated that he didn't wish to be buried next to Daisy - although it is probable that his dementia had already begun.. I believe he was cremated in the end so will not be buried next to her.

Maireas · 15/01/2024 22:29

Makes you appreciate how sensible Philip was, and what a good support to QEII.

Seems strange that Marie and the kids didn’t attend the event

eggandonion · 15/01/2024 23:28

I don't blame them really. I think they must be more than a bit salty about losing their titles.

What would they have done if they attended? Joachim did a car trip from Palace to Christiansborg but did not attend the council meeting where the abdication happened and did not appear on the balcony. Not sure taking the kids out of school to fly transatlantic to hang around in the background would have been done even if relations were warm.

I'm pretty sure that they live in Washington DC these days as Prince Joachim was appointed military attaché to the Danish Embassy in the US. They only moved there in September and were back in Denmark a couple of weeks ago for Christmas/New Year as Joachim and Marie were pictured at the NYE ball just after the abdication announcement. Perhaps they felt it would be too disruptive to to the kids' schooling to make the trip again having only been home for a few days.

AllTangledUpInTitlesAndTiaras · 16/01/2024 10:05

It seemed like Fred and Joachim were suitably friendly/affectionate on the day for me to think that perhaps things have settled a bit. Mary and Joachim greeted each other as well.

It's not odd that Marie stayed with the children in DC as it was a constitutional event. Benedikte and Joachim participated in their official roles. Fred and Mary's children were there as children of the new King (and Christian as new Crown Prince, of course).

Mary wore elements of the Rugby Parure on the day (brooch on belt, earrings and hair pins) which means that she will be keeping it - makes sense as the tiara has been adjusted to suit her, and of course it has great personal history with her as well.

Daisy wore the ruby horseshoe pin which was a gift from her father on the day legislation was changed so that she would, in time, become Queen.

She wore it for her own proclamation as Monarch.

Other jewellery:

On her first full day as Queen Mary wore the brooch she was given by Daisy on the occasion of Christian's baptism.

The blue outfit is a cashmere set, not a dress, for those who were wondering. She's worn it previously.

Lovely detail on the gloves - a scalloped edging to echo the design on the jacket.

Going back to the day of the abdication/proclamation, Isabella wore the brooch she was given by Daisy on the occasion of her baptism.

With it, a note:

To Isabella from your grandmother.

On the occasion of your baptism, July 1, 2007.

I was given this piece on the day of my baptism, May 14, 1940, by my grandmother, Queen Alexandrine.
