Their web team must be having kittens…

dudsville · 28/09/2023 07:41

Hi all, have been enjoying reading the thread! I just came on to say that I once had the perfect loose fitting, merino cotton mix cowl neck dark grey jumper. It lasted about 15 years. After I finally got rid of it I missed it as it was so useful. This one is a lot bigger and different in a few ways, but I'm hoping it might be a suitable replacement. (And i also want those fair isle socks!)

Just catching up on the thread and chuckling away at @clowniform’s cluedo piece comment 😂 It’s so right! I used to own something like that shoulder warmer thingy and it was possibly from my jigsaw phase. It didn’t get much wear for the same reasons others have said. It was actually quite annoying to wear IIRC.
Glad it’s not just me that the website looks strange to, there were all sorts missing last night. Wonder if it’s a glitch? Given the wish lists’ constant issues with things coming and going around sale time maybe it’s a re organisation…

dudsville · 28/09/2023 07:49

Also, this isn't in reference to the new drop but I'm also drawn to this collection of stuff. Anyone have or tried the vest?

Yikes! Site is the same as it was at midnight i.e. mostly empty! Someone broke the category linkages then went to bed 😬 The actual item pages are still there, I think - I can still access apparently vanished garments via my Saved list.

Is that the vest with the slits up the side? I tried it. It was quite a thick knit and didn’t drape/was a bit stiff. (To me) it felt more of an outer wear piece than a layering piece. I might’ve kept it if we didn’t get so much rain here - it would be a rare day when it was cold enough to wear it and it wasn’t raining! That’s just my lifestyle though. Seemed well made, substantial and hard wearing.

Alpacasoft · 28/09/2023 06:47

Totally agree !
I knitted this in 2010 , ditto the flecky Donegal was seen on Rav 6ish years ago
I do still wear it and I also have a lovely fairisle one but they are shoulder warmers and come down half way on the upper arm, so practical.
Perhaps WFH and the CoL crisis means they will make a come back although not at that price 🤔

Ps That's not me!

Ooh that looks like a shoulder cowl inspired by the Daybreak shawl, lovely!

I find them quite practical for the barely heated home / lots of time outdoors lifestyle. The neck and shoulder version of wristwarmers, I suppose.

Stravaig · 28/09/2023 08:25

@dudsville Bit tangential, but Brora has a lovely selection of knitted vests and waistcoats this year, with versions in wool, or mohair, or alpaca, as well as cashmere; some plain or colourblock, some Fair Isle. I have a couple on daydream rotation!

dudsville · 28/09/2023 09:01

Thanks@agnesmartin , that's enough of a description to cool my jets on that item. I'll have a look at Brora @Stravaig but their starting prices are so high!

agnesmartin · 28/09/2023 09:09

😬 Hope I'm describing it correctly. Would be great to chuck on if I were just popping out ... unfortunately there is nothing nearer enough to where I live to pop too ...

Stravaig · 28/09/2023 09:12

@dudsville It's strictly their wool vests/waistcoats I have on wishlist! Their sales don't tend to be until very end of season, but generous if you can wait, and size still in stock. Stingy with the discounts before then, though sometimes 20% off certain items for Hallowe'en or Advent/Twelve Days. John Lewis also stock a selection.

Stravaig · 28/09/2023 09:16

They've noticed something's amiss!

I find it incredibly useful @Stravaig
Tucking inside a winter coat if the wind is icy or just pottering around in if I've got a cold or virus, it keeps my chest warm*

  • Disclaimer I come from a culture where wrapping up is mandatory and I'm agog at people who walk around half dressed in the UK!

I think a lot of it is lifestyle. In the UK, even in winter, most people are moving relatively short distances from centrally-heated homes to centrally-heated work or social spaces in a centrally-heated vehicle. So a lot of supposed winter clothing is fashion led rather than substantive protection.*

It's mostly the remote living, primitive homes, work outdoors, travel by foot/bike/public transport folks who have to think about the functional insulative, waterproof, breathable properties of their clothing.

Whereas in genuinely cold, outdoorsy, wilderness cultures, people seem far more thoughtful about dressing to be both active and potentially stranded outdoors.

*Cardigans without fastenings are my absolute bugbear. Wtff?! Along with any cosy woollen garment actually made of cotton 🤯.
But then I don't do much gentle gliding between heated spaces 🤣.

Stravaig · 28/09/2023 11:29

They're back, and with some new ghosts in the Saved list!

No1Mousie · 28/09/2023 11:40

I’ve got saved items at sale prices 😀 am very tempted to see if I can put them in my basket …

agnesmartin · 28/09/2023 11:47

Oh, I didn't see this yesterday. I don't generally do cupro/viscose but for this I might. But I'm not supposed to be spending ...

I had several of these neck/shoulder things when I was little. Usually knitted from ripped out yarn from things we’d grown out of. Both my mum and Gran always seemed to have hanks of ripped out yarn hanging from their pulleys. Usually with a tin of Libby’s peaches suspended in them to straighten them out. They both had a thing about ‘cold air on your chest’. Mind you, north east Scotland in the early 60s WAS very cold. I hated having to hold the hanks out on my wrists while they made balls.

Stravaig · 28/09/2023 11:52

@agnesmartin That is a lovely shape and stunning print! With you on the cupro/viscose though.

Stravaig · 28/09/2023 12:26

@ilovecherries That sounds gey familiar 😍🧶🥶!

lordloveadog · 28/09/2023 12:42

@Stravaig totally agree about British dressing habits! Though the houses are also remarkably poorly insulated

MiracleToast · 28/09/2023 13:14

Just checking in as have been staying away whilst I wait for the Christmas sale 🥲

Happy to make a cup of tea and have a little look at the new drop.

Wishing everyone a cosy and lovely week. 🫶🏽

Nanasueathome · 28/09/2023 13:28

Ooooooohhhhhh
just checking out the new stuff
my younger son is in Peru at the moment, I’m hoping for something alpaca from him

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 28/09/2023 13:28

My wish list has mysteriously added another 7 things to itself - christmas garlands , a seersucker dress and 4 more pairs of shoes that I don’t remember saving.
