Opinions on the fit of my new coat

Got a NWT Zara bargain on eBay. I thought a Zara M was about a 10 but it feels more like a 12. I’m used to wearing more fitted styles and I feel like it looks a bit big maybe? Or is oversized is desirable now?

I don’t know if the slight padding on the shoulders isn’t helping things. What do mumsnetters think? I’ve got a thin top on in one pic and a jumper in the rest. Also it’s a bit creased from transit.

It’s frustrating as I love the style and it’s 75% wool Angry

Have you looked on Vinted? These might not be quite what you're looking for, but it's an illustration of what's out there:

Burberry duffle coat - https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/2379123723-burberry-black-wool-coat
Whistles 100% wool - https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/3591450574-whistles-black-zip-front-wool-coat-size-10
All Saints wool mix - https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/3710979421-allsaints-black-wool-axon-coat-size-10

A few people need it use bobble removers before taking photos!

I bought a lovely Day Birger coat from Vinted but it was too small and I couldn’t send it back… I need to list it on there actually. I’m worried I’m going to end up with a collection of second hand coats I can’t return. Fortunately this ebay seller is a business and offers free returns.

You only have to have a look online to see that blending wool with artificial fibres does make it harder wearing. We don't all have the budget for Harris Tweed either.

Really? As opposed to looking at actual coats?

The idea that sticking 25% man made fabric in a coat is done for the consumer's benefit is naive.

Not sure what your comment about budget has to do with anything beyond stating the obvious. It has no bearing on the quality of the material.

It's all irrelevant - the OP clearly wasn't bowled over by the coat so it's not a bargain if she doesn't like it.

Fine. You clearly think your knowledge is superior.

If I were looking for 75% wool I’d snap this up. Such a gorgeous shape. And bargainous.

Oh my goodness, @IDriveMySupernova - surely you missed this? !

IDriveMySupernova · 24/11/2023 12:03

I can’t do stripes, or toggles… and they’re so shapeless. I’m 5’5” so not tall but not majorly short either and they’d drown me Sad

Blimey. I must be beyond help. Those Zara coats are hideous. The MV one looks nice but at that price and 72% polyester!

The coat linked to by MetaDaughter is nice and pure wool.

The Mint Velvet is knock off Max Mara and despite another poster's assertions adding 72% polyester to it won't make it harder wearing.

MetaDaughter · 24/11/2023 14:58

@FayCarew Grin I know it’s an advanced concept, but I’m fairly sure we’re all allowed to like different things nowadays!

(And an anonymous internet forum is quite a good place to share our various likes and dislikes. Obviously, if I were to pass you on the Tube platform I’m unlikely to tell you that your coat is hideous … But then, I’m unlikely to notice other people’s clothes in real life, unless they’re truly outstanding.)

Reepycheepy · 24/11/2023 15:03

I know what you mean about vinted @IDriveMySupernova - but I’ve found it really brilliant for coats and better than eBay.

Could you find time to go to the shops and try on a couple of styles so you know they fit then scout vinted that way? Plus ask for the measurements before you buy ( and keep a note of the measurements of the coats you’ve tried)? Probably sounds like a lot of hassle but might be worth a try?

FayCarew · 24/11/2023 16:17

@MetaDaughter , I did say I thought I must be beyond help. Smile
They look like fashionable coats, but it's not a style that I think looks good.

I notice people's clothes and shoes.

FayCarew · 24/11/2023 16:21

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle , the Mint Velvet one would not attract moths and it would probably take centuries to decompose if you buried it.

atthebottomofthehill · 24/11/2023 17:14

IDriveMySupernova · 24/11/2023 08:27

It was £50. Considering how many coats I’ve looked at in the £150 price range, 75% wool is pretty good. Many I’ve seen are <30% which I wouldn’t bother with. I mean I know where I could find 100% wool coats, but they’re not places I can afford to shop unfortunately.

I’ve already decided to send it back as a) I can see the slight flair people are talking about and I thought it was straight cut when I bought it b) the creases c) the 1970s policeman’s uniform aspect. Appreciate posters’ honesty!

I’ve already got a parka but I’ve always had a smart black wool coat ever since I was about 15. I haven’t been taken with anything I’ve seen this year or last Sad

Still on the hunt so if anyone sees anything suitable please do hit me up with some links!

Edited

If you've had the same style coat since you were 15 AND nowhere stocks the style you have in mind... maybe it's time for a style update? 😬

MetaDaughter · 24/11/2023 17:25

I have been trying so hard not to say exactly that, @atthebottomofthehill

IDriveMySupernova · 24/11/2023 19:10

Not all my black coats have been the same style - quite the opposite. I just meant smart as in, wool, not a parka.

Honestly, I think the oversized/baggy shapeless coats in the shops atm look awful. I don't think they suit anyone.

@Reepycheepy good idea re measurements. I'll measure up my falling-to-bits coat as that fits very well.

Does anyone know what Mango coat sizing is like? Is a small more like an 8 or a 10?

Ruthietuthie · 24/11/2023 21:19

If you want something classic, what about this - in the navy or dark olive, which while it isn't black would certainly work for a funeral or for other smart events.

Wool and cashmere. And really classic.

Of course 72% polyester is crap but I knit and sock yarn very often has up to 25% nylon added as it provides a strong framework for the wool fibres and the socks do last longer.

Lemonsorbeteater · 24/11/2023 23:39

I’m a 12 so choose medium. Small to me is 8 to 10.

XiCi · 24/11/2023 23:47

atthebottomofthehill · 23/11/2023 22:57

I don't think it fits you well. I actually wondered if it was too small not too big. It buttons up strangely over your bust. Just being honest sorry - it looks cheap and ill fitting. Not your fault

I thought the same, that it actually looks too small, almost pulled, across the chest. It definitely doesn't look oversized

The first point of shopping is that you must love what you buy and when you try it on you should feel good. My mother used to say you should feel swishy or a garment should swish with you.

What about this? https://shop.mango.com/gb/women/coats-coats/wool-double-breasted-coat-with-buttons_57056729.html

I don't love the fact that it's double breasted but I maybe I could grow to.

It's a nice, smart coat. It's very similar to the one you rejected.

But see RosesAndHellebores post. I've never bought anything I didn't love on sight.

Which? The one I have on in the photos?

I got to the checkout all ready to purchase this Mango one, then realised it was blue!
