Lovers of Parisian style and fashion with a conscious mindset and lots of chatter in between.

Here you go, mm, I'm not sure whether it'll help or make you more paranoid about your travel wardrobe but at least it'll get you in the mood. Vienna Street style, surely there must be one of those Parisians in Paris style Insta accounts too (I'm just useless with searching things on insta):

And I'm just guessing wrt weather normally it would be cooler in March but February has already been unseasonably warm.

We saw an excellent Magic Flute, a good but not the best I've seen Marriage of Figaro (let down by the choice of dealing with the admittedly implausible and difficult to stage mistaken identities scene in the garden in the last act by having singers disappearing in to trapdoors)

And Le Grand Macabre by György Ligeti. Which I'd never heard of let alone, heard. It was interesting. I wore a Cabbages and Roses dress one night and Eponine dresses the other 2. I don't pack light.

There were a small number of people in evening dress, generally dressy, men wearing suits.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 15/02/2024 21:27

Did you watch the Simon Teabag-Montefiore three part series about the history of Vienna? It was on iPlayer recently, a repeat of from I think about seven years ago originally. It was very interesting and inspired me to go to Vienna again.

Redandblue11 · 16/02/2024 08:30

How wonderful and very high brow short break you have ahead of you mm.
I have no suggestions, but that is not a bad thing as it sounds that you have a couple of good pointers there.
Love the sound of your opera evenings castle in those dresses.

As I have been under the weather resting and making the most of my duvet the only fashion news from my side is that I re watched the Devil Wears Prada, for some comfort, no brain, no high emotions and feel good.
I needed to counteract the effect that watching One Day on Netflix (Em and Dex), I had started watching it before me catching whatever it is I have and carried on, but as I was feeling fragile I ended up sobbing non stop with the story.
I am pretty sure I still have the Apple subscription… will fetch The New Look

Redandblue11 · 16/02/2024 08:30

Now I also want to go to Vienna!

botemp · 16/02/2024 08:46

Sorry to hear you're poorly Red, my go to sick in bed movie on Netflix is Clueless (yes, yes, I'm aware it's a modern version of Austen's Emma, don't at me). I've been avoiding One Day as I still remember the movie/book too vividly, not sure I can go through that again.

I've seen the first two episodes of The New Look and I have to say I'm much with the disappointment. Terrible French and German accents (and John Malkovich just not even trying Confused), so bad I've had to put subtitles on. Compared to the Balenciaga series that I saw recently it just really fails to meet the mark, try that instead Red.

ok am much more relaxed now bo I don’t know what I was on about, it looks to me like time to crack out some of the luxy stuff I never wear (because of rolling around in with dog etc) and making sure the rest is ironed no dropped hems etcetc (obviously this is highly reductive but time for me to pipe down anout this particularly first world problem!)

i didn’t watch your video last night because I wasn’t sure whether it would blast out and wake my husband (which I’d inadvertently managed the night before).

I’m with Jennifer Saunders but I don’t think it’s just reels, I do my best but after dark scrolling is a highly risky activity - just occurred to me I need to wear EarPods and then I would be safe!

(“control” obvs - fatfingers)

French & Saunders are fuming about music on social media! 🔇

A sneak peak into Titting About series 3 episode 2: FUMING!Exploring the little things in life that get on their nerves, Dawn and Jennifer explore far-rangin...

💐🍪red, I hope you feel better soon. We watched the latest version of the Pursuit of love not so long ago which I enjoyed very much (partly because Fabrice was PERFECTLY cast 💕). Would definitely recommend as comfort viewing - along with I Capture then castle!

mm47 · 16/02/2024 10:16

castle quite a line up both in terms of operas and dresses 🙌👏. I’ve never seen Eponine IRL but follow on Instagram - absolutely love her Hmong Dresses fabulous material and v flattering silhouettes.

poppy’guess what we will be watching this weekend? Thanks for the tip off.

botemp · 16/02/2024 11:00

It's an odd thing, isn't it mm when you're going somewhere you haven't been before.

There's probably some advantage to not looking too much like a tourist to avoid being an easy mark for pickpockets but beyond that it really shouldn't dictate your choices too much. With my usual luck, the weather usually changes just before I leave and completely upends all previous plans.

But it doesn't stop that looming feeling that you may suddenly feel off at your destination, I always toss in some extra pieces for versatility just in case and then end up wearing them in a completely different way than I ever have before, best appreciated as the perks of travel.

I often find the thing that's different than you anticipate for is how modest or not people dress, or more accurately where the modest/immodest line sits.

OP posts:
mm47 · 16/02/2024 19:14

I agree with you bo that the line between modest/immodest dress is interesting precisely because it varies from country to country. I think part of the fun of going places is trying to remain myself and at the same time respect that I am in someone else’s country and culture- but in order to do that I need a learn a bit in advance of going! Eg the sky wouldn’t fall in if I walked bare shouldered into a church in Italy - but if I can drape a scarf or a sweater around me, i give myself a mark “for trying”. I go from the point of view I will be transgressing left, right and centre on all sorts of things I am blissfully unaware about, so if I can show I mean well I think that’s a good thing.🤦‍♀️🤡. Mind you I feel like that here in UK too!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 16/02/2024 23:31

Getting back to Vienna, I had never heard of Franz Sedaleck. Husband and I always go out separate ways in art galleries and when we met up in the Albertina it was " "did you see those scary paintings?

Interestingly the winter landscapes are clearly influenced by Hunters in the Snow.

The Hmong dresses are amazing and couture. I only have ready to wear; which she seems to have stopped doing.

Redandblue11 · 17/02/2024 10:41

Castle , thanks for the Franz S mention, I had not heard about his work either until you.
That art magazine link also has some good articles, I am now in a rabbit hole reading it.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 17/02/2024 10:55

I see I got the poor man's name wrong in my first mention. It's Sedlacek.

He has an interesting history. Wehrmacht officer in WWII but his paintings could easily fall within the "degenerate art" category. The Albertina hangs his paintings alongside Kokoschka's.

Somehow I missed the memo but Martine Rose has done a Collab for Clarks. I'm going to see if anyone carries them in a shop here, I'm intrigued by them, despite not being a Clarks fan.

@mm47 I was a student in Vienna in the late 90s and I still feel at home when I return.

If you want a cheap night out at the Opera and are able to queue and stand, I recommend the Standing Place. It's an absolute bargain with some of the best views in the house. You can wear diamonds or jeans and no-one will raise an eyebrow.

My absolute favourite art museum is the Akademie, it has a cracking Hieronymus Bosch triptych. It's easy to get around in an hour or so if your time pressed. There is a list of free museums https://www.wien.gv.at/kultur-freizeit/gratis-museum.html

On the wide legged front, I recently purchased these bad boys. They are made from really stiff but comfortable denim. They look great even on a middle aged short legged woman. I need to adjust the waist button because it is exposing too much of the zip.

Lovely trousers Rider, peekaboo zips annoy me too, hate when that happens. New to me brand too, so interesting to peruse their wares.

Which reminds me of newly stumbled upon brands, Crkd, are you familiar with Roggykei already? They've got a dreamy Instagram account too (and YouTube but I've yet to check it out) and your wallet is safe probably as they're all the way over in Japan.

Hello rider thank you for your suggestions. I will give them extra weight for you being a student there, how lovely to get to spend so much time there and learn to find your way around. I really like your trousers and agree when a zip shows like that it’s infuriating, so good luck with sorting that out.

bo I was looking at the Camper website and look what I found! Not a million miles away from one of the pairs from the Martine Rose / Clarks collaboration but weirdly half the price (I thought Camper were supposed to be cooler/more expensive than Clarks?)

Am looking closely at Clarks Campers etc because I’m trying to quell insistent inner voice telling me I really have lost the plot this time as I bought a pair of Clarks Torhill bees in a sort-of raspberry dusty rose colour. I’m trying to convince myself they could be cool @but fear if that’s the case it’s in a parallel universe 🤡

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 21/02/2024 19:14

My local Clarks has the Martine Rose shows. They're made in a very stiff fabric. They look as if they might be uncomfortable.

I do like those trousers and I don't even like trousers.

botemp · 21/02/2024 19:22

mm 😲 how have you given us all reading glasses? I don't really know where Clarks Vs Camper fall in the cool category. I think they've both got a bit of ugly shoe heritage that then became cool when the whole ugly shoe thing started trending. Not sure how much that is trending anymore, it's that time of year where you don't quite know what people are going to jump on come the first rays of proper spring sunshine. Trainers also seem to be a bit in flux in the moment. Meanwhile, I'm looking at heels in the first time since I don't know how long, that I'll never actually buy 🤷

Good grief sorry for that glitch it’s like a visual megaphone!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 21/02/2024 20:25

This is beautiful. I really like that although the clothes are unisex they still look very feminine on the female model and masculine on the male model.
