Thanks @Fraaahnces Yep I definitely liked the aldehydes... although I recently got L'Aimant by Coty that that is really strong on the aldehydes and is reminiscent of old lady...

@Peridot1 I like CH but only in small doses... and her more recent content seems less impartial and more about pushing different brands.

I have an empty:

  • Garnier Ultimate Blends repairing hair food papaya & coconut shampoo: not great for my hair but fine for my son's

@Experiment627 - I agree with the small doses comment. And yes she does push certain brands. But they are brands I’ve discovered through her and like a lot of things from so I don’t mind too much. But she is definitely not impartial now - especially with her own brand now available. But she is a business now rather than just a beauty writer/blogger/therapist. With all of the overheads/staff costs etc that goes along with it.

By the way I finally have used that Lisa Eldridge eye shadow enough to have an opinion on and I don’t like it. It’s a real liquid and I find it messy and am useless at applying it. Have gone back to Laura Mercier eye shadow sticks.

I have some empties.

Elemis toner. I liked this under my hyaluronic acid. And it lasted for ages once I realised I should be splashing it on with my hand rather than using cotton wool.

The Ordinary Pycenogol. It's supposed to improve the efficacy of Vit C. No idea if it did.

L'Occitane shea butter foot cream. I loved this and am finally in a decent routine of putting it on after my shower on days I'm wearing socks. I used to put it on at night before bed but kept forgetting.

Lancome eye cream. Meh.

Biossance renewal mask. Loved this. It's an exfoliator and mask in one. I'd consider rp if I ever use up all the other masks I have.

A few empties:

Skin1004 centella ampoule - 30ml. This was quite runny, like an essence. It was lovely, felt really hydrating and soothing.

Pixi Rose essence oil - 30ml. This has three layers and you have to shake it up. It was lighter than the other rose oil from Pixi I’ve used before, much preferred this one.

Kayali Yum Pistachio Gelato EDP - 10ml. Loved this, have already bought a full size. Gourmand but in a light, fresh way.

Bath & Body Works Among the Clouds body lotion - 236ml. Not my favourite scent, too sweet and fruity, but love the consistency of these lotions.

Noughty Get Set Grow shampoo and conditioner - 250ml each. Didn’t like the shampoo, left my roots feeling matted and hard to comb through. The conditioner was good though.

Percy & Reed Volumising No Oil hair oil - this was good in that it helped smooth down flyaways and didn’t weigh my hair down. Didn’t notice any volumising effect.

&Honey Sakura Deep Moist Shampoo. Smells divine, my hair was silky soft and it comes in an enormo 440ml bottle that looks like a mason jar with a pump. I have re-used it for hand soap in the bathroom.
I would repurchase but I have a different “flavour” of this same shampoo to use first. I think it’s nice, but maybe a bit heavy on my fine hair.

Fraaahnces · 01/06/2024 17:07

This is the shampoo

@Experiment627 ohhh I have L’aimant by Coty too.

I think of it as old school heavy on aldehydes. Reminiscent of Chanel N°5. Quite cheap in Savers too, less than 10£ of I remember correctly.

@Fraaahnces as for the 4711 the classic is beautiful and fresh. I think the ones with the funky packaging are the remix ones. They tend to be more on the floral/fruitier side.
You mentioned you like green, sharp fragrances. The one that came to my mind is Cabotine by Gres, the one with the green cap. Less than 10€ last time I checked, but quite nice.

That’s a very pretty bottle 😃

Fraaahnces · 01/06/2024 08:12

I made a mistake! It wasn’t Lavin, but Carven “Le Parfum”.
Meanwhile, according to Fragrantica, the “old” Arpege was a reconstruction of a 1927 fragrance. The new one seems to have ditched the aldehydes top notes of the earlier version. Perhaps because of the cost, or maybe because they were not in fashion when Arpege was reformulated for the third time.

I think it has to do with limiting the amount of certain compounds in perfume. It is heavy regulated by IFRA and so some formulas had to change in order to comply.

Experiment627 · 01/06/2024 20:39

@Peridot1 so disappointing about the Lisa Eldridge shadow

@Thereislightattheendofthetunnel I can send you my almost full bottle if you want?

Is the 4711 the Cologne smell? If so I ADORE the original!!! My granny used to wear it and it is very evocative for me.

How sad am I...
I Lost my empties and was all upset I couldn't post about them haha! Partner looked at me like I had lost my mind! "You're upset you lost a bag of recycling?"
So needless to say, we can imagine the look I got when I cheerily announced I had found it again!!

Imperial Lather Bubble Bath - Cheap and Cheerful, smells nice in the bottle, but I can't smell it in my bath!

Nivea Original Care Lip Balm - Cheap and Cheerful (again!). Does the job. Nothing extra special.

Dr Jart+ Ceramidin Serum - Love this and want to RP. Smells and feels nice on skin, and not too heavy, but manages to still hydrate!

Nuxe Body, Face and Hair Oil - I had two of these! Again, still like the smell. Again, still have more stuff to get through before considering buying!!

Gatineau Hydra Aura Water Cream Loved this stuff as well, light and refreshing and make up sat well on it!!

Garnier Hail Oil, Coconut and Coconut Oil - Love the smell and doesn't seem to leave a greasy film like other hair oils can! My hair also seems to react well to it as is soft and not so frizzy!

Christopher Robin, Cleansing Purifying Scrub - I really like this stuff, I feel like it works really well. I wasn't convinced as the salt is pretty chunky in it and I thought it was a bit gimmicky, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Scentsy Dancing Sugar Plums - Actually really liked this stuff! Strong smelling and lasted ages!! Little went a long way!!

I am really wanting to buy the Glossier Future Dew, but I don't know if it's any good. Has anyone ever used? Or am I being suckered into advertising!!

Happy to adopt it 😙

@Experiment627 yes! That’s the original 4711. Very citrusy and fresh reminiscent of the huge bottles available for children in Spain. Think Nenuco and Denenes.

I also have a bottle of that one 😎.

Fraaahnces · 02/06/2024 05:21

I love the original 4711 too. Even if it does remind me of being scolded by my very Catholic grandmother when I dared to suggest that I didn’t want to go to heaven because she said that dogs had no soul didn’t go to heaven. (I was five or six at the time and my dog had just died.)

The two Remixes I have (Neroli and Orange) are nice to spritz on during hot summer nights. (Who am I kidding… It’s the first day of winter and it’s 23’C here today. I’m menopausal af and can use this anytime.) They don’t last long though. The LOTV version lasts a bit longer and now I am looking at other “flavours”. They’re only $10 on sale at the chemist here atm.

Cabotine des Gres is also lovely. I still can’t get past Herba Fresca from Guerlain.

OOOOH! My eldest daughter just sent me news that Glossier is FIIIIINALLY coming to Mecca on July 16. Going to get to try some Futuredew at last!

wheresmyshoe · 02/06/2024 13:43

41/100

Kayali pistachio gelato perfume - vanilla pistachio sweet scent, not one for me

Kingsley shampoo - suits my hair very well potential rebuy, super lightweight

Bader ultra rich cream - suits my skin when it needs TLC too expensive to buy. I'm one of the few happy to see it in advents

Bamford - body wash, it's a pleasant wash but wouldn't buy as so many options at a lower price point

Fraaahnces · 02/06/2024 14:56

My eldest tells me that she has bought the Kayali Pistachio fragrance. As much as I love pistachio gelato, I don’t think I would enjoy smelling like it. I don’t like Bum Bum cream for this reason. (I find it gets sickly in the way that sweets do on long car journeys.)
Meanwhile, @LilyJessie - men are so silly about important things like evidence of progress. They just think it’s rubbish! 🤦🏼‍♀️
I expect to have some exciting progress with a few makeup products in the next few weeks and at least one skincare item.

wheresmyshoe · 02/06/2024 17:02

I'm in the same place @Fraaahnces I love pistachio gelato to eat but not as a scent to wear. Perhaps it's for those much younger than me.

Fraaahnces · 03/06/2024 00:43

I think it’s fairly true to say that fragrance can date you. Ie 4711 belonged to everyone’s Nanna. For my demographic (50’s) people’s grandmothers wore Miss Dior, Chanel 19, Rive Gauche (if rich) or else they wore 4711 or je Reviens by Worth (which was cheap at the chemist) or even the Yardley floral fragrances.
My mum’s era had the Arpege, Charlie, White Linen, Opium, Poison, etc… (Probably because that was all they could still smell with the chain-smoking of the 70’s and 80’s.) When I was young, gourmand fragrances really took off with the introduction of Angel. (Barf - I used to work as an “Angel Ambassador” when it came to Aus and can’t look it in the face now. I genuinely had people (mainly men) stopping me in the street to ask about it at the time. Fairly sure this is also why I prefer lighter, fresher fragrances now.). Also the Calvin Klein “oceanics” and the ever-mourned Gucci Envy.

Peridot1 · 03/06/2024 12:42

I’m a bit older than you @Fraaahnces - just had the big birthday that starts with a 6 which I’m finding traumatic! But agree about the fragrances and how they date us. My first ever fragrance was 4711 which my grandmother gave me. No idea how old I was though. In my teens I think I wore Charlie for a bit. Stolen from my mum. I turned 21 in 1985 and was given lots of perfume as presents - Anais Anais, Rive Gauche, White Linen, Opium and Paris by YSL. I am wearing Paris quite a bit again now. I really liked an Clinique one called Wrappings in the early 90s too. Also went through the Angel phase in the 90s as was given it by a friend. Then moved on go Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir in the 2000s.

I am not a big perfume fan really though now as I have bad allergies and it can set them off so I only tend to wear perfume if I’m going out.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 03/06/2024 12:53

@Peridot1 I'm a year younger than you and definitely remember wearing Charlie in my teens too. I think my mother used to wear Tweed. Or else we bought it for her as a present and she pretended to wear it.

I remember wearing Anais Anais too in my 20's. I loved it. I bought it in the duty free on my first holiday post graduation. That was the wealthiest I ever was. Student financial mindset and adult salary is a great combination.

Peridot1 · 03/06/2024 13:35

@OchonAgusOchonOh - I remember my mum wearing Tweed too. I’m sure I “borrowed” that at some point too. Not necessarily because I liked it but because that’s all there was!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 03/06/2024 13:50

@Peridot1 - I remember Tweed being hideous but that didn't stop me borrowing it either 😁

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 03/06/2024 15:25

I am very intrigued by this Tweed and I might need to visit Boots in hopes of smelling it.

Regarding dates and fragrances I think that it dates you because they are what was trendy at the time. My mum used to wear Anais Anais, in fact she still has her vintage bottle. My grandma had Lou Lou and she gifted it to me. I just love it.
And then my XMIL used to wear the heavy weights, Rive Gauge, Knowing by Estee Lauder and Opium.

Maybe in a decade or two, the 20somethings of today will think that they are old school by having used Kayali, Baccarat or Ariana Grande.

I think we are now in the era of gourmand overload. I like it but I get bored easily and overwhelmed by the vanillas and marshmallows and sweet stuff in general so… given that, I am rediscovering the masterpieces.
I am in my thirties and I am rocking at the moment Paris, Chanel19, Shalimar and Eternity so for me personally I don’t have anyone that would remind me of those and I use them for myself.

At the end of the day we should wear what makes us happy regardless of age or gender. Having said that I love Habit Rouge by Guerlain and I might spritz it on me from time to time. I borrow it from my husband’s 🤣

Fraaahnces · 03/06/2024 16:08

I loved Paris and Tresor in the 90’s! So florid and romantic. I mean, they both smelled so pink! As for being much younger, I’m early 50’s. (And in utter disbelief). I have taken to stealing my DH’s Rhubarbe Ecarlate (Hermes). So delicious. I will probably buy some for myself if I find it in a gift pack. My eldest has been rocking Calvin Klein Truth which I loved in the 90’s. Don’t tell her or she’ll go off it.

CorneliaStreet · 03/06/2024 18:14

I grew up with Dior Dune, L’Eau d’Issey, Ralph Lauren Romance etc - wore all of those for years. I remember when Angel came out and I hated it, but weirdly as I’ve got older I’ve started liking gourmands more and more (I love the Kayali pistachio that no one else here seems to like 😆). I only wear perfumes like that at home in the evenings though (I’m a two perfumes a day person). They seem more cosy than florals etc. For daytime my favourites are Miller Harris Secret Gardenia, Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil and Gallivant Tel Aviv, plus Guerlain Mon Guerlain in winter.

I’ve got way too much perfume, probably 20 or so full bottles plus lots of minis and samples. I don’t care though, I want more!

The perfume I covet the most is Killian Angel’s Share but it’s stupidly expensive so will never actually buy it.
