Ok, I've got an explanation of this tailor's method. To make sure they're in the right order I'll do 4 posts, apologies for the bandwidth steal!

Pic one. This is a dress in going to use as it had a high neck.

dudsville · 10/10/2023 17:11

He said the back centre of the neck is zero, we had a language barrier but i think it made sense. So this is zero on the neckline of this dress.

dudsville · 10/10/2023 17:13

He then folded the dress so the neckline had zero at one end and the centre of the front at the other

dudsville · 10/10/2023 17:14

From that point he used tailor pencil to show what kind of curve i could have, maintaining zero. Like this, but I've used paper so you can see it better.

🤣🤣🤣@ilovecherries !

Thanks for the dressmaking info @dudsville . I wish I could sew.

I have signed up to Toast’s darning class today, despite not having any equipment, as I forgot about it. I have my nana’s old darning mushroom but nothing else 🤣. I only have that for sentimental reasons - have no idea how to use it!

clowniform · 10/10/2023 19:57

@Brackenfield Gorgeous autumnal outfit -- silhouette, colours, yum! Where is our proper seasonal weather FFS I was still wearing (closed-toed, but still) sandals today!

@dudsville what a brilliant explanation, you have a gem of a man there. Totally had a lightbulb moment of why I sometimes end up with stuff hanging a bit oddly at the neckpoint after altering just the front neckline (though I usually am raising it), now I see I should always overlay the front and back to ensure a smooth curve across the entire length!

@Dee1224 How was the mending class? I did a visible mending workshop with Flora Collingwood-Norris during covid lockdowns and it was fun but I haven't had much chance to put it into practice and am not pretentious creative enough to put fake darning decoration onto perfectly good fabric.

Brackenfield · 10/10/2023 20:29

@clowniform thank you! Hoping for some slightly cooler temps so I can properly crack out the knitwear.

Dee1224 · 11/10/2023 00:04

@clowniform - 🤣re: fake darning - the instructor didn’t cover a hole or a mark in her demo, just did a pretty woven square on some already perfect material. I would have preferred to watch her covering a hole, given that is what I was attempting to do.

The darning class itself was quite interesting, although Emily wasn’t terribly good at explaining what she was doing. Her decorative darning was lovely, but I suspect she thought everyone would have at least some sewing experience. At one point she blithely invited us to do some whipstitching along the edges of any fabric we were darning if we wanted. (I would have loved to, if I had had any idea of what she was talking about!)

I managed to cover a hole in a ratty tea towel and, whilst my darning wouldn’t win any prizes, the hole got covered. I was going to post a picture, but then I would have had to have a name change moving forward due to the embarrassment, given how many good sewers are on this thread🤣

Snowyowl78 · 11/10/2023 10:40

Has anyone seen Judy Murray in that colourful tank? Toast posted it on instagram

im trying the Flower Mountain trainers from elsewhere in a size 3, not sure if they’ll be ok, I’ve never worn a 3!

Countmeout · 11/10/2023 11:19

No I’m off to hunt for it @Snowyowl78 . It’s looked lovely on a number of people but ££££.

@ilovecherries 🤣 the trees. I was a wilting tree by the end of it.

@faustina yes the Scarlet knitwear one. Will report back when I get home.

@dudsville i only got them on Saturday. They were a handmade mismatched pair , inevitably lost the one I liked best. At least I can unmatched the one left with another but not sure I have anything as chunky.

@Brackenfield love that outfit.

dudsville · 11/10/2023 12:07

@Dee1224 , I didn't know there was a mending class, although the fake darning would have been irritating free classes are a real bonus. I must remember to check their offers more often.

Of course it was the one you liked best @Countmeout, I'm sure there's some law about that.

I'm not in anything interesting today - space check trousers and an oversized washed black easy tee for kicking about at home. What's everyone else in? I forgot to say that I popped into a Toast shop when I collected my dress from the tailor. I was certain I was vulnerable to making a big purchase, but the shop didn't have boots I'm interested in, the The Coat didn't do it for me, and nothing else jumped out at me. They had the teapot and I like it and am going to as for it for christmas. Likewise the chup fair isle wool socks.

Edited

We were going to go to thePicasso museum today but my sloth overcame me again. I have done a long walk but I’m now in the garden watching the sea again.

Countmeout · 11/10/2023 15:16

It’s lovely and cool inside @ilovecherries . The queue wasn’t too bad either despite a delay because someone had apparently vommed inside a room. 🤢 Lovely little streets around it.

I'm in a swimsuit again. Pulling in a M and S linen Bardot style dress from last year (this years were a mix) to move about with some degree of respectability when I have to. I wish I’d brought more footwear options.

applecatchers36 · 11/10/2023 15:59

Jealous of those in sunny Spain visiting art galleries and in swimsuits and sundresses. It's a pretty dreary October day in the UK. Am in navy balloon trousers with parchment boy t shirt and garment dyed denim jacket. It's comfy but can get away with it at work 😅

OftenOrange · 11/10/2023 16:49

Thanks to those who advised on sizing for the Palm Print dress, it’s a perfect fit and I love it .
Planning to wear it tomorrow evening.

Right now wearing a very old sale buy jumper with Ashley jeans and old Solovair boots.
It’s been in storage as it felt at odds with the oversized look.
Feeling it for the neater fit , a nice change .

I'm also envious of your holidays @ilovecherries and@Countmeout! I'm off on a family trip in a few weeks but nothing nearly as fabulous.

Glad you got your palm print @OftenOrange, it's a great dress!

clowniform · 11/10/2023 21:57

@Stravaig Don't know how I missed it yesterday but thank you very much for the shoe fit advice. Having slept on it I think @dudsville was on the money and these are just not the right 'cut' for me, booo.

@Dee1224 LOL can't believe the demo really was decorative embroidery rather than actual mending! Still wish I'd been organised enough to attend, or that they'll put it up online at some point.

@OftenOrange very cute jumper. Definitely share your mood for a neater silhouette. I dug out an old Toast dress with angled darts and pleats that hadn't seen much use these last few years. Looking forward to wearing it again now it's finally cooling down.

I am enjoying all of this talk about mending, altering, lovely holidays and thinking about winter clothes.

I too am away, in sunny Lisbon where it is 26-29 degrees during the day and still 23 degrees in the evening. Lots of Toast clothes are being worn of course but I have also managed to purchase some pure wool trousers in preparation for autumn that are actually made by a Portuguese company but the shop was a little Toastesque. It is a brand called Burrell Factory and the lovely cropped trousers are these ones - https://burelfactory.com/cdn/shop/products/bermudasmulticolor.jpg?v=1693500946

@ToastCosILoveIt ooh looks like Burel have some nice stuff... especially homeware.. I see that they have a shop in Porto , we will be there in the van next week.. ( currently in northern Portugal)

OftenOrange · 12/10/2023 10:49

@Dee1224 Sorry that the class wasn’t what you were expecting , maybe some of the ideas will marinate and come in useful later ?
@dudsville Envious of your access to a good tailor , a different neckline is so transformative and so many Toast garments are high necked.
I’ve a very lovely Toast needlecord button through long thingie in deepest navy which kills me stone dead buttoned , decided to use it as a jacket over a white shirt but the ties look odd , so I’m thinking of getting it altered once I find a good tailor ….(or going for a chopmyself}

Dee1224 · 12/10/2023 13:14

Hi, I am going to have a go at darning some other things over the weekend- I don’t think I am ready to try mending anything of value, though!
@OftenOrange and @clowniform to be fair, I found the class quite interesting and she did say it was the same technique for covering holes. However, I think for absolute beginners, it would have been nice to have a hole covered. But it was still interesting.

It was free for Kindred members and £10 if not. It was a blink and you miss it event re: advertising on the toast events site.

Is anyone going to the Notting Hill circle/repair things this week? I would love to know if it’s worth attempting the trip.

Laska, definitely worth a look if you're in Porto. I liked a couple of the dresses too but didn't dare try them on as trying to rein in the spending and the clothes buying.

Anyone here knowledgeable about kerchief/square/bandana shaped scarves that are made of the thin cotton/linen, the sort of western bandana would be? I don't know anyone kicking about in a western bandana but I'm struggling to know how to reference what I'm asking about! I am waiting for a margaret howell one to arrive, I'm very excited. I also quite like the toast floral handwoven (wool) one but it's too big - I really want it to fit netly inside the collars of things. COS have some silk ones that I like the look of. Does anyone know if they'd be any good?

dudsville · 12/10/2023 17:39

I think the cos ones are too big too actually, ignore me.
