Opinions on the fit of my new coat

Got a NWT Zara bargain on eBay. I thought a Zara M was about a 10 but it feels more like a 12. I’m used to wearing more fitted styles and I feel like it looks a bit big maybe? Or is oversized is desirable now?

I don’t know if the slight padding on the shoulders isn’t helping things. What do mumsnetters think? I’ve got a thin top on in one pic and a jumper in the rest. Also it’s a bit creased from transit.

It’s frustrating as I love the style and it’s 75% wool Angry

It looks like a good fit. I wouldn't consider it oversized at all.

alohol · 24/11/2023 01:37

I don’t have a problem with it but it doesn’t look good fully buttoned. It’s just a generic coat

Ruthietuthie · 24/11/2023 01:46

Another thing to note is that, if it is a bit creased from transit, it is always going to be prone to looking a bit creased, as you wear it, getting in and out of cars, sitting and standing. It's another sign that the fabric just isn't good enough. As you say your current coat is falling apart, this one is certainly perfectly decent, but it won't last long and it won't look polished for long.
Plus, it doesn't seem that you really love it. I would keep looking.

MetaDaughter · 24/11/2023 04:13

@AppleDumplingWithCustard, there’s a reason that Joe Browns coat is £99. (And grossly overpriced at that.)

Body: 83% Polyester, 13% Wool, 2% Viscose, 1% Acrylic, 1% Polyamide. Lining: 100% Polyester
Fabric Type: Woven

Please don't listen to the fashionistas on here who are total snobs about clothes.

Grin

Desperately (despairingly) wondering what it must be like in your head …

The creasing would bother me. A good coat shouldn't crease like that.

I’m frustrated that everyone else seems to know what the OP would have paid for the NWT EBay coat … 🤷🏽‍♀️

She hasn't said beyond her budget is £150. I can't find a new coat with a reasonable wool content at that price but £150 is an awful lot for a second hand Zara coat.

The Joe Brown thing is a real horror. I liked your suggestion but it's not an overcoat.

MetaDaughter · 24/11/2023 04:58

Oh, I’m definitely not imagining a second hand Zara coat would be £150! Not even the limited edition stuff would fetch such prices pre-owned.

TBH I assumed it must have been something like £20. (Am a stranger to EBay, so no idea.) In which case the OP would have every reason to be pleased with her bargain and wouldn’t need to care much about the fabric content or creasing.

But, @IDriveMySupernova, the fact that you said you wouldn’t know where to find a 100% wool coat is making me - unhappy. I wish you could find such a thing, well designed and new, for £150 - but it’s unlikely and may take a lot of searching. Pre-owned or the sales are definitely your best bet. Others on S&B might know of excellent sources. (Looking back, I’m realising that probably 8 out of ten of my most successful coats from the last thirty years were either from vintage markets or Gold Label at TK Maxx …)

Alternatively you might consider getting the sort of coat that can be well made at that price. A raincoat, maybe,

Or a parka, or something quilted from Uniqlo. They would have the advantage of looking less uptight and more contemporary.

Some people on here must have the Hubble telescope to be able to see the amount of detail on this coat that they claim to.

IDriveMySupernova · 24/11/2023 08:27

It was £50. Considering how many coats I’ve looked at in the £150 price range, 75% wool is pretty good. Many I’ve seen are <30% which I wouldn’t bother with. I mean I know where I could find 100% wool coats, but they’re not places I can afford to shop unfortunately.

I’ve already decided to send it back as a) I can see the slight flair people are talking about and I thought it was straight cut when I bought it b) the creases c) the 1970s policeman’s uniform aspect. Appreciate posters’ honesty!

I’ve already got a parka but I’ve always had a smart black wool coat ever since I was about 15. I haven’t been taken with anything I’ve seen this year or last Sad

Still on the hunt so if anyone sees anything suitable please do hit me up with some links!

@supernova that is ghastly.
Might it be worth waiting for the sales? M&S usually had black wool coats that are fairly simple and tidy. They won't set the world on fire but do for a couple of winters for sub £90.

I agree, I like a smart black coat in my wardrobe. At present it's a compromise bought during covid. I tried it on at full price £189, and it was reduced to £50 in the January sales.

It might be a question of fastest finger first as the sales start.

IDriveMySupernova · 24/11/2023 08:53

Trouble is I haven't seen anything I like full price Confused

This style from M&S is ok apart from the press buttons. 100% polyester! Envy https://www.marksandspencer.com/single-breasted-longline-tailored-coat/p/clp60606068

It looks perfect when it's done up. I wouldn't want anything smaller. I hate tight coats.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 24/11/2023 09:02

It's fine - you got a bargain. Wool mixed with other yarns makes it harder wearing.

Headshoulderscheeseontoast · 24/11/2023 09:03

What's with the 'you can do better' comments lol its a bloody coat not an essay

If it were "fine" the OP wouldn't be asking for opinions on here.

It's not a bargain if OP isn't happy wearing it.

My own opinion is the shape and fit are fine but it's badly creased which doesn't suggest it's a good quality material.

A pure wool coat is not less hard wearing than one with artificial fabric. The latter is a price saving exercise not a quality enhancing one.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 24/11/2023 09:25

We'll have to agree to disagree @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle

NigelHarmansNewWife · 24/11/2023 09:28

Oh, and you're wrong about the durability of a wool blend coat versus pure wool.

Just two examples Harris Tweed - not a shred of artificial fabric and one of the hardest wearing materials you'll ever find.

Any Max Mara coat.

DuploTrain · 24/11/2023 09:35

I really like Mango for coats. Not pure wool but the more expensive ones have 75% wool (£199 and under).

NigelHarmansNewWife · 24/11/2023 09:36

You only have to have a look online to see that blending wool with artificial fibres does make it harder wearing. We don't all have the budget for Harris Tweed either.

I normally like Mango coats too, and Zara. But not this year's styles... too shapeless and double-breasted.

I've scoured everywhere I can think of and haven't found anything I like. I think my only hope is Ebay again.
