Are we going to buy or have we peaked?

Has anyone had a By Terry advent calendar before? I don’t think it’s worth it at the current price but I’m considering buying it if it gets reduced (I think it will). I like that it’s makeup-centric although it’s disappointing that there’s three red lip products.

By Terry Advent Calendar 2023 - Contents, Price

By Terry have the Opulent Star advent calendar and it is a 24 day countdown with make-up, skincare and tools.

I havent had it but By Terry does always seem to get reduced.
Still dithering over my main calendar. Really wish they'd reveal the makeup colours in Selfridges.
Edging towards Liberty now it has 4 perfumes. Really wish there was a palette in it.
Still tempted by Anthropologie too.

I'm definitely leaning towards Liberty after a few years where I defected to CB ( this is my main birthday official calendar - last year I went rather mad on the sale ones too)
Cosmetopia put me off with the hair slides & bracelet, but the fragrances, Byredo lipstick, Luna & Votary are pulling me in. Day 25 is appalling, but I just got a full size still sealed Ormonde Jayne from a Latest in Beauty box, so I could ask my daughter to slip that in.
Also interested in Selfridges, but waiting to see the lipstick shades.

Ahhh @Housewife2010 and I think @MidnightMeltdown you are my people.

Literally at first I was wtf at hair slides and a bracelet from Liberty, but yyy the fragrances, and also the lippy, the SR and the Votary.

I have a fragrance from the same brand as the Berlin one in Liberty from last year's calendar, and it is gorgeous but more to the point, it really lasts all day.

But yy wish there was a palette. Maybe it's a case of Liberty now and then JLP if if if it is reduced - to get the CT palette and SR Good Genes.

Housewife2010 · 19/09/2023 14:30

The palette put me off JL as I already have it - it was in last year's CB, but it is gorgeous & I'd definitely recommend it.
Cosmetopias rant re Liberty initially put me off (I do like her - think she's a great antidote to the OTT enthusiastic AC YouTubers), but I saw the unboxing on Random Lifestyle blog and it does look nice. The hairslides are in a box with a beauty product so not a DOD. Although goodness knows what they were thinking re Christmas Day!

I got last year’s CB and the palette was different? This one is Walk if NoShame?

Housewife2010 · 19/09/2023 15:24

@clary Yes, you're right. I'm getting confused with all the ACs. I don't fancy Walk of no shame - too pink for me. Another calendar I like the look of has the Bigger Brighter Eyes on mme which I got last year.

clary · 19/09/2023 15:52

Haha #palettegoals

Yes I watched that too and thought that it looked better in real life than it did on the website. The lipstick shade looked good and I'd like to try Poets of Berlin.

That AA rollerball though, the blush, and the dr sebagh 🤦‍♀️

Housewife2010 · 19/09/2023 16:43

I have a Rose Inc blusher & it's very good, but this looks a similar shade. I'd have loved to try the bronzer. That Dr Sebagh hyaluronic seems to be in it most years. I'm sure I got it 3 years running in Liberty ACs. Love AA, but fed up of rollerballs.

AnnieSnap · 19/09/2023 18:52

@Housewife2010 that’s good advice re buying from TikTok. I’ll wait until advice is given on here.

AprilLady · 19/09/2023 21:07

Spreadsheet finally completed. Interesting how pricing has changed this year, with movements both up and down, perhaps reflecting the amount some had to discount last year. It also shows that they are all decent value for the price, if you’re likely to use a lot of what is included.

Based on this analysis, top contenders for me are Selfridges, Vogue and Sephora. Sephora is easily the best value of the £150+ calendars.

Beauty Advent Calendars 2023 Part B - have we chosen...or not?
Ashleigh42 · 19/09/2023 22:17

I used to get loads of beauty advent calendars but found I was spoilt for choice and chopping and changing the products I was using from them. I have a really good skincare routine now so will probably opt for a calendar that isn't skincare based. Was thinking either MAC or Penhaligons, although the Penhaligons one is very pricey! Has anyone had these calendars before? And were they value for money? Thank you.

AprilLady · 19/09/2023 22:43

@Ashleigh42 I can definitely see the appeal of the single brand fragrance calendars, but in my view most are not great value for money. There is a reason they don’t quote a calendar “value” like the big name multi- brand ones do; namely that it would make it obvious that they are rather expensive for what they are.

That said, if you’re happy to pay the costs, I think some of them are really lovely. For me personally it would be between Diptyque (which I really rate as a brand for both perfume and candles) and Jo Loves. I really like that Jo Loves includes a voucher to choose your own full size fragrance - so you can test all the ones included in the calendar and get a full size version of the one you like most.

AprilLady · 20/09/2023 08:02

Sephora now on pre-order. Remember to select Sephora Favourites as one of your two chosen Brands for Life to get 10% off so that the calendar costs £170.

ClarkWGreaseball · 20/09/2023 08:56

@AprilLady that's a great spreadsheet!!!

Pinenu · 20/09/2023 09:17

I’m getting FOMO on Liberty 😩 I knew this would happen.

I’ve never had one before and joined the BD just to collect for it but instantly had zero interest when it was revealed.

Must stick with first impression. Do not cave.

I’ll be keen on Selfridges, Sephora or Space NK if reduced. If not, I have enough to be getting on with… or do I?… stop!

ClarkWGreaseball · 20/09/2023 09:30

@Pinenu don't be silly. Of course you do NOT have enough to be getting on with - treat yo'self!

Housewife2010 · 20/09/2023 09:38

I wasn't impressed with Liberty originally. I've watched the unboxing & spent far too much time comparing the different ACs & I think that one may be my favourite - despite the terrible Christmas Day drawer. Why did the LIB team think that was a good choice?
Waiting for a Selfridges unboxing so I can find out makeup shades. Originally preferred Selfridges, but prefer Liberty perfumes and both have a Byredo lipstick.

IheartNiles · 20/09/2023 09:44

Have selfridges put in two red lipsticks? Why? Who even wears that? Oh it’s Christmas, let’s ring our eyes with black kohl and smother our faces with bright red lipstick.

Growlybear83 · 20/09/2023 09:49

I had the Jo Loves calendar last year and it was lovely. I also liked being able to choose my own full sized fragrance, which arrived really quickly when I ordered it, complete with free samples. Many of the items are the same this year, which is why I'm opting for Jo Malone instead )which I had two years ago). I also wasn't keen on the xmas balls in this years calendar.

Pinenu · 20/09/2023 10:23

😂 @ClarkWGreaseball your response is the exact reason why I posted. I just needed a little nudge.

Housewife2010 · 20/09/2023 10:46

Have they revealed the shades yet?

Housewife2010 · 20/09/2023 10:47

For Selfridges lipsticks?

QueefofSheena · 20/09/2023 13:07

My Liberty AC arrived this morning. I've resisted sneaking a peek in the drawers so far

BakeOffRewatch · 20/09/2023 13:09

Thanks for validating my Vogue preference @AprilLady via the form of spreadsheets 😜
