I thought I'd do a Xmas edition of the styling threads I've done before for anyone who is interested 🎄👠

@Cismyfatarse if you can handle a very low heel, I'd go for something like this classic style from John Lewis. They're a great timeless style that you could wear again - I see they've also styled them with jeans so a good buy cost per wear.

You could definitely wear a leather jacket or perhaps a blazer if you have one

Hi , I am 64 with a really dodgy hip, that is greatly eased if I wear sports/ compression leggings. I have no idea how to make this work for me, in terms of trainers, tops and jackets, but I’m not going to wear them as underclothes. I’m a 16 on the bottom, 18 on top, apple shaped. I want to be decently covered. I need recommendations for matte leggings, longer tops and wide fit trainers for my size 8 feet. I’ve always been a casual dresser and I have an outdoor life, but stuff I wear with joggers looks wrong with leggings. Can you help?

Zebracat · 22/03/2024 23:53

I did see this t shirt, which I like, but I don’t want to look like Zim appropriating youthful activism.

@Zebracat I've heard good things about the TLC compression leggings. The reviews are v good and they claim to be 100% opaque. Here's their website tlcsport.co.uk

I think the key to making them work as outerwear is how you style up the rest of the outfit. It may not be your style but as an example I'd go for something like this longer line tshirt that has some detail and looks more interesting then a basic plain tee and a lightweight throw on jacket so that the outfit looks pulled together. This will give you shape as well. These suede trainers from Gabor look more elevated than the usual wide fit trainers. I'd also recommend Vionic but their wide fit styles sell like hot cakes. Skechers also have some good options, more on the casual side for every day.

@Zebracat a few more things that could work. The stripy top has a flattering banded hem so this will hide the tummy but give shape to your top half. For a smarter look, this contrast detail top from Live Unlimited would look great with the jersey waterfall cardigan.

I also found some smart neutral trainers from
Vionic via next fhwt.app.link/2eE6NsbI9Hb hope that helps

@frillseeker. Thank you so much. You have helped so much. I’d never heard of TLC, justabout to order from them. I love the Gabor trainers, but I’m worried about the flatform element with my dodgy hip. I’ve never bought from New Look, but I like the double tshirt. Not sure about the waterfall cardigan. Are they a thing?

@Pinko1 here is the link for you - faux leather bomber and yes drop me a PM with your email address and I'll send you details

@frillseeking would this cropped style work on a size 16 apple/hourglass? I'm a 38GG bust too. I'm looking for a decent sexy casual look as an alternative to jeans. I also have plantar fasciitis so trainers is my go to look. I love the look of those river island joggers but they are sold out.

frillseeking · 24/03/2024 10:17

@Zebracat let me know how you get on! New Look is affordable fast fashion but they are worth a look as they have changed designers in the last few years and you can get some nice, reasonable pieces from there. Waterfall cardigans aren't a thing but they're an easy layering piece.

Hi @frillseeking it's lovely to see you back! You helped me with a dress to wear over Christmas and I had loads of compliments.

I have a big ask... I'm looking for a non traditional wedding dress and would be grateful for some help! We're going to get married in the Registry Office, but I refuse to set a date until I have found a dress! I suit wrap style dresses or something that will hide my belly. Preferably midi or maxi, but I am 5ft 4. I suit purple, burgundy, blue (not too pale) and teal. I ordered some dresses from Ghost, but I felt that I looked like a bridesmaid in them and I think that's thrown me really and I could do with a few ideas if possible please.

Thank you

frillseeking · 24/03/2024 18:06

@Pinko1 I've had a look on next and asos but can't see them in stock there either. These ones I've linked below are a similar material and have a nice drape and a really flattering half elasticated waist. They're one of their best sellers which have just come back into stock so I'd recommend giving them a try

linked

For the jacket, that particular style is quite boxy so it might add too much volume to your top half. A biker would be a more flattering style to try

@Loopzy ooh that is quite a tricky one. Going off of the ghost dresses, are you thinking something simple, no prints etc? I know what you mean about those dresses. The satin definitely lends itself to a bridesmaid dress but then crepe options can look a bit workwear.

OP posts:
frillseeking · 25/03/2024 14:35

@Loopzy also meant to ask have you got a budget in mind?

I was originally looking at Ghost dresses, as I liked the Meryl, but couldn't get it in the colour I wanted. Thinking about it now, I don't think it was very me and I'd like to steer clear of satin. I had wanted something simple initially, but I'd prefer a print and something I could possibly wear again. I just need some ideas to get me on the right track, as I don't have a clue what is suitable. My budget is £150. Thank you!

Zebracat · 26/03/2024 11:57

@frillseeking update. I love my new Vionics trainers. I absolutely love my TLC leggings and shorts, although they are super compressing, may take a bit of getting used to. I’m still looking for tops that work. I have a couple of hoodies, and a thin, baggy old sweatshirt that looks great. I have some oversized shirts and vests, but I still need some tops. I can’t wear a waterfall cardigan, my Mum loved them and she died 15 years ago. Thinking about something like this, they do loads with slight variations. What do you think?
Thank you so much for your help. I was so worried that everyone would raise their eyebrows and think my new look was very bizarre, but actually my family are warmly approving and tell me i looks great.

Zebracat · 26/03/2024 12:02

Oh and I’m still looking for the right jacket. I like the one you showed, but it’s quite expensive and has pockets on the chest which aren’t great with ff cups. So I need a shirt style jacket with no pockets, not too expensive. Any ideas?

frillseeking · 26/03/2024 15:08

@Loopzy it is a tricky one. Looking at the high street printed wrap dresses, i think they're going to be too generic and not stand out enough. Something like this dress from
Rixoo* has a bit of detail that elevates the dress and makes it that bit more special.

Kitri also have some gorgeous prints - linked

Would you consider hiring a dress? Something like this would be really lovely and again it's special enough to wear as the bride link

Softpebbles · 26/03/2024 18:30

@frillseeking I am a light spring colouring and wondered if there is a blazer you’d recommend. I wear a lot of jeans and trainers, recently got a nice pair of wide leg jeans. Ample chested but size 8/10 so wondered if cropped would be better?

Thank you 😊

I love the Rixo dress! It looks the perfect shape for me and I love the detail and sleeve length. I'm so tempted!

I would consider hiring a dress, it's something I hadn't thought about to be honest. Are there any other websites you could recommend please?

Thank you!

I personally don't like faux leather - nice jacket though.

I did get a nice bomber jacket in leather - Selected Femme/Female - and it's so nice. It has slightly padded shoulders too.

For me I've been really concentrating on the fit of things recently. I got an Object polka dot shirt which fits me well and another I think it's Object, well it's black but with white embroidered detailing and zips on the cuffs - I had to really size down with it as I have narrow shoulders and back. Both were items I wouldn't have normally chosen apart from maybe the polka dot. It is flattering on though.

Femme2804 · 26/03/2024 22:21

oooh i love this thread thank you. Any idea what works for me as my body is a bit weird.

i’m 5’6 and 80kg so i’m overweight.
I have very big boobs 38G
very short torso and long leg
apple shape body (carry big lower tummy and muffin top)
and my shoe size is 10. Imagine 10 i really dont have any idea where can i find nice shoes with bigger size.

i like elegant and timeless style.

WowStart · 28/03/2024 19:37

Hi Frillseeking, I love the Betty cardigan and have just ordered it. I’ve also purchased some wide leg jeans and would like a new top to wear with them when I go out in the evening. I’m 5ft 7 and a 12/14 hourglass. Everything I’ve tried is too billowy, I like a bit of structure! emerald green, bright blue and navy look good on me. Any suggestions please?

Cismyfatarse · 28/03/2024 20:20

@frillseeking The Ro&Zo dress arrived and it is utterly perfect. I could have spent hours and hours shopping and not found anything as good. Ideal whatever the June Scottish weather chucks at us. Thanks so much. Really, it must be witchcraft with only a vague description to manage something so ideal. If I can ever reciprocate by offering my own specialist knowledge (passing exams in Scotland in English - fairly niche) I will do.

So pleased!!

frillseeking · 28/03/2024 22:54

@Zebracat that's great! Pleased you're happy with your purchases 😀 the top you linked looks great and I noticed it comes in lots of different colours and prints and a short sleeve version - looks like a great every day style. What about these jackets?
