Hi, thinking of this - I’m 5 ft 4 and big boobs w small waist - usually a 10 or 12. It’s online only - do you think it would be very voluminous? And what’s the quality like w Nobody’s Child? https://www.marksandspencer.com/cord-v-neck-button-through-midaxi-tea-dress/p/clp22581426#intid=pid_pg1pip48g2r18c2|prodflag_New

Nice dress, but I wouldn't buy from Marks and Spencer because of their support for Israel. Especially at the moment 😢

CormorantStrikesBack · 06/12/2023 19:11

Just seen a Nobody’s child tiktok video which is mainly focused on a jacket but the model is wearing this under the (open) jacket. It looked really nice in the video, better than in the photo. Yes, it’s a bit oversized but in a sort of funky Toast way.

You mean because they were founded by a Jewish family? This is Style and Beauty not the Conflict in the Middle East board.

Did you buy it, OP

The dress isn't by M&S, and isn't sold exclusively by them. It's also in John Lewis, probably other retailers, and of course direct from Nobody's Child

There’s something about being over 55 that makes me like this in a nostalgia for what was in fashion when Princess Di a young thing. But, I know that as an older woman it would be hard to pull off.

Only if you buy in to ageist stereotypes!

If you feel terrific in something, you'll wear it well

I don’t buy into ageist stereotypes but when I try things like that on they don’t look right on me anymore however much I’d like like them to.

A few can be tweaked - different belt etc. - but there are some styles that are hard to wear

Ah, that's a bit different. If you've gone off a style, that's just a change in personal taste - you don't like the look.

Assuming it's not suitable for someone of a particular age, simply because they are that age (which is how I read your post) is ageist

Thank you for clarifying that's not what you meant!

coldandmiserableinbirmingham · 07/12/2023 13:16

I'm sorry but I think it's bloody hideous. The plunging neckline, voluminous sleeves.....its a monstrosity. In what way can anyone think its flattering?

Nothing to do with them being Jewish. Totally fine with that.

It's their close ties with Israeli government I object to.

evtheria · 07/12/2023 17:47

I bought this dress!

I'm 5'3 so it goes right down to just above my ankles, I'd have preferred shorter for a more modern look but it's fine.
I'm size 6 and the 4 fit me perfectly. I have a short torso and flat chest so the waist on this was kind of where I wanted it, I looked at other women wearing the dress on IG and worried it would be right under my chest (not my style). I also worried it would look 'too big' on me, as I've a very petite frame but it hangs just right.

The quality is lovely - the cord is super soft, almost like velvet, and the colour true to image. I feel very swishy in it, and like how it's not stiff or bulky. Edit: I must have long arms as the sleeves are 3/4 on me. They’re quite tightly elasticated, just to warn you.

I couldn't wear something that wasn't flattering in some way. It would make me miserable, so why would I? Actually it would be returned or left in the wardrobe.

Same. Clothes aren’t meant to be a punishment.

As a size six you probably seem quite willowy so it would look very different on you than other petites like me (size 12). This style wouldn’t suit me at all.

evtheria · 08/12/2023 08:12

@Ramalangadingdong At my (short) height I'd love to be called willowy 🤣 thanks. I actually thought the women I saw on IG, who were bigger than me or large chested looked great in the dress, it both made me want to buy it AND worry that I'd look like a little scrawny kid in it! You never know! Though I do think it gives a 'certain look' and clearly people either hate or love it.

Same comment to you. Style and beauty is not the place for your political opinions. There's a section for that. It's so nice though that you are "OK with them being Jewish" 🙁

OTOH I think ethical issues around the supply and retail of clothes and beauty products is really important, and most definitely belongs in this topic

Well yes they are , but the current situation in Gaza is irrelevant to this dress. It's designed by Nobody's Child, made in India and sold by various distributors, one of which happens to be M&S.

It's clearly divisive on taste but to my eyes it's the nicest dress that's been linked to for weeks.

Agree with you - I'd already posted earlier in the thread that this isn't an M&S dress.

But if the other poster wants to boycott all the third-party brands that M&S stock, and there are many now - clothes, beauty, food - then I don't mind them mentioning that. (It wouldn't be remotely logical to boycott only some of them, so I hope they are being thorough).

And I'm with you - really like this dress!

It made me think and I have decided to boycott.

@evtheria have you not considered having the dress taken up a few centimetres?

evtheria · 08/12/2023 16:20

@RADIOOFF Yes, though at a seamstress as I would def ruin the hem. Unfortunately it wouldn't be in time for the outings I wanted to wear it to this month! Probably something I'll get done... hopefully by next autumn...

YouAreMyCentreWhenISpinAway · 08/12/2023 16:53

I bought, but returned this dress. Honestly, I looked like a courtier at King Henry VIII's Hampton Court Palace. The sleeves are very balloony.

TorroFerney · 08/12/2023 17:04

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 01/12/2023 19:03

I bet it wouldn't. It's a lovely dress. You're right about it being like Laura Ashley

If I saw some one wearing it, I'd just think "great dress" - not all that "if you are short(ish), you need to draw the eye upward", blah, blah ,blah.

Agree, why do you have to draw the eye upward? is that to make you look taller - is there something wring with not being tall that one must disguise it?

AT2435 · 12/01/2024 19:47

A question for anyone who owns this dress. Can I ask if a bra is visible when you wear this dress? I love it but I am conscious of the low neckline and insure if you need to wear it without a bra.
