Opinions on the fit of my new coat

Got a NWT Zara bargain on eBay. I thought a Zara M was about a 10 but it feels more like a 12. I’m used to wearing more fitted styles and I feel like it looks a bit big maybe? Or is oversized is desirable now?

I don’t know if the slight padding on the shoulders isn’t helping things. What do mumsnetters think? I’ve got a thin top on in one pic and a jumper in the rest. Also it’s a bit creased from transit.

It’s frustrating as I love the style and it’s 75% wool Angry

I think it is stuck between two styles, and so doesn't really work for either. The slightly over-sized feel is meant to echo the over-sized coats that are currently the look, but the slight flare out at the bottom makes it look like a more traditional coat. Plus, when the buttons are done, it looks a bit frumpy (sorry).
I would send it back. 75% wool still isn't enough. It's a cost-cutting measure, not something necessary for the fabric to do its job. It will soon bobble, won't keep you warm, and will look like a rag after a short time.
You can do better.

I think the flare is just because I'm holding my arm up to take the picture. And absolutely no way I can afford 100% wool unfortunately, not even sure where you'd get 100% wool coats from.

I think it fits fine, it does remind me of a Police Officers Tunic!!

Oh god, it does a bit 😳

Arghh I don't know what to do. My current black coat is falling to bits.

Toast, Bruar

MetaDaughter · 23/11/2023 18:14

What would your maximum budget be, @IDriveMySupernova?

(I didn’t like to mention the 75% as I assumed you paid a very tiny amount and had other coats to actually keep you warm.)

FWIW properly oversized, slouchy coats are still very much in fashion.

Toast, Bruar

Way above budget. Max about £150. I don't like double breasted or anything with a belt, and nothing longer than this one.

I think it looks fine. However, you don't which is why you are asking for second opinions. Therefore you will never be happy with it, so send it back.

Olika · 23/11/2023 18:16

I think it looks a bit too big. I think a jacket that is a bit more fitted would look better on you. But if you got this reasonable price then maybe I could overlook it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/11/2023 18:17

I think it is the right size - any smaller and you would be limited in what you can wear under it.

FayCarew · 23/11/2023 18:18

Bruar in the sale might be doable, Toast not.
I don't like double breasted or anything with a belt, and nothing longer than this one. Me neither. That one is fine.

Zara sizing is a bit all over the place but a Medium is about a 12.

bryceQ · 23/11/2023 18:18

I prefer it open rather than closed but looks nice!

FayCarew · 23/11/2023 18:24

The fabric looks nice. The style is terrible and will date badly.

Aparecium · 23/11/2023 18:26

Look at where the sleeve ends on your hand. It looks fine in the photos. Too big, and the sleeves would interfere with your hand. Also, don't mess with the shoulder pads. The cut of the coat needs them. Without pads the shoulders will sag and not only will the coat really look too big on you, but it will no longer look smart. The sharp shoulders balance beautifully with the flared lower part.

It's a lovely coat. Wear it as it is and enjoy it.

IDriveMySupernova · 23/11/2023 18:34

I've had a look at John Lewis, Zara, Mango, Monsoon, TK Maxx but nothing at all I like. Hobbs' 'Tilda' is alright, not that I can afford it, but it's a bit top and tailcoat. I wish the classic tailored style would come back into fashion.

I really love this on you - think it is great. Please don't listen to the fashionistas on here who are total snobs about clothes. They change their names but never their attitude.

FayCarew · 23/11/2023 19:40

75% wool is ok. It'd be good enough for me anyway.
You like it and it looks good on you. Wear it.

dammit88 · 23/11/2023 19:46

it looks nice, a true bargain!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 23/11/2023 20:27

I think it's fine on you OP and a nice flattering shape, but I'd change the buttons- they look horribly cheap.

rhiannon1967 · 23/11/2023 22:19

I think it looks perfectly fine. Not too big at all. I think a size smaller might look a bit too tight and fitted.

clowniform · 23/11/2023 22:27

For my (frivolous fashiony) tastes it's too fitted, but technically if there's nothing pulling and straining and you like the look, keep and enjoy your bargain!

atthebottomofthehill · 23/11/2023 22:57

I don't think it fits you well. I actually wondered if it was too small not too big. It buttons up strangely over your bust. Just being honest sorry - it looks cheap and ill fitting. Not your fault

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 24/11/2023 00:38

MetaDaughter · 23/11/2023 18:19

That's not a coat. You'd wear that under an oversized coat not instead of a coat.

This Joe Browns coat is nice and only £99.

That coat is13% wool and is longer than the OP said she wanted (the lacing up the back looks very odd, and not in a good way)

The OP's coat is nicer if she can get the creases out, and maybe change the buttons. The fit is fine.

What?

That's bad advice.

It's not great @IDriveMySupernova, it hangs badly, you can do better.

Do you want platitudes or honesty?

Do not buy that coat.
