Agree, lovely fabrics and shapes from that japanesse brand.

I look at those Clark shoes, and I am not fully sure what to think of them.

Right now I am thinking I need a good parka. I think Elle has Didriksons, I cannot remember if anyone else has something nice they can recommend. I think I prefer it to have good roomy shape so I can wear something chunky underneath if I want to.

botemp · 22/02/2024 16:59

I think Elle has a Mackage coat that I recommended at the time, it's a while ago though. I think the rest of MN has a Dirdrikson though, they're well liked on here. Is it not a bit late into the season to contemplate parkas, not sure what year round availability of parkas are, I'm sure there's some.

I'm the same with the Clarks Collab. I've yet to decide whether they're a good interesting or just a polite 'interesting', hence wanting to see them in the flesh to make up my mind.

OP posts:
Papyrophile · 22/02/2024 17:33

Elle bought a Mackage coat on a resale site a couple of years ago, IIRC.

I have two hooded Didrikson parkas (thin navy and insulated khaki) for dog walking red, and they've been in regular rotation this winter. I'm not in love with them but they work well and have useful pockets.

Redandblue11 · 22/02/2024 17:55

I think I need two different ones … maybe I get one from Vinted for dog walking (my current dog walking warm long coat is way too tatty and old)
and then I need one for work, bearing in mind in my new role I also need to be more on site type offices, I am not myself on a construction site but think outbuildings not in a city center.
I still want to look half decent though.
Maybe a trench type thing with hood will do …
Happy to pay more, but I just googled and this came up.

I think Flo is a Protected Species fan, I quite like this one with a hidden hood, would be good both casual and for work and would travel well (although maybe too dressy for site visits? Kind of depends what you want to project there, I always find looking too office-y can work against you on site, kind of depends who you're there to speak with though, construction sites are definitely different)

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 22/02/2024 18:20

That would be perfect. Thanks Bo.
Yes, without giving too much away is not quite a construction site, but more tech installations type thing for big infrastructure type thing.
I have been there already a couple of times and that one will work well. They also have a trench with hood, Flo maybe has it?
I might order both to compare the fit.

ShangPie · 22/02/2024 18:25

I briefly had a lovely brown Ilse Jacobsen Hornbaek knee length waterproof, but it was too big so I sold it on Vinted. just in case you want another brand to search for!

ToEllewithIt · 22/02/2024 19:31

Jumping back I very quickly to say a quick hello. I need to go and read what I've missed.

Briefly I do have mackage parka and it is amazing. It is fully lined in fur and the warmest thing ever for standing at the side of pitches. It is heavy though. I got it second hand at a great price. They are expensive new. I've borrowed my mum's dridikson and it's much less bulky and super practical. Not particularly interesting though. I love the first one you posted.

Floisme · 23/02/2024 14:41

Sorry I briefly fell off the thread and missed the questions. I tried out the Blocktech coat Red - the men's version (in XS) cos I preferred the style to the women's. I liked it but ended up returning it because it was knee length and I'd really wanted something a bit longer and also because my son had just bought one too and it felt a bit ...weird. Otherwise I'd have kept it.

I've also got a knee length Protected Species trench with a hood (which was partly why the Blocktech went back - I already had that length sorted). And then I landed a midi length trench with a hood in M&S - it's nothing like waterproof but fine in light rain.

Since then Protected Species have also put out a longer trench with a hood. I've eyed it up and imagine it'll be much more effective in heavy rain than the M&S one but I can't really justify it any more.

Which of the Martine Rose for Clarks do you like bo? I'd really like to pep up my shoes but I'm so fussy that I'm struggling to find anything I like that feels a bit new. I quite like the style of the MR high tops but not the snake print. I also like the red Oxfords but they're in fabric which sounds useless, plus they're not really that different to shoes I've got already, just in a good colour. But I don't mind Clarks generally and usually have at least one pair of their brogues on the go.

botemp · 23/02/2024 15:32

Shang, I've had that boomarked for forever but have never gotten round to watching it as I don't want to watch it on a phone. I'm going to commit to watching it tonight.

Flo, I'm intrigued by the whacky ones, the gastric band blowout heels and the leather shibari Oxfords (no one should ever put me in charge of naming anything 🙈). I'd have no use for either, I'm just curious...

And for all my poo pooing of Paris is so lame right now and I'm avoiding it until the Olympics are well over, I've spotted the Louvre is showing a van Eyck blockbuster show, and I have a particular weakness for draped fabric caught on canvas which he's so very good at. So I'm back to looking at a quick Paris getaway and pretending I was never ever mean about the place...

Sorry - just saw my name! My sickly phone won’t show me the Roggykei website but I’ve looked at their Instagram. Not quite my style - can’t see myself negotiating the Tube thus attired - but if I saw anyone wearing these clothes I’d be quietly impressed. The fabrics looks so scrunchy!

Thank you all for the coat recommendations. I ordered a couple of protected species - the long one that Bo suggested and the long trench with hood.
I will compare and keep the shape that speaks to me the most.

I liked the shape of the Blocktech one too and was rummaging in my brain about it but DH helped me decide by asking me the technical spec of the waterproofing… he was not impressed by it being only ‘shower resistant’ and told me - what is the point of that… that helped me made my mind up.
The protected species ones at 18,000 mm sound more what I am after.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 24/02/2024 16:08

That film about knitting and crochet is lovely - thank you so much for the link.

This projected species one is literally like a black bin bag on me … isn’t it… an extortionate price for a bin bag.
this is the S size

Redandblue11 · 24/02/2024 19:06

Trench , bad photo as I am rushing so not showing you with belt or hood … I am thinking black is not the best colour on me.
what colour do you have @Floisme ? Although you are a complete different skin and hair colour to me..

Les Parisiennes des Mamanset: On the Advent of Newness
botemp · 24/02/2024 19:55

The black bin bag aspect isn't as prominent in the pictures Red, but I can imagine with the material in black it may come across like that in RL. I actually thought the coat I had originally linked was navy, but actually it is black. Huh, they do have it in deep olive but I know you're a bit olive-y yourself already so not sure how well that works for you as a colour. I like the trench in red but with work in mind night sky is probably a safer bet. Of the two I like the shape of the odyssey on you more. Have you checked Vinted, maybe someone is selling one of them in another colour that they maybe don't carry anymore?

Thanks Poppy, I've seen that before but I really enjoyed it so I might just watch it again. Also thanks to Shang, I committed and watched it on a proper screen and it is really lovely and heartwarming indeed.

I can't see the knee length trench on the PS website any more Red so maybe they've discontinued it, along with the colour, which was burgundy. If I was buying the longer one now I'd probably go for the dark olive but, as you say, that might not work for you.

Is that first pic the extra lightweight one that's designed to shove in your bag when you go out and then put on over your coat or jacket if it rains (hence the size)? I remember getting an email when they launched it and thinking it sounded like the old pac-a-macs from the 60s but at a zillion times the price.

I've also seen Rains recommended on this board but don't think I've tried any in real life.

Redandblue11 · 25/02/2024 10:56

I will try again the trench coat properly later today.
I used to have a Rains one that I sold because I did not like the feel of the rubbery fabric, just me being extremely fussy I admit, loads of people love them.
Will update you all.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 25/02/2024 11:59

I like the Odyssey from the photo, red.

Have you seen the Carrier Company's rain capes, in proofed cotton?

www.carriercompany.co.uk/collections/womens/Type_Coat

I also bookmarked Stutterheim for myself a while ago, though I have no experience of them:

stutterheim.com/en-gb/women/jackets/raincoats

Redandblue11 · 25/02/2024 12:57

‘Rain coat that doesn’t look too much like one and I can layer’ update - in a new light I have tried the black trench again, I am liking it more, I tried it with a couple of different work trousers.

The odyssey one I really do not like at all.

I also tried a very light weight walking rain jacket I have in olive and actually the colour is not bad on me. I will return the odyssey and I will order the dark olive trench and decide from there. The hood is very good so that is keeping me focused.

Stutterheim costs are lovely but if Red didn't like the coated feel of the Rains than I think she'd like the Stutterheim even less as they have a really noticeable coating.

I ended up getting one from Maium, a local brand that's specifically designed for bike use and that rated fairly high for me. Plus also some good eco credentials although I'm highly sus about those these days. At the time they only had very functional designs, they've got some more interesting ones now, including a nice trench with hidden hood. Not as high waterproof rating as Protected Species but I've always stayed dry ☔

Is anyone planning on seeing the John Singer Sargent exhibition by any chance? They're displaying the original clothes (if they could source them) alongside the paintings. There was a great scathing response in the Guardian
to a critic's review of it, Throw off the cloak of snobbery and treat fashion as a serious art form.

Unsure if it's worth the hassle of travel for me, although I could make it an extra long round trip journey by Eurostar if I squeeze it in alongside the Van Eyck exhibit in the Louvre 🤔

I didn’t have that exhibition on my radar bo, thank you!
If you/anyone else want to go I am always up for it!
It only runs until July I believe?
