Help! I need a raincoat has anyone got any ideas of where to buy such a thing? I don't want a parka or an anorak or anything with a hood, just an old fashioned mac, a -line and fastened with buttons. I used to have really nice one from Viyella, but it disappeared in a house move. I'm ashamed to say that I usually just use the car instead of a coat, but with a puppy I think I need to bite the bullet and get one. All suggestions very welcome.

Dee1224 · 04/11/2023 23:57

Thanks @faustina!

Not a line, but I tried this recently and it looked lovely https://www.barbour.com/uk/catalog/product/view/id/133211/s/barbour-marie-showerproof-trench-coat/category/57/. I didn’t buy it as I walk everywhere and do like a hood.

I was just thinking @Dee1224 that your husband's wrestling a tarpaulin up a ladder sounds rather like a Toast style photo shoot.....I do hope he was suitably attired Grin

Edited

🤣🤣🤣

oddandelsewhere · 05/11/2023 08:09

Thank you @MsDastardley , that is definitely the nicest trench I've seen but what I'm looking for is something with fewer details, epaulettes etc. Exactly like the Toast green houndstooth woollen coat but in some sort of gaberdine fabric. I fear it doesn't exist.

PretLea · 05/11/2023 08:15

@oddandelsewhere I’d also love a coat like that! I think @faustina previously mentioned Lavenham on here and they do have nice coats, so might be worth a look to see if that’s what you’re after.

dudsville · 05/11/2023 08:19

I just googled "gabardine raincoat" out of interest. Plumo has one that looks toasty but but as nice a shape as The Coat.

dudsville · 05/11/2023 08:20

That should say but NOT as nice.

faustina · 05/11/2023 08:30

I really like some of the Plumo coats this winter (very £££ though)

@oddandelsewhere If your budget is very healthy, then Mackintosh do very plain ones, also Burberry do a proper old school mac (raglan sleeves, very plain) - not the trench with all the bells and whistles. It won't be in their 'fashion' section though. Brick Lane Vintage market has a shop which only sells preloved Burberrys - all authenticated. Not cheap but you might find the perfect thing there.

Final idea - this has great potential:

I borrowed similar from DS2 one rainy day and it was lovely

Oh @dudsville I window licked that coat on the Plumo website for a whole day trying to decide if it was too expensive for something I might not wear much ( I don't know why I think that, we're 800 feet up a Welsh hillside!) Eventually clicked on it and discovered that it's WAXED COTTON even thinking of it makes my skin crawl, I can't deal with either the feel or the smell of it. Also realistically everything I own has to be washable because I like things washed a lot.

Countmeout · 05/11/2023 09:57

Did Toast not used to do a similar style as the Plumo one? Lack of that sort of things this years offering and no parka types like they had in previous years.

oddandelsewhere · 05/11/2023 10:06

@faustina thank you so much for your suggestions. I think I just need something less straight than traditional macs, fitted on the shoulders but with room for voluminous toast dresses lower down. (Also couldn't bring myself to buy Burberry because of the obvious branded tartan lining. I don't want to be an unpaid advert)

clowniform · 05/11/2023 11:15

@Dee1224 sorry for your indoor rain but 😆at 'everyday theatre' recreation! Thank you for all the SM pictures, I now feel like I've been. Hope your son comes back bearing lovely omiyage.

@faustina that Uniqlo x JMA coat looks gorgeous and what a bargain! Boo that it's men's cut so the belt loops will be much too low.

@oddandelsewhere I have a J&M Davidson mac which is v similar to the Toast green: simple, raglan, A-line with a very high back vent if you need even more skirt room. But it was from a sample sale so I don't dare look up the actual RRP but worth a search on resell sites like Vestiaire etc.?
(Incidentally the same Japanese company owns Barbour, Mackintosh and JMD, and they put the more fashiony cuts under JMD.)

Dee1224 · 05/11/2023 11:31

@clowniform - DS1 is back. I asked for some Japanese socks. Here they are…

I LOVE them😸

Dee1224 · 05/11/2023 12:39

I like the look of the Barbour one and the Uniqlo!

faustina · 05/11/2023 12:48

@clowniform - I would never have noticed the belt issue as I never ever tie my coats at the waist - well spotted!

I love the black watch tartan coat - I'm very tempted by the shirt too, which is being offered for sale by a blogger, but that's one size so wouldn't work for me. Also, silly idea to buy a linen shirt in November

@oddandelsewhere if you know exactly what you want, I bet you could easily find a pattern at Merchant and Mills and the right fabric, and then just get someone to make it for you?

The Norfolk Carrier Company do some similar coats but they're cotton, or wool so not quite right either.

@Dee1224 - the socks are wonderful!

mizu · 05/11/2023 15:17

@Dee1224 I lived in Japan for a couple of years half a lifetime ago and still have friends there who send gifts every Christmas and each parcel is full of cute bits and pieces like those socks.

Dee1224 · 05/11/2023 15:49

@faustina and @mizu - I also got a Pikachu plushie!

clowniform · 05/11/2023 16:08

@Dee1224 so FLUFFYYYYY well done DS!

I've had an intensive baking day of picnic-y bits for fireworks watching tonight. Going to change into a Toast cord dress (conker-coloured shirt-dress, posted it before on an old thread) over a merino rollneck with burgundy Chelsea boots under navy duffle coat. Can't help but think how the new chartreuse cord tunic would be even nicer in this outfit 🤦🏻‍♀️

faustina · 05/11/2023 20:28

I just saw JennySue Garcia was wearing the pale coloured corduroy trousers on her live (not sure why I didn't notice when I watched the actual live) - anyway they looked beautiful. Has anyone my height (5'4) or thereabouts tried them on? They looked so nice on her but with something like that length is everything and I know she's taller than me

Countmeout · 06/11/2023 08:29

She didn’t have then on the live @faustina , just the Instagram pictures. She is very tall.

Just went back for another look. Are they the ones with the white tie at the waist? If so they’re not as wide as I thought . Someone on here did buy a pair recently, I can’t remember if they reviewed them.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 06/11/2023 08:38

@faustina I’ve got those trousers on order, the charcoal and the sage, hopefully arriving today. I’m also 5’ 4” , I shall report back.
