Opinions on the fit of my new coat

Got a NWT Zara bargain on eBay. I thought a Zara M was about a 10 but it feels more like a 12. I’m used to wearing more fitted styles and I feel like it looks a bit big maybe? Or is oversized is desirable now?

I don’t know if the slight padding on the shoulders isn’t helping things. What do mumsnetters think? I’ve got a thin top on in one pic and a jumper in the rest. Also it’s a bit creased from transit.

It’s frustrating as I love the style and it’s 75% wool Angry

It's hard to tell overall because there's only one pic of it fastened and you've put your hand in the pocket on that pic. However the shoulders look a bit too wide - the shoulder seam should sit on the very edge of your shoulder and it looks like it's over unless you have wide shoulders.
It look ok though, from what I can see. And you can have the shoulders taken in really easily.

Here’s one in from further away and zoomed in which I think shows it better. Plus one done up, hand unpocketed. Excuse state of mirror.

I didn’t realise you could have the shoulders taken in easily. Hmm.

I like the fit on you. Anything smaller would have me thinking coat’s too tight if I passed you in the street!

Dancingonaslice · 23/11/2023 16:33

I think it fits fine. Any smaller and it would look like it’s too small especially with a jumper underneath.

and actually the oversized look is in this year.

IDriveMySupernova · 23/11/2023 16:34

Yeah the shoulder seam does sit slightly over my actual shoulder. I often have problems with shoulders on coats. Before this I bought a lovely Birger et Mikkelson coat off Vinted which fits nicely everywhere apart from the shoulders, which are too tight.

I often unpick the lining and cut shoulder pads out, they just don’t suit me. That might be an option?

EtiennePalmiere · 23/11/2023 16:39

Looks good. I wouldn't change the shoulder pads, they give a nice structure and will get less pointy as you wear it in. Plus if you wear a jumper it will fill the arms in more.

BusySittingDown · 23/11/2023 16:39

I really like it! I think the fit is fine.

Snorkmaidenn · 23/11/2023 16:42

It looks great, any smaller would not hang as well with a winter jumper underneath.

Havingablast · 23/11/2023 16:45

I think the fit is fine but I hope those creases can be pressed out. Try that first (put a cloth on top of the coat to protect the fabric) and steam. If not, send it back.

MarmaladeMaggie · 23/11/2023 16:46

It fits perfectly.

yellowlane · 23/11/2023 16:46

I prefer it opened as it does look a big big when fastened. It's a lovely coat though.

Oh I just assumed they’d come out easily 😬 I don’t have a steamer, only an iron, so would it be a case of putting a cloth on the top and using the steam function on the iron over (but not actually making contact with) it?

Total bollocks. It's a big job.

It looks ok as it is. Leave the shoulders alone.

Put a slightly damp cloth over the creases and iron gently.

Cressaid · 23/11/2023 17:02

I think it looks lovely OP, great to find a bargain like tjay!

GertrudeSteinsbook · 23/11/2023 17:05

I think you look great!

IWasFunBeforeMum · 23/11/2023 17:09

That's not oversized. Oversized is massively too big looking.

IDriveMySupernova · 23/11/2023 17:48

Thanks everyone. I’ve found some modelled photos of it online and I think it’s supposed to be a relaxed fit. It’s more fitted on the third model but looks a bit small for her? I’m not used to such structured shoulders either I think

I think it looks fine! And taking in the shoulders definitely not an 'easy job' so I wouldn't entertain the idea of that.

The fit looks wrong on that first model - the sleeves are way too short for her.

PieonaBarm · 23/11/2023 17:54

I think it fits fine, it does remind me of a Police Officers Tunic!!

swingtowin · 23/11/2023 17:56

I think it's a bit too wide at the bottom - looks like it flares out rather than straight

FayCarew · 23/11/2023 17:57

I think it's a bit wide at the bottom too, but it looks better on you than on the models.

Ruthietuthie · 23/11/2023 18:02

I think it is stuck between two styles, and so doesn't really work for either. The slightly over-sized feel is meant to echo the over-sized coats that are currently the look, but the slight flare out at the bottom makes it look like a more traditional coat. Plus, when the buttons are done, it looks a bit frumpy (sorry).
I would send it back. 75% wool still isn't enough. It's a cost-cutting measure, not something necessary for the fabric to do its job. It will soon bobble, won't keep you warm, and will look like a rag after a short time.
You can do better.

PickAChew · 23/11/2023 18:04

It's a little big but not so much that most people would notice. Plenty of room for a thick sweater, a scarf etc, as others have pointed out.

That silly model will have cold legs.

EllaPaella · 23/11/2023 18:08

I don't think it looks too big at all. If anything in the picture where it's done up it looks a bit snug over the shoulders but maybe as you say that's because they are padded.
