I'm sure I read somewhere that these tiaras can weigh several kgs (all the gold and huge quantity of genuine gemstones), and basically have to be sewn into the hair. Nothing like your commoner's wedding tiara.

I am definitely not royal, but our tiara is a proper tiara from the 1910s made of platinum and diamonds, I promise! I suppose the weight depends on how solid the design is, but this one isn’t just a thin diadem type (it’s probably 3cm or so high at the front) and I forgot I was wearing it.
You’re right about the fixing in though - it wasn’t sewn in but the number of hairpins had to be seen to be believed! Hence my my DM making me choose the hairdresser With Tiara Experience Grin
I’m sure the actual crowns are really heavy - though presumably no one’s trying to dance in those…

KillingMeDeftly · 26/11/2023 21:31

Is it the Spencer tiara?? Grin

gluenotsoup · 26/11/2023 22:18

Sounds beautiful @Tiarawearer , would you be able to show us a little glimpse? I do love a tiara. I had one for my wedding, not a heirloom 😆but very pretty crystal, a decent size and weight and I agree it was very comfortable, held in with hundreds of pins and it was as firmly in place when I had to take it off as it was in the morning.

I love Max’s pearls and outfit, I’m a sucker for green though.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstotheyard · 26/11/2023 22:29

@Tiarawearer How lovely, and what a wonderful heirloom to pass down the family line. I bet you looked beautiful wearing it.

BritneyBookClubPresident · 26/11/2023 23:48

@Tiarawearer have you worn it much? Do you ever just feel like getting a bit glam and watching Strictly with a tiara on? I think I would!

Now I’m def glad I name changed as my sister is also on MN and she wore the same tiara Grin - she’ll probably pop up now and say that it weighed a ton! Looking at the photo I’d actually say the front is more like 4 or even 5cm high - can’t check as you won’t be surprised to learn it lives in the bank.
And yes it is a lovely thing to have, not that I have ever had the chance to wear it again (so far…). My DM memorably once wore it round Sainsburys under a headscarf on her way from the hairdressers home to change for a party - this was in the 1980s when possibly tiara-type parties happened more and headscarfs round Sainsburys were a Thing.

It’s tempting but if I did that I’d have to get the hairdresser WTE around to watch it with me…

Maireas · 27/11/2023 06:33

That's a beautiful tiara (and veil).
I like the story of your Mum wearing it round Sainsburys!

Ah, that’s gorgeous! 😍I’d be looking for events to wear it to as often as I could- Sainsbury’s included!
Lovely veil too 😊

justasking111 · 27/11/2023 08:35

@Tiarawearer that is a beautiful tiara. I hope it's worn again soon.

How is it supported when in a bank vault it looks so fragile?

Maireas · 27/11/2023 08:36

It'll be in it's case, surely?

Yes but I've read that the royals tiaras somehow still need repairs because of fragility I suppose. You've a lot of gem weight on fragile wires.

SqueakyDinosaur · 27/11/2023 13:57

If you look at QEII's wedding photos you can see very clearly where her tiara snapped in half on the wedding morning and had to have emergency repairs! By the time Pss Beatrice wore it for her wedding, it had been properly repaired.

Really. Filigree disaster then

Thanks all - it isn’t particularly fragile I don’t think, though the wires/mounts are quite fine. I suppose that’s why it doesn’t weigh too much.
Weirdly it doesn’t have a case made for it - it actually lives in a cash box type metal box (fairly large), sitting in a sort of scrunched up tissue ball. Not very glamorous - but then they don’t look nearly as glam off as there is the velvet band thing that is how it’s fixed to your hair. I’m now desperate to get it out and have a play with it but it is quite a hassle extracting it from the bank!

MotherofPearl · 28/11/2023 17:58

I think we can agree that the first photo here pretty much encapsulates why we all love Max. Grin I thought she was wearing a turban but the profile view puts me in mind of a tea cosy I'm afraid. Still, I like the red/camel colour combo.

And then we have adorable little Francois, looking very much like his brother.

My Nana and aunt wore hats like that in the 70s.

RockaLock · 28/11/2023 18:19

Maybe she's wearing her favourite tiara under the hat

justasking111 · 28/11/2023 18:22

Useful for a bad hair day. I've a couple of pull ons for really cold weather. One rabbit fur I think

Maireas · 28/11/2023 18:30

Max can pull it off, though!
Francois 😊❤️

Max is also the only royal who can pull off an Iris van Herpern dress. Here she is with the designer herself and La Macron at the opening of the IVH exhibition.

Something about that photo makes it look as if all three of their heads have been photoshopped on to different bodies!

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/11/2023 21:08

I think Catherine could look amazing in Iris van Herpern dress.

Judiciously chosen, maybe. Having said that, this one is not dissimilar to the day dress she wore to the Crown Prince of Jordan’s wedding…
