Fancy US wedding

Dh and I have been invited to a fancy wedding in the US - they are getting married in an actual cathedral! Dh has to wear a tux, what should I be wearing? I’m guessing very fancy?

any thoughts very much appreciated. I’m an athletic build and have an open budget. Tia

Bugger spending all that money on a wedding that will one day be a divorce. Spend the money on a flash holiday instead.

Much prefer NY/US weddings - dressier, nobody bats an eyelid if you wear black, white and/or silver, and not a fascinator in sight.

The last one I attended, I wore my Vampire's Wife Falconetti dress in silver, good jewellery, professional hair and make-up, and borrowed a Judith Leiber jewelled clutch bag. Lost count of the latter. Next time, will rent an Olympia le Tan book bag!

Have you thought about an evening trouser suit? That way you have a jacket for the church and a cami underneath for dancing

I would probably take some strappy sandals for the evening part, maybe silver or gold with a complimentary clutch. There will be a cloak room so you can easily leave your afternoon shoes in a bag there.

Not sure if anyone’s mentioned this, but American weddings also have a ‘rehearsal dinner’ the night before, with close family and friends. I went to a family wedding in California and got caught out by needing something more formal (evening dress) and a 2nd outfit for rehearsal dinner too. Cue major shopping trip.

But you should have received a separate invitation to the rehearsal dinner, OP, if you are invited. Coming across the pond as you are, you certainly should be.

Hi! Thanks for the interest, I’ll admit it’s not going perfectly to plan. Dh chatted to the groom who said it’s formal dress for the cathedral and then a fancy gown for evening, so definitely two outfits. I’m planning to wearing a brocade, sleeveless knee length dress I bought a couple of years ago for a uk winter wedding with knee high leather heeled boots and a long wool coat for the cathedral so that’s fine.

The evening is still not sorted. I tried the Ralph Lauren dress I posted but it was very meh and felt very boring. The sizing was also crazy so I ended up in a UK 2 and, and I hadn’t realised this before but it seems it is really common, the smaller a dress size you go the shorter the dress itself gets, so the size 6 was too long but the 2 was a bit too short and looked rubbish with heels. So now I’m looking for something a bit more exciting but probably not a column as I feel a fuller skirt will not look as obviously short. Also post Christmas something a bit more forgiving on the tum seems smart!

I’m glad you’ve established it’s really two dresses you need for the wedding. Just keep shopping and you’ll find the right thing.

I don’t believe we are invited to the rehearsal dinner no, certainly no one has mentioned it to us.

Better take something suitable just in case ... You can always use RD outfit for another dinner.,
