My green gingham Alix are due today, missed out on the wool ones - they left my basket before I was able to check out...

Countmeout · 28/12/2023 11:11

I’m going to harp on about the measurements thing again. Apologies.
Lucky enough to get some money at Christmas and going to spend it on the waxed jacket.
I measured my raincoat.
The xxs/xs is 5 centimetres bigger pit to pit than me current raincoat.
My first instinct was to buy s/m. But that’s another 10cm.
logic says the xxs/xs should fit but no way am I that size. I thought things were smaller. What hope does anyone truly small have?
I don’t want to have to order 2 if I can help it.
Has anyone been in a physical shop and can advise re sizing?

@Firesideknitting and hopefully squeezing in a visit to Betty’s?

Ahh yes of course, I’ll pick up the obligatory fondant fancies ….

Snowyowl78 · 28/12/2023 11:38

Has anyone ever bought from Maxmara and know about general sizing?

MrsCat1 · 28/12/2023 11:43

Just received an email from Uniform Research to tell me that the a-line coat I ordered in the sale is out of stock so they are refunding. ☹️I hope that the others who ordered this have better luck.

PretLea · 28/12/2023 11:49

Ah sorry @MrsCat1 :( Mine is on the way but I did get the smallest size. I think they only stock 1 item per size.

JustforToast · 28/12/2023 12:00

Has anyone tried this Blackhorse lane denim jacket? I feel like I have been considering it for years! I’m in Ireland and Toast exchange rates and shipping costs are ridiculous so each order is a high risk gambit.

HoldingOnForAHeron · 28/12/2023 12:25

@JustforToast , I've not seen it or tried it on but it looks like it would last forever.
Work Jacket | French Work Jacket | Bleu de Travail | Carrier Company might be one to compare it with, and the Toast one looks worth the difference.
Work Jacket | LABOUR AND WAIT. I've ordered from L&W and their quality is excellent
Le Laboureur (Buy Le Laboureur clothing online @Union Clothing - trusted since 1987 | Union Clothing) is IMO the definitive one

Companies like M&S make perfectly OK versions. Save The Sea Chore Jacket in Navy | Finisterre is a good price.

I'm a 'real deal' person and have a LL one, but the Toast one looks nicer to me.

Snowyowl78 · 28/12/2023 12:36

oh bad luck @MrsCat1 maybe there’ll be a return?

Is this the anorak in cumin ? I tried on the S/M in the shop and it was a good fit (I’m a UK 12) plenty of room without it being too big. I quite like this style of anorak a little bit oversize to fit jumpers underneath.

D20 · 28/12/2023 13:37

Finally back in what I think is the right size and I had some Christmas money so I’ve gone for it after procrastinating since he summer sale! Also bought the reusable crackers for next and every following Christmas. https://www.toa.st/collections/sale/products/broderie-anglaise-cotton-dress-conker

MrsCat1 · 28/12/2023 13:45

@Snowyowl78 I've bought from
Maxmara. I would say pretty true to size although my experience is limited to a few (beautiful) items.

Snowyowl78 · 28/12/2023 13:47

@MrsCat1 thabks! I just bought a dress, can’t afford to try lots of sizes!

MrsCat1 · 28/12/2023 13:48

I looked at their sale dresses. There are some gorgeous things.

Countmeout · 28/12/2023 14:03

That is disappointing @MrsCat1 .

Thanks @Noodle421 . Good to have that info. My worry was it was sized
ike the cream coat from last year which I think the green coat looks like. I wish the hooded anorak came in the green. But then it would look like my raincoat 🤦‍♀️

@JustforToast i have seen a few Kate Barton things that have looked interesting but I think someone on here had a bad experience with item/poss returns from memory.
How much is that in Euro for the Blackhorse jacket? It’s a pity Scout doesn’t carry more of the range at least things could be tried on then.

OP posts:
Noodle421 · 28/12/2023 15:23

@Countmeout I sized down to a small in the cream coat last year and I love it. It’s still a bit oversized but doesn’t swamp
me. I think having a bit of height also helps ( I’m 5 ft 7 or 8). I think the green is exactly the same fabric and design as the cream version.

Stravaig · 28/12/2023 16:07

Really fascinating thread about the differences between cheap clothing and fast fashion and clothes production generally.

AFingerofFudge · 28/12/2023 16:47

@faustina I think it was you that mentioned the collection service by Royal Mail? I'm just anticipating (hoping for the sake of my bank balance) that I will be returning quite a few things when my orders arrive. How do they get past the weight of the parcel thing? You might remember that I had an issue a couple of years ago where not everything in my order was refunded and it was only when I produced proof of postage with the weight on it that they refunded?

faustina · 28/12/2023 16:59

@AFingerofFudge - you weigh it yourself! I think it gives you the option of under 250g, 500g etc to select when booking the collection

Luckily one of the bras is a nice fit, by Fantasie which is a brand I haven't tried before, so there was a good outcome in the end

One of my parcels is arriving tomorrow which I am excited about - the wool cotton check trousers which very luckily have an elasticated waist (have eaten far too much cheese in the past week!)

peerie · 28/12/2023 17:23

Did you get the current or the sale wool check trousers @faustina
Could you report back on sizing?
I managed to get the green gingham in a 10 which are arriving tomorrow now

Countmeout · 28/12/2023 17:24

That’s a good point about the weight of the package thing @AFingerofFudge . I suppose if we were returning the whole parcel you just use the weight on the package when it came. Trickier when returning a part order.
I think I might just take my own sellotape to the PO and stick it over the label they print (small village PO - will go at a quiet time) .

OP posts:
faustina · 28/12/2023 17:50

@peerie mine are the sale ones with the dropped crotch - I've ordered xxs and xs - will report back tomorrow!
